Today we went to pick up items for our Livermore rescue and took the back road...and got a not so nice surprise... at a turnout off of Tesla Road we came across a dead mare who had been dumped there. She looks young, and was cared for guessing by her looks and being recently shod with aluminum shoes. What happened??? why dump a horse that was obviously being cared for??? maybe stolen? We went to the park area to report it, the park ranger said it had been reported, the horse was dumped yesterday afternoon, animal control had yet to pick it up. Does anyone knows this horse?... Sorrel, blaze, 3 socks, Maybe a farrier would recognize her, being shod with aluminum shoes is not that common, the shoes were hardly even worn. Looks like someone tried to take one off, but didn't succeed. Whoever just dumped this horse should be charged.... pics-not so nice *GRAPHIC* farm4.static.flickr.com/3116/3169163777_c22ed33d3b.jpgfarm4.static.flickr.com/3085/3169993846_0352a1285f.jpgfarm4.static.flickr.com/3106/3169163835_f2c64791c2.jpg

Sorry, thought since I referred to her as dumped vs abandoned would be understood... pics are graphic, and to come around the corner and see her was quite the shock as well. Not so sure that this is a euthanized horse, I would think if someone had compassion enough to put a horse down for whatever reason, such a person would not just dump the body at the side of the road.

Poor sweet little thing, what is wrong with the world that you can just dump a horses body on the side of the road? That just makes me sick to my stomach.

I saw the ropes, and that just gave me the shivers. I hope this girl had an easy passing.

It looked to me that she was tied t the fence to hold her when the unloaded from the vehicle. no blood or signs of activity in the area besides tire tracks. I think she was dead before taken there. I did not look for a tat, there was no brand on the one side. I would think that animal control would look closer, I didn't want to move her or anything, just reported it. My thinking was she was obviously cared for, no maybe the death was not at the hands of the owner.I was thinking maybe she was stolen that's why I posted the pics, maybe someone would recognize her......

I didn't see this story posted on BAEN yet.... do you want to do that or can I have your permission to cross post? That certainly is the biggest reading group of Bay Area horse folks (don't know why I didn't ask sooner!)

That certainly is the biggest reading group of Bay Area horse folks (don't know why I didn't ask sooner!) Peg I thought about that as well but kept thinking it would show up. I also was surprised that nothing was reported in the Contra Costa Times, especially since it's the same general region as where the two horses were shot last year.

I did not post on BAEN, you are welcome to do so, I think that the area is east Alameda, Contra Costa starts at the SVRA park and the site was maybe 2 miles west of the park, at a drive/gate area.

Belinda -
Was this near Carnegie??? It sounds like she was dumped about a mile from where I board.
I've got a call into a friend who works at A/C to see if he can tell me anything. This was definitely Alameda County - San Juaquin County (Tracy) is the nearest boarder, not Contra Costa. This was also forwarded by a friend to the detective working the Roundtree case (Choctaw and Lucky who were shot 10/22/08 in North Livermore). I doubt they're related, but if she was stolen.....
When I first looked at the pics I thought she looked familiar - distinctive markings. My friend Jenn thought she looked familiar before I said anything, so now I'm worried we may know her.....going through pics from local Gymkhana's and shows when I get home......
hug your horses.

Stacie, Yes this was by Carnegie SVRA, down from the stable. was at the bottom of the hill at a turnout/drive area. Let me know if you find something out, am wondering even how she died, I saw no obvious injuries....

It's hard to say w/out a necropsy.....she looked to be in fairly good shape from what I could see in the pics.....Colic??? Especially with it being so cold, horses aren't drinking as much with can help induce that.

I saw on BAEN that Channel 2 News was headed out there this afternoon and were hoping to interview someone. Of course that was posted sometime after 4:00 pm.
Bummer, Gypsryn would have been the perfect person to talk to them. From BAEN:
Channel 2 wants interview re: horse found dead on Tesla - anyone?
Posted by Debbie Smith, BAEN on 1/8/2009, 4:44 pm Message modified by board administrator 1/8/2009, 5:21 pm It's 4:42 and Channel 2 is on the highway heading out to the area where the horse was found (will take them a while in this traffic). Is there anyone out there with information who would like to be interviewed for this story? If so, please call Amber Lee of Channel 2 on her cell asap at 510-599-3922. They hope to speak to the ranger if they get there in time.

They were at the Livery - I pulled in right after they'd left. Doesn't sound like they knew anything - alluded to the economy and people possibly not having the money to dispose of the body properly........don't know if it's being investigated or not, but apparently the sherrif investigating Choctaw and Lucky's murder is looking into this as well.
My husband thought he was a comedian...."look honey, there's your tack box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
