I read this the other day and have been thinking about it ever since. I even went to Amazon.com and bought the song (only 99 cents) and am now listening to it over and over.

She was something in her day
"Having a career in folk music is kind of like being in the Federal Witness Protection Program. People know you're out there. They just can't quite find you." Garnet Rogers
He said that before Youtube was around. www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0c3gA76uPQ
Garnet Rogers is a Canadian singer-songwriter and the title of his song is Small Victory.
The real mare behind his the song is Two Bitter, a Kentucky-bred filly born in 1969, whose biography is in the lyrics.
"She was shunted round from track to track
From Kentucky up to Maine
They'd run her in cheap claimers
All doped up to mask her pain"
Two Bitter earned over $12 thousand in 61 starts. She went to auction as a broodmare, barren for five years, "all odds against her" -- the only likely bidder was the meat man.
But the black mare caught the eye of Gail Parker Rogers, wife of Garnet Rogers, who "threw good cash after bad" and brought Two Bitter home to Tamarack Lane Farm, where she lived for ten years.
She produced a few more foals, including Fine Romance, a TB stallion who made his mark on the Canadian sport horse world and continues to do so through his offspring. He's still alive and kicking with his own website (www.afineromance.ca).
A little closer to home
The Washington Thoroughbred Winter Mixed Sale catalog is available on line (http://www.washingtonthoroughbred.com/) for the auction to be held at Emerald Downs on Sunday, December 7th at 1 pm in the Sales Pavillion. The horses can be viewed in advance in the barn area and then in the walking ring before they enter the auction arena. .
There are a multitude of broodmares in the catalog, some in foal, some not. There will be horses of racing age, yearlings and weanlings too.
You should register in advance if you intend to bid by filling out the buyer credit request in the auction catalog. If you don't get to this you can go directly to the sales office to do so. There is a $300 minimum at the sale to keep the meat buyers away.
I went to the sale in 2005 and while there were some mares who fetched only the minimum, prices overall were well above that. This year may be very different. Results from the September sale, where average price was down by 23% from 2007, and the November Keeneland sale in Kentucky, where average prices were down 39%, have seriously lowered expectations.
I don't advocate taking on any horse purely propelled by sentiment, particularly a mare in foal, unless you have the resources to do so; however if you can, this is the year to find your own Small Victory.
On the other hand, you can have your own copy of the song for $1 -- it is available through itunes and amazon.com. It is part of his 1990 album Small Victories, as well as in a 2002 compilation called All That Is, and his albums are available via his website (http://www.garnetrogers.com/).
