This is a REAL problem....for me...he's Peruvian, not Paso Fino..........aarrrggghhhhh. This gal is helping the owner find him a home........the owner's wife just had twins, and "no time or money for the horse'. He's in Penn Grove..........I can't get up there this weekend to see him....is anyone close? It appears he hasn't been breeding- "just a puppy-dog", and ridden bareback in the pasture...... I had her write down the names of the known kill-buyers...although she has 4 horses, (and is awaiting the delivery of another from Canada), she wasn't familiar with the name 'kill-buyer', so at least I educated her.

Way to go, thank you!
Will update the thread.
Doesn't it just amaze you how so many horse owners STILL don't know about slaughter, KBs, etc. ?? I have to believe that our "grass roots" efforts here are making a difference, if only one horse owner at a time.

No call yet from the owner........but I imagine time is short with twins!!! I didn't get the feel there had been any other enquiries..most people would be turned away by 'stallion', except a KB, so that's why I impressed on her their names, and that they don't show up and say, "I'm sending him to slaughter".

This is a strange ad, twins or no twins. I wonder if there is more to it . . . like DSLD. Apparently Peruvians are vulnerable to this condition.
I'm just really surprised that she is offering such a horse for free. From what I can tell, this breed is not over-represented and it seems that there would be some Peruvian fancier out there who would take him if there weren't other, potentially expensive and heartbreaking problems.
Just my opinion, but a free TB, a free QH, a free Arab - that makes sense, even if I dont' like it. A free champion Peruvian stallion doesn't make sense.
Just my two-cents.

Hi Anne - I was chatting with Katie Moore/watemarkfarm about this situation today, and her reaction was identical to yours ... don't see many gaited horses being given away unless there's more to the story.
Katie also mentioned that these breeds are more likely to develop DSLD, and speculated that might be a factor here.
Poor guy, being a stallion doesn't help his chances, although Katie thought it might make him less attractive to the KBs.

Yes, I'm well aware of DSLD- I won't take him without a Vet check. The owner is a guy who bought the horse for his 'prior' girlfriend......they broke up and I guess she left the horse. Then he met his current wife, and now he's asked the wife of a workmate to help him find a home for the horse. There could be a 'tag' to the story, but if he's willing to wait till I can get up there to see him, I'm willing to make the drive. But I want a horse I can ride......

K - Katie mentioned she could take a look at this horse if you were interested in possibly taking him, Penngrove is relatively close by to her.

we have a feeler out to a local friend... the families mother recently sold her herd and is moving out of state, they bred peruvian pasos for years and years on Mt Diablo. ... might have been one of hers? who knows. she gave a few away, but the family says those all went to 'friends'... you never know tho. might be one they know. they show and ride... anyway, just put the feeler out to them...

I hope he's OK and that the two of you are a match.

Well, I finally got to speak to the actual owner..........well, not the OWNER.........the owner is Grandma and she's in a nursing home..........I'm not very impressed with grandson on the phone............ The horse hasn't seen a Vet in a year...........and the reason he has to get rid of him is, he has Pigeon Fever in his groin, and he has no money to take care of it. aacckkkkk. I asked about soundness........"well, if if he got his feet trimmed, he'd be fine"..........oy vay!!!! The horses's name is Rezo Real..........I did 'google' it and got a couple of shows that named him, but no photos. Or breeding..........but he may have been inported. He COULD be a diamond in the rough, but Pigeon fever in the groin..........what do you think I'm looking at?

Kerry, have you had a chance to connect with Katie to see if she can go check him out?
This seems like such an unfortunate situation. Fortunately, Beth has a lot of experience with PF and may be a good resource for you.
Did you let her know how tricky the KBs can be when they show up?

Ah, here's the thread.
Kerrie, the gelding that had PF in the groin recovered just fine. In his case, he had a bit of complication the abcess wouldn't open - very deep - so he did go visit David. If you want, I can internet-introduce you to his owner and she can fill you in. Her boy was late 20's when he had it - so that made for a longer recovery too. But, he made it in great shape!
Keep my posted! Wish I could go with you to visit, but Life is intruding on life. :-(

I've scheduled to meet with a local Vet up there on Saturday.......even the Office gals know there's a horse there in need.........she was writing down the Info- says 'gelding'? I say, 'stallion', she says .....HE IS? ? I'm sorry that Katie will be out- he's right in Petaluma.

GGrrrrrrr........i KNEW he was a low-life. So I have the Vet scheduled, and the Vets office staff tell me that the property needs a gate code.........so I call him for the Code, which he gives me.........I hang up.......and 5 minutes later, he calls to say, "Uh........Someone just came and picked the horse up- sorry". Now I"m REALLY worried that it was a KB.........although there was no direct link thru the BAEN ad.
