Yesterday the Tacoma News Tribune had a front page article about the whole horse situation-so today there is a letter to the editor that said it is all because
"Few alternatives exist for cash-strapped ownersCARRIE CORTER; Tacoma Published: October 7th, 2008 12:30 AM Hay prices aren’t the only things that leave horses hungry. The ban on using horses for meat leaves these animals with no outs. Instead of putting horses to good use, we are forbidden from ending their lives even if there is no way to care for them. "

OMG I want to reply, but am on my way to work-can someone post a link to a video of what really happens that I can include in my response-will write when I get home this evening-but gotta run

Well that just really pi$$es me off! So this person that wrote the editor thinks that the only alternative to high hay prices is slaughter!! No Im sorry I can think of a few alternatives, how about responsible breeding, knowledge of what it takes to own/care for a horse BEFORE acutally owning one, and euthanizing if there is absolutely no other choice, how about having a few extra dollars in that bank account for emergencies that do/will happen with horses, and lastly how about having some morals and doing the right thing with that horse and caring what happens to it? Im not wealthy by any means, but my husband and I are in a mutual agreement that our horses will NEVER be sent to auction or slaughter. I will have a vet come out and euthanize them before I send them off to live w/idiots like this that think slaugter is an ok option.....Sorry too mad to find a link or I would have responded to this person.

I think we should all send letters to the editor in response. The initial article had interviews with people that are cutting back on the amount of horses they own due to increased costs, or barn owners that have had to raise rates for renters etc I am sure the whole article is online too-will look and post when I find it. Along with the email address to send responses to.
