I have no idea on the story. Not going to judge. Could be a photo of horses just rescued. I don't see ribs.
I have always though the health of a horse was more important than a silky mane and tail. ;D

It is a touching postcard, but I have to agree that the manes make me want to look at the rest of the horse. I think that after we have been involved with rescue for a while that we tend to see alarm bells where most folks' first impressions would be that everything was fine... frankly I think that this is a good thing although it does mean a loss of innocence. That was one of the things my film professor used to say... that once we had learned all the elements involved with shooting film that we would never be able to simply watch a movie and go with the willing suspension of disbelief again. We proved a while ago with the thread on the foal that our own perceptions can have an impact on how we interpret a photo. Those interpretations might be good or bad, but they usually mean that we take a harder look and I think that in the long run that only helps the horses.

Ya know.....that picture has alot of snow in it plus it's snowing rather hard I would say. . If the horses were in a very windy place with lots of snow, I could see why there manes would get twisted very fast. How many of you go out in a snow storm and comb out manes? I would make a bet not very darn many.

I saw that and just assumed "wild" ... I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that!

New question: Where did sherigraf go? Why is she a guest now? I like her very much and want her back. (Yes, I just stomped my hoof down hard like Ivy/Soot.)

My paint mane is easy 20 inches long .... it twists into dreads so easy, especially in the wind, doesn't mean she's neglected in any way... I like the pic.....

Sherigraf deleted her account after her reply to cutiepiepmu on this thread. I would bet that she comes back after a few days or so.

WOW - didn't mean to start drama lol. I agree - manes get tangled - I was just making a statement about how I percieved the photo. Perception is always one of those things that is individual they look more like dreadlocks to me than braids I guess.... Sara

I have to agree, I love long manes & many of our personal horses have them. The wind blows hard in this area & my good horses mane can look like that in 2 days..he is far from neglected. I also didn't think they were skinny at all its tough to tell when a horse has its neck turned like that. I just thought it was a cute picture.

wow... I didn't go looking at this thread for a while either... dang... we get dreads in all the manes, especially after a windy rain, they get wet and they dread... and I do not go brushing them all out every am... the horses don't care, and they are not neglected... Sundance LIVES in dreads...!!! he has a wavy thick mane and tail, and if you brush it out it is a fuzz 6 in. thick! cute, but an afro!
I noticed the dreads, but same as some of you I thought, 'how sweet is that picture?'

One of my Mustangs has a really long mane, it get's twisted all the time, you can brush it out, after a windy rainy day it's all twisted again.

I thought they were mustangs.....Man, our Arab cross horses have REALLY long, fine manes...I can brush them out and 2 days later they are a WRECK! My horses all look like abused, drowned rats right now....but it's their choice to be out in the wet....even though they look pathetic, they choose to stand in the rain/snow and get soggy and smash their faces into the mud REALLY deep.......grrr!!!! Then it's a lot of fun to roll in mud, after the snow has melted off.....UGH! Better yet, let's see how many blankies we can shred this winter.....I give up!

Yep Tash. I needed to count to ten...or one hundred. Some comments are so hard on my powers of 'ignortion' that I have to step back. Account deleting can be therapeutic. I'd expect to be able to see the ribs of the abused horse with tangled mane.....but what would that tell me? That the horse was old? Abused? Just rescued? Recovering from an illness? I don't know who the horses are but I bet they are just as happy as if they had just had their hair coiffed.
