I took my husband to the emergency room with kidney stone like symptoms Monday morning. MRI revealed a malignant huge kidney mass instead. He went into surgery Thursday evening, and they found his gallbladder was scarred and nasty, and that his adrenal gland also had a mass on it. It all went, but the prognosis appears good, and he can get by fine with one kidney. He is in pain, and not yet out of danger, due to threat of blood clots and pneumonia. Because we rescue we have 10 dogs on site, and right now we have 3 horses, which I am now caring for on my own. Winter arrived today in force, and my procrastinating husband left me in an unprepared mess, nothing has been winterized. My thesis defense is in 3 weeks, and our museum is undergoing re-accreditation. We could really use some positive energy if anyone has some to spare. I am ready to collapse.

when you get to the end of your rope-tie a knot and hang on. keep breathing and one step at a time. whew- Do you have local people that can jump in and help with different chores? -ok so obviously they can't write your thesis defence-but physical chores and help with cooking or whatever-designate. DEFINATELY some positive energy coming from our neck of the woods. Hang in there. Lisa

I'm glad things look promising for your husband.
Perhaps a scout troop, 4-H group, church, or the local Rotary club, etc., could help w/winterizing and chores. Also, see if another rescue group can take on some of the dogs.
Best wishes and good luck w/you thesis defense.

Jingling for your hubby and you! Please take care of yourself - it's hard to do when you're trying to care for everyone else. Do you have any friends or family nearby to help out? How is he doing?

I hope things are staying sane for you, and hubby is improving from surgery. And just tell those professorial-types that you are the best and they should know that I heard a great story at a lecture by Jeff Corwin last month. His wife was going in to defend her thesis, and she was 8 3/4 months pregnant. He said he told her if it wasn't going well to just quietly pour a glass of water on the floor and tell them her water just broke Take care of your self... I hope life gets better soon! Peg

Hi all, thanks for the kind thoughts. Brian is home, and doing well. He is sore, but actually feeling better than before the surgery overall. The doctor isn't even recommending chemo, because the cancer was local only to the kidney. He has a hell of a scar, though, and is already telling people he got it in a knife fight, the ass. We are getting by, the 4 day winter storm we had melted away, so being able to care for the critters has improved as well.

I'm glad to hear Brian is home and doing well. He certainly isn't lacking in the humor department!
Hopefully the weather will cooperate enough to give you ample time to winterize. Winterizing for me means making sure I have mud boots and a raincoat. I can only imagine what you must have to do.
Take care and hang in there!
