Figi, you are my hero. You got on this horse, scared and shaking. That says a lot for both you and the horse. There is a certain amount of trust there in both of you.
How much is she asking?
I have to leave Grandma's. I will try to watch the video from home tonight. Thank you, darling Figi. You're the bomb!
We'll ride together at the campout. You won't be scared. We will have a blast!

OMG Figi! THANK YOU!!! You looked GREAT on him! and he does look quite sweet, and easy except that cantering piece... oh boy... Can you PM me your phone number so I can chat with you? now I have to think seriously about him and what to do! :-) He is pretty isn't he? did you notice his right front hits the ground a little lateral side first? (I 'can' seriously say tho, I'm glad they gelded him, he is not perfection in a horse... so a stallion for a decade? good decision to geld... ;-) )

I think he's the most gorgeous boy.......those chestnut ears, and black eyeliner..........and lovely carriage. A good barefoot trimmer may be able to 'adjust' his stride a little- or at least make it so his legs aren't stressed.

And Figi, you did GREAT! Did you ride English/show dressage in your previous life?
Piopico is so right about the trimming, you know.
Uh T-Bone, are you in love with Baron? You know he is named after my brother. I hear he prefers blonds ... (!!!!!)

I really love to ride western but seam to buy english horses. The mare I have now I have done dressage with the last couple of years and I'm now trying to make her a trail horse. Watching the video and the whole liver thing has made me very motivated to lose weight. I hate being fat I'm also a big Baron fan! He has always been one of my favs.

I love your pink boots, by the way, Figi. And Baron may be joining us at the camp-out. Will you be needing a horse to ride?

Post by figi on Nov 21, 2008 23:41:10 GMT -5
The pink boots have little horses on them too. They are just rubber boots I found but I like them. You should see me ride in them at the dressage barn with my friend.
I'm hoping to have my mare going by then. She has never been out of an arena but I think I got the hormone thing figured out and she is a new horse! I have been doing a lot of natural horsemanship with her too. But if we are not safe I might have to take you up on the offer.

Do we know how he does in the arena? Since Bob Marley seems to be more of a mountain man (we should have guessed, huh?) and you want a horse for shows, this is important. I really enjoyed watching how he worked with Figi. I think he is a love. He needs a different bit or NO bit. (You know how I am about bits, don't you, at least on certain horses?) Would his whiteness fair well in the California sun? I bet he would prefer flies over mud (or is it I who would prefer flies over sun)? Write down all the pros and cons of all you are considering. Your priorities will pop out immediately.
He is so beautiful and unusual looking. You and he would be show-stoppers!

I think he has done some arena stuff before. I just dont see much geting to this guy. It sounds like the daughter does 4-h and he has been around all that. you seen him kick in the round pen and it was not much and only once. I think with someone willing to be firm with him and remind him he has to do what is asked of him when asked he will be great. He has just been a babysitter for too long. I think the if he looks as good as he does up here in muddy wa he will look great down is sunny ca. And lord knows his feet will love the dry!!! Not to pressure you but I'm willing to board him for you at cost untill you can ship him down!! I will even help with all the paper work Give me a call and we can chat about him.

ok, well since you are UP... hehe, I'll call figi! we went to see Twilight last night, so I got home late.
oh, and hey!!! You Baron fans need to step right up! he is rotting here in my field!! I just 're=rescued' him to keep him from going to auction again! So, I put him in two months of trainging with Charles Wilhelm, THE master, and he is a 'new boy', and ready for a new owner! come and get 'em!! I love him, but he's not my riding connection... sadly

AJ...You are a funny girl! I do like the Baron! So when are you gals going to come to Bend for some real trail riding??? You should come for a riding vacation. We can take you up into the Mountains, lakes, streams, even some high deserst riding!
Beth, I know you like a bigger horse. We have a ranch here that has some nice Draft X's. I see on the one web that they have reduced some prices to $1500. I think two different owners now, but the horses have all come from the same stock. The other horses are still $5k and up. They have had some great horses that have gone to be great trail, arena, and jumping horses. I'll send you the web and you cane take a look.

Beth, are you sure you don't want Jack of Hearts, the APHA? He isn't nearly as "off" as Jet, does great barefoot, is great in the arena, is fast (won state barrel championships at 3), is 16h and has never bucked. Want me to take vids?

Oh duh... I just didn't connect the name.. .sorry Becky! No tho, Jack is 'patterned', and to me that is scary! I can't deal with a horse who wants to run! LOL! I have the anxiety, not so much the horses... so, when me AND the horse (Bob Marley) get together with nerves... argh... it's bad.
So, here I am looking at this video show again tonight :=) thinking thinking thinking...

hmmm, ok... well, she was SO sweet, a plain old Sorrel mare, nothing fancy in the color dept, but her face was cute, nice eye... She surprisingly had horrible healing wounds to the fronts of her hocks! Um, she failed to mention that little thing... ooops. so, that kept my attention for a bit. she was completely reactive about the hind legs, would not pick them up until I spent some time reassureing her, but when she finally picked one up, it must have hurt, so she yanked it back and did the 'owie, owie' dance for a bit... argh... feet are long... did some ground work, that was great... obviously had some great training there. responsive with a ton of 'try'.. . only thing she didn't 'do' was her lateral bending ... had no idea about what I was asking for there... then we saddled up.. she did great... the owner hopped on top and took her for a spin... she has the tiniest little trot, eeensie weensie trot... She did a little canter too, with a big lift on the front end as she departed. nice whoa on verbal, rides mostly on leg commands not much bit. Still in a snaffle, no neck reining.
she was soft, with a low head set. some tail swish, but not too bad.
So, I hopped on top... she is quiet to mount... and we took off, backwards. whoa, back, whoa, back... hehe... I had the HARDEST time getting her to go forward! she has a totally different set of aides than what I use! a squeeze means back, teeny heel means forward, tap tap of heel means trot... one heal, canter. well, it was disconcerting!!! she would walk along then throw it in reverse!!! and I couldn't get her to quit it! I had to take a break at one point, it was getting to both of us! then we tried again, and we worked it out better... I tried a canter but just a bit, and the feel was very weird to me! she was on the wrong lead, but that throw up the front end to canter was weird!
Then my daughter hopped on, and did much better at going forward... but maybe too good, she got going faster, and the mare cantered... and ooops, she stops by a whoa and sit, not by any bit pressure... so Amy fell off... argh... she is fine... but ego bruised to fall in front of an audience of strangers.
I got back on, and we did fine, walking and trotting... she can trot the teeny trot, or a bit faster... I didn't canter again.
we ended on a good note. The mare is very friendly, but she does not stand still after you stop. she is looking for what you want next... so she tries this and that... lots of try in her...
so, now I need some help..... what can I expect from her? Can I have a trainer do a tune up and expect her to stop that big lift to canter? can I get her to move out a teeny bit more at the canter? and lastly, she just dove her nose to the ground on me... not on my daughter or the owner, so it was obviously something I did with my feet... can I get her to stop that? the owner said most everything is just bred into her... not a whole lot of it was 'trained in... '.
what do ya'll think?

Yes, she is five, and was trained as a 3 year old, for a year, then had a year of some small shows, then was bred last year, delivered and now weaned a pretty overo colt, good mom. she has great breeding so they say, I don't know. all Western Pleasure lines. they are asking 1800 for her.

I agree with Tina. She sounds pretty green, so if you are going to take a chance on a young 'un, you should probably find one that feels "right." You are going to be spending a lot of time with the horse, so if it doesn't click you probably want to keep looking. Or just get her - what's another one? I'd negotioate down the price, though! Sounds like you would have to kick down for training.

And I agree with Tina and Becky. She doesn't sound like the right horse for what you want, Beth, and you are exposed to a lot of horses. She sounds sweet, but that is not the only priority for which you are looking. She just doesn't sound *right* for what you need.
Please tell Amy how sorry I am that she fell. Amy is so precious and sensitive. Please tell her that I had to do an emergency dismount off Lawrence that was anything but graceful. He went into a rodeo bucking fit, because I got on him inside the pasture - in his crib. Naughty-naughty, AJ. I should have known better. It felt wrong when it was even suggested. But that fall really hurt my feelings until I got back on and went for a ride. I hope to go to Greenwaters Park with Amy this summer. Maybe Token will help my boy move forward in that direction instead of backing all the way home!
How are you feeling about the Elephant in the Arena horse in Washington?
