I know I am not the only one that lives out here-this looks like a good idea-they are TRYING to set aside some equestrian only trails in the trail system, but are getting no involvment from the actual horse people-(GEE big surprise there huh?) Hubby knows some people on the KP community council with him-and the folks that organized the farm tour-so maybe we can get some activity actually happening here-work party and networking-it will be fun. I will talk to my uncle-he does a lot of trail building for BCHW and DNR out on the Olympic Peninsula.-I am sure there are things for building horse trails that may differ from other types-etc. the attachment below was taken from the keypen.org site
WE HAVE SCHEDULED A SPECIAL MEETING TO DISCUSS EQUESTRIAN TRAILS. If you ride a horse on the Key Peninsula, please attend: Thursday, February 6th (7:00 - 9:00 pm), Home Fire Station.
This is the least developed trail in the system. Conceptually and practically, it has failed to progress for four reasons. First, our attempts to organize horse riders on the Key Peninsula has failed. Second, the horse riders attending our meetings seem to indicate a desire to coordinate equestrian efforts, but fail to follow through. Third, the number of professional stables and horse ranches on the peninsula are few. Fourth, horse riders express a preference for trails they can enjoy without having to drive their horses to a local trailhead.
Nevertheless, volunteer work so far has created a network of unconnected loops that link horse farms. If you want to see this effort come to fruition, please contact us <info@keypen.org> and get involved. Thank you.

I will try to arrange my schedule and be there. I agree - we need better trail structure out here. I am lucky since my property backs to a good extensive network of trails, but outside of hauling to banner - which the parking can be a pain and there are ALOT of dogs(not good for my un-dog-friendly horse!) there are not alot of options!! Can you also send an email out closer to the time to remind everyone to show up? Sara

I commend your efforts to organize the disorganized. I appreciate your idea of "horse only" trails but it limits your voice to get things done. The old saying, "the more the merrier" applies here.
I have worked for over 20 years on the Snohomish county area on an old railroad grade. Most of the original supporters are equestrians. We quickly learned that we weren't going to get the support and money we needed if it wanted a trail just for horses.
Accepting that we needed to share, we looked at other user groups who are reasonably horse friendly. That eliminates anything motorized. You might contact some hiker groups to see if they would be willing to help support your project.
When it comes to raising dollars for projects, the wider your base of support (hikers, cyclists, equestrians) the better your chances are for getting money.
Have you contacted your County Parks Department?
You mention there is a meeting scheduled for 2/6 at the Fire Station. If you will give me an address and maybe a phone number if someone has more questions, I will cross post this information to the Backcountry Horsemen of Washington chat page.
Good luck.

I am not organizing this-just want to get involved-thanks for your input! these trail systems are set up by the Key Peninsula Trails Committee-it was them that decided to seperate each trail system out by use. Hopefully I will find out what is needed to get this rolling better on the 6th. Ciao! Lisa

Cool-Hubby is directing a play that runs through that weekend-I normally go do concessions-will have to bow out cause I really want to go. (I should be allowed to be off the hook once in a while-I have been cooking for 20 for the past week-and one Hindu and one strict VEGAN in the mix)

I am going to phone the fire station in Home and see what they have scheduled. We have a KnowledgeBowl meet then the school play tomorrow-whichever day it is I will be missing the play-but will get concessions all set up-so I can cut out. (would you be going past the high school or is it easier to come by my house?)

Well geeze Lousie! No wonder they can't get anyone on board with this trail system-they aren't organized in the least bit themselves. It looks like there is no actual meeting tonight, last night or anytime on the horizon. WTF? no idea. Will keep trying to get ahold of someone in the future-but for now-looks like no one is organizing this. I know things are pretty laid back out in that neck of the woods-but this is rediculous!
