Hi all Do any of you use the pellet bedding, and if so how do you like it? How much per stall and how often is it changed? T hanks

I use and love pelleted bedding. The key IMO is to bed deeply then add pellets as needed - not completely strip stalls. I bed deeper than most - I bed initially with 6 bags fully fluffed with water - then add another 2-3 without fluffing and stir them in. I tend to gather the bedding more in teh area that the horse sleeps - they will work the bedding out to the edge while the move around the stalls so by doing this, it make ssure that they have a comfy bed. I scoop out all poop and then stir in pea as long as it is not saturated and clumped. Once an area is starting to clump I fully remove it. I also pull all bedding back away from any pea spots and sprinkle with sweet pdz to help keep any smell down. If you are using pellets it is key to have them over mats - otherwise they get mixed in with the dirt and create a monster of a mess.
I find that with my normal size horses I add about 1-2 bags a week MAX if the stalls are cleaned well each day and the horses are turned out all day. With my big guys though - I bed different - i don't fluff pellets AT ALL when initially bedding since their big ol feet crunch them up quickly. I add 10-12 bags of pellets! Then, I stir things around after the entire stall is cleaned so that it mixes the fluffed and pellets together. They pea ALOT so take out all pea spots to avoid the stalls getting saturated. THEN - replace any area that I take out with pellets. I go through about 4 bags a week added to those stalls.
There are tons of brands but of ALL of them my favorite by far are ABM pellets. Theya re a bit smaller bag, but IMO they not only hold up better, soak up more urine - but they also keep the smell down better. if I have a choice, those are the only brand I use.
