I've had a few friends telll me of a GREAT opportunity this week: A local grammar school is holding a silent auction and someone has donated a 3 year old, unbroke, REGISTERED(!), arabian mare!
a) Why would I bid on that? In the last week I could have picked up locally for free: one 6yr old unbroke mustang, one 14 yr old sound 4th level dressage TB mare, one 12 yr old well-broke AQHA gelding. Also a nice, sound 16h 12yr old kid-friendly TB mare for $450
b) what a creative way of dumping an unwanted horse on any ol' dumbass who thinks they are getting a deal. I wonder if they will screen the bidders at all...

Hey Becky, tell me more about that AQHA gelding...
and I agree on the "donation" of a horse they can't get rid of... now it will go to some idiot who doesn't KNOW that!

Owner of dressage TB mare and QH gelding moved to North Carolina in Friday. She tried to sell the horses then a week before the move put up the free ad. She said they "had" to go together because they love eachother, but in reality they have been alone together in pasture for about a year and are VERY herdbound.
The gelding had some sort of hind end lameness, she really couldn't describe. The vet did surgery to "cut something that was catching in his knee" about 5 years ago. The vet here does a patellar ligament desmotomy on any horse he can so I assume that's what it was. He wanted to do it on Manny and also to Redhorse's gelding to "see if it cured the problem". (Seems to me you would want a conclusive diagnosis on this being the problem, rather than doing the surgery as a diagnostic procedure...) She said he doesn't show any lameness anymore, but husband "lathers him up" regularly and he isn't lame afterward, but she doesn't think he should "do endurance."
A local gal is feeding them and another is a backup if someone didn't come forward in a few days. I'll check in and see what their status is and get the pics.

Here's the ad with pictures: humboldt.craigslist.org/grd/888659031.htmlI can contact the local gals (not Carolyn in the ad) and see what's up if you want. I can either of them in until transportation is arranged. I really hope she didn't cave and give them to this nasty little girl who keeps getting new horses and her parents "get rid of" the old ones when they aren't perfect. Let me know if you are interested and I can go and assess and take better pics.

Is the Tb mare the one on the left? dark bay? Is she really 4th level?
Takes the right kind of trainer to start a 3 yr old Arabian...well I started all mine at 4, they are too smart and very sensitive, but if done right they never buck. crazy to make that a prize--not even close to free-it should come with training too, then it'd be a sensible prize.

Yeah, icey, that's her. Want her? I can keep her until thankgiving and my sis can take her over to redding. You can pic her up from there. Her name is Auria. The boy is Jasper.

I think it takes about 3 hours to get to your place... I ought to come out and ride her. so has it been a year since she's been ridden, or just that they've been in the same pasture for a year? Is she wearing shoes? hmmm very tempting...I only know to 2nd level, this horse could teach me alot!

I had to walk all the way up the mountain along side my daughter today as she rode her pony...I can't wait to get a sound horse to ride!

argh, you guys are killing me! I'm interested, but need a horse specifically who is chill... very chill. I just can't do gymkhana on mr Bob Marley any more... he is nervous, antsy, and really REALLY wants to launch me... especially at larger shows. anyway... he needs a trail home, he loves trails.... or a kids riding in arena home... he's great at home. loves to jump little stuff... but I need a gymkhana at a walk and trot, and canter type horse, who can stand there and sleep at the gate for a half hour waiting our turn.... do quiet trails... and NO BUCKING. :-) not a lot, I know... hehe... just a perfect dead broke horse. hehe... mta: oh yeah, and stocky... I need one with a bigger butt than my big arse... :-) that's important... LOL!!!

I really should have posted their info last week, sorry!
They haven't just been sitting in pasture, but I think they only riding they have been doing is trails. The owner said the mare is not in "show shape" right now. I think the gal that is feeding them is the one that actually showed her, so I can get more info on her training.
Jasper is 15h - I haven't seen him in person so don't know if he's stocky or slight. He may need some time before he is calm/quiet. He is very herd bound - the local gal that is overseeing this said that separating them is "dangerous" as they get frantic.
I find that a few months in pasture with a bigger herd does wonders for these insecure horses. Being one of an isolated pair is pretty artificial.
Does Bob Marley like men?

Oh, the owner said that when she was selling the mare, she was priced at $10,000. I don't know if that is indicative of her true worth. She said she was giving the mare away as inducement to take the gelding and keep them together.
If I can get a reply from someone to see if they're still available I can head down to check them out. They may be a couple of raspy, broke-down nags in reality so we probably shouldn't get our hopes up.

Sounds like he wouldn't work for me... herdbound is hard at gymkhana where they have to go into the arena alone and keep their mind on business...
As for Bob, he is fine with men... so long as they are gentle with him, he only gets more hyped up when you are too firm with him. he is light light light... to the bit and the leg. moves off the seat, and luvs trails... seriously, sometimes you have to get him to watch the trail, as he is looking at the pretty scenery! We went out for 2 hours or so yesterday, and he was in heaven... even steps off the trail to pee pee... :-) such a tidy boy.

Okay, finally got a reply - they are supposed to be moving to a new place this week actually closer to me. I'll keep in touch. It sounds like a good place, a couple of horse crazy kids, experienced mom and horse-tolerant dad. We'll see how it works out. I don't know what your budget is, Beth, but I've been lusting after this guy. It sounds like he is better in arena than trails: humboldt.craigslist.org/grd/881471909.html

He is pretty, but I don't know, he doesn't trip my trigger... his fronts are already contracted in the heels, and he's very upright thru the pasterns... and I need a really calm boy... all the time calm... :-) that one is flighty she says...
who are you looking for a horse for?

Yeah, I noticed the pasterns too. I wanted to discount it as a photo artifact.
It must be pretty tough finding a horse with get up and go, finds arena work interesting, but is otherwise calm and quiet. Do you still have Baron? Is he not into it?
I'm looking for one for beginner hubby (6'4" 200lbs) so needs to be sound. He's calm, conscientious and light, but a bit oblivious so needs a horse that is pretty forgiving and will look out for him. I've been corresponding with Jaime regarding Champ - I worry about his arthritis though.

I have Baron, but he is quick at heart, and still not quite chill enough for me... he is a Ranch Versatility type... ready for quick rollbacks, spins, slides... uh, NOT me!!! I know... I"M WAY too picky ,or is it chicken??? :-) Bob is very forgiving, as far as looking out for you he will, on trails... in the arena... he is a ball of fire tho... well, a ball of nerves... more like it... on trail, he is a perfect angel. not a bit of arthritis, and he will be the ONLY horse to come back from the trail or show with not a drop of sweat... we were shocked he had a bit of dampness under his blanket on Sunday's ride!
for me, I"m FINE with not a lot of get up or go.... I prefer slow... lotta slow... but able to canter.... I know, I know... a horse that does not exist...
