We went to St Louis to visit two years ago, and by odd circumstances there was a foundered pony who needed a home, and Foxie from the old CBER board lived there and had him and had a trailer to donate so we could get him home to CA... well, it all worked out and we brought him home. I ought to do a slide show, as we stopped at all of the Route 66 tourist spots to see with my kids... and with Acorn. He went in the Teepee at the Continental Divide and all... :-) not a sweeter pony has lived.
however, Mr Acorn had cushings, and severe Insulin Resistance... and was foundered on all four feet. we never got a good handle on his disease. He was ok for some time, then this last year he just went down hill, and he became quite sore most of the time. we did more xrays last summer and his bones were deteriorating to spite valiant efforts at diet, medication and supplimentation... we did some agressive trimming to xrays for a few months, but had to finally say enough was enough...
Acorn flew free today, after a huge bowl of nasty sweet and full of molasses and grain LMF performance feed... (a HugE no=no on his diet for years now) and a long talk with me and his buddy Poncho at his side. He did not even stiffen or take a deep breath, he just crumpled to the ground and rested peacefully... for the first time in a very long time....
Fly free Acorn, finally out of pain. You will meet us there some day.... until then, find Apricot and let her know Poncho is doing ok... The old man is outliving everyone!!! You have no more pain.... and can eat all the green grasses you desire... enjoy.

Yes, Acorn was an adorable little appy mini / pony. It has always been a great story that we are crazy enough to rescue a pony all the way from Arkansas!
"no, we can't take him.. we can't bring a trailer all the way to Missouri and back. What's that? You will give us the trailer too??? Oh sure... no problem... what's one more!"
It has been sad watching him just not be able to battle back. We would think we'd make progress on his feet then he'd be back to horrible again. But twice when we thought he'd told us he was ready to go, he would trot up the hill and look a little perky. Finally we knew it was time. It's nice to know he is out of pain.

here is a pic of the little fellow... he was such a trooper... sweet as the day is long... he came to us kind of shy and scared, but got warmed up to us and really tried hard... this was on the trip from AK to CA... and some a bit later after he settled in here...

Beth, Thank you for posting this. I cried when I found it. In my mind it's hard to believe he really is gone. He'll forever be sunning in "sunny California" to me, and perhaps that is the best thing in my mind. We lost his best friend "buddy" last year, he was 35 years young, and I know it would have torn Acorn up if he was here when it happened. They were two peas in a pod and couldn't have looked anymore different! I moved (again) last week and while going through my things a picture of Acorn in our field with the sun setting behind him fell out of a book. I sat down on the floor and stared at it for a long while, remembering that spunky little guy. It seems like just yesterday a friend of mine called to say she had a little Appy pony in her trailer who needed a place to land and would I be home in 15 minutes. He could hold his own with the big horses and everyone knew his place in the line. I have a picture I'll have to dig up of him and my tabby barn cat. All through QT when Acorn arrived here that cat would chill in Acorn's stall with him. In the winter time it wasn't unusual to see him curled up with Acorn lying on the stall floor. The picture I have is Acorn out in his paddock with this kitty perched up on his back soaking up the sun's rays. *Sigh* That little pony made the world a brighter place. many hugs and thanks, - Jen

I still have a hard time not looking for him when I go to the barn every night... I'd have let him in the house if I could... he was that sweet. the last two winters he went in the barn aisle at night as he wanted to lay down but wouldn't go in the stall, so to avoid laying in the wet or mud, I'd made him stay nights inside! he was such a stinker about it! he wanted OUT in the morning! hehe... but he'd always be ready for a nice scratch fest before going, and I'd get some kisses... he was so sweet! I miss him dearly, but am grateful he is no longer in pain.

Oh my gosh, I just am getting caught up here. I'm so very sorry to learn Acorn crossed The Bridge. I absolutely LOVE the picture of him in New Mexico!
FRR always does right but it's rescues. I have no doubt this cutie pie had the time of his life living with you all.
