There are already 5 horses at the auction, several rather skinny. There will probably be more by Monday. They auction the horses at noon on Monday. You can see them at the auction yard right off the 101 freeway at Petaluma Livestock Auction Yard Inc. 84 Corona Rd. Petaluma 707-763-0893. maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=petaluma+auction&fb=1&cid=18402426007276256805&li=lmd&z=14&t=mThey have been going for .10 to .25 cents a pound when I have been there. I think it is safe to say that most will be destined to slaughter in Mexico or Canada at this point. Unless we all step in. Like Cherokee - the mustang that was only another post -, these are horses that have lived in our community; maybe we saw them compete in ponyclub- or their offspring. Can we not allow them at the very least a bullet to the head after a good meal if there are no homes for them?? I could fundraise if we had a few places for them to land... Can anyone foster a horse or two? Can you look around your neighborhood here in West Coast NorCal land and see whom might be able to house a horse? Can your facility take one? Our small new org has not got alot of money just yet - we could spend about $250; but we can advertise and evaluate horses for new homes. We can deliver. We might be able to find trainers to work with young ones. Does anyone want to help these Christmas horses? Can they find a place at the Inn? Call or email me right away if you can offer help. Well, since I usually try to donate to save a horse for Christmas gifts, I can help with some funds. Let me know where I can send some funds to to help maybe one horse.

Swissgirl that would be wonderful, of course! Our website is www.saferhorse.com. We have filed for our non-profit. Donations can be sent snail mail to : SAFER 9501 Mill Station Rd Sebastopol, CA 95472 We are just west of Santa Rosa in NorCal. I guess we have to get that pay pal thing going. I saw a sign that said "Unattended children will be given an expresso and a free puppy" Right about now I would like to change that to free horse, of course!

LOL, we had a chinese gift exchange, and my boyfriend said I should make a nice card, and write on it "this card entitles you to a free Mustang" ;D then wrap it up nicely!
Still trying to find a home for the 2 that I picked up in July!

Well here is where we are so far on the horses at the Petaluma auction yard:
1. I spoke to Johhny today who is in charge of the horses at the Petaluma auction. I and hopefully Sherri will go down and look them over tomorrow at 2 and get pictures-I hope to establish a GREAT rapport with Johnny and find out more info about how they work down there; esp regard to "disposal." 2. A volunteer has offered to receive them in a quarantine area. She has an empty barn and nice facilities. She cannot afford to feed them so I have to buy some hay and maybe supplements. I will ask for sponsors once we have pics. She will feed them 3 times a day and do turn-out and hand graze. But we need some assitance to muck out stalls and work with them to evaluate- take a shift once a week say. I will put this out to volunteers.
3. I am prepared to euthanize any horse that we cannot find a good home for. 4. Katie Moore from Watermark Farms has put us in her blog and we got $150 donations from that. Katie also gave us $50. have donations of around 600 at this time plus Charlotte from our Board pledged $200. Can anyone here in Santa Rosa sell us some hay at their cost? 5. We REALLY need a vet that will work with us for cheap. Someone to get meds from and do blood work and evalues. OK - who will work for homemade Pie of choice?? As soon as I have pics then I will post and start advertising for sponsors and fosters and adoptors. This is the "Christmas Horses: Room at the Inn" project. What can I say....I was in marketing.... Much Gratitude to All; Kate

I love Dr. Horrell at Canyon Large Animal. He is my vet and I think his prices are reasonable. Also I've heard that Sonoma-Marin Veterinary Clinic has very reasonably priced services. I can tell you the ones that I would not use from my experience with them but I don't want to post it you can pm if you have questions.

Can we not allow them at the very least a bullet to the head after a good meal if there are no homes for them?? I would hope there are so many efforts to be made before this is even thought of.

Report on Monday's Petaluma auction: First off....I cannot take the three horses standing there that will be shot soon. THe foster I had lined up is in foreclosure and these are not quick turnaround horses. So still needing to find a place for these three ASAP. They are docile and tho not trained I think would be easy to train for kids horses. The older one just needs to stand somewhere and reassure the younger ones. Here they are: s202.photobucket.com/albums/aa279/kate5555/Petaluma%20Auction%20Dec22/They are the 2 greys and one chestnut that are together. Would make cute kids horses. THE AUCTION: There were 5 horses; 2 small shetlands, one half grown that had a halter imbedded in his face that had been just removed. They each sold to private parties for just under 400 EACH. Smart move to dump them 2 days before Christmas. Three other horses; 8 yr dark brown mare, trained to ride, huge TB gelding 17 hands trained to ride and a 15 hand cream horse - all three went to a gal I was standing next to - a rescuer from SoCal in Lancaster. So SO relieved to see that happen. Happy Holidays. CALL ME ASAP if you can take any of the three in the pictures - I will get them to you. Kate Sullivan SAFER 707-824-9543

I just got an email stating that they are gone and may have gone to slaughter. How sad that no one could help them in time:(

Unfortunately we ran out of time for these 3 horses at the Petaluma auction. I just got off the phone with the auction yard. We lost those horses to slaughter. Even tho they said they were going to shoot them; from our conversation we deduced they did NOT get shot NOR did they find a regular buyer. They were there yesterday morning and I had a call in to that did not get returned; I dont know if the fellow even got it. I had just gotten a place for them temporarily and a back up after that. But too late. We must find more ways to alert the general public as well as the horse community. We need a list of pre-approved foster homes ready to take horses. SAFER needs volunteers to help with this activity most of all. Hope your Holidays are Great - mine will be a little quieter than I thought...sorry to be a bummer. Kate Sullivan SAFER 707-824-9543

God I feel so bad for those 3 horses.
Worse yet I have found that only a few horse people really want to know & do something about horse slaughter.
I get the "that so great you help these horses" from other horse people. But once thats said they don't really want to hear anymore about it.
At this point I think our hardest opponent is the horse community, not the general public.
The non horse people seem much more interested in learning more about all this & helping if they can.
Now a days the only horse people that have my respect are horse rescuers.

I am so sorry for the 3 ( and many others ) that we lose daily. There are not enough homes, money & volunteers to take them all. NO MORE BREEDING of less that quality horses. And, there are several of those out there already needing homes!

I feel horrible! Just too think those little guys spent their last days in the mud, rain and freezing cold waiting to go to slaughter. I live about 5 minutes from this auction yard and knowing they were there just sucks and there was nothing I could do about it. I wish I had property. God Bless you little ones. I hope who put you there will feel your pain one way or another!
