This is going to be controversial to some......and I'm sure they're going to be raked over the coals for this by pro-slaughter people. I think it's a great idea and a great start though. While I'd hate to see any horses put down if they're not suffering, it's better than the alternative. Posted on BAEN: (more info via the link) Did you see this? I hope it is successful www.norcalequinerescue.com/clinics.php " At the clinic people can bring their horses to our vet office and have the horses humanely euthanized for only $25.00 on the day of the Clinic. With your help we would be covering all the additional cost of Euthanasia. The only way we can make this happen is if you pledge to help save horses from a brutal death in a slaughter house. It takes $100 in donations to provide this service per horse. We are currently accepting clinic pledges for our first euthanasia clinic tentatively planned for December 17th. "

I applaud them for the effort, and plan to donate to the effort. I wish we could somehow let every person trying to sell their 29 year old horse about the clinic.

We need to get ads up on Craigslist and get them flagged as best of so they're not deleted by the KB's....it's on BAEN.....
We do this for our dogs and cats, it's about time it's done for the horses as well.

S - thanks for much for posting this! What a great idea, but will no doubt be controversial.
Hope you don't mind that I cross-posted it over on the CBER BB.
I sent in a pledge, and I hope we can market the heck out of this, help get the exposure it needs.

We, too think this is a good idea-much better than selling off at auction for the kill buyers-one question we both had tho-what happens to the remains and how is that to be handled? Lisa

Not sure how the remains will be handled the day of the clinic, but they most likey set up a contract ahead of time with a renderer to pick up the bodies. The only other thing Ic ould think of is that the horses are not euthenized on the spot - but rather hauled back somewhere else and this is just a drop off situation if it is a TENT - if it is being done at a clinic, then most likely they are set up to move teh horse when they are dead. Certainly is not like movig a dog or cat.
i just donated as well. I think that this is a great thing - and initially I think alot of people are going to have a hard time with it - but when presented with the alternative, hopefully at least SOME will choose this option. There will always be the heartless greedy people who feel that if they can make a couple hundred at an auction vs. pay they will go for that instead.
