I am so sorry to tell the group that today Jade lost her battle and was put to sleep. it appears that she ended up with salmonella it was not know that she had this issue until yestarday she was being treated for a respitory infection at the time. it progressed very quickly when Bethany had the vet out again today she there was no way to save her. Please send your thoughts and prayers to Bethany she is taking it very hard. She also has Ski who is also suffering with this she has not asked but could use help with her ever growing vet bill. If anyone can help the vets phone # is 253-535-3919 Born in QT Apr 28th 2008 Passed on Jan 14th 2009...... RIP Baby Girl

OMG Penny, I am so sorry. Please, tell Bethany how sorry Sally and I are. Bethany's precious heart must be breaking right now. {{{{deep sigh}}}} This is just so much for one person to bear.
I am going to try to call Bethany, but if you get the chance, would you mind recounting a story my oldest son, Sam's, Waldorf teacher told at a birthday? This was the first time I heard about the Rainbow Bridge - and it had to do with life and death. It was a little boy's birthday - his sixth. We were celebrating at the school. Mrs. Ingaborg Schipull, a very German and exceedingly beautiful woman, started to talk about this little boy's baby brother who had recently decided to take the Rainbow Bridge to come to earth and join his family. However, part-way on the journey, he decided it was not yet time to be here, and he turned around and returned from whence he came. The baby had died en utero. (I know - this type of story during newly six-year-old's birthday celebration seems odd - downright wrong. And yet the story was as much about birth as it was about death.) It all makes sense now.
And Baby Jade had the same choice - with the help of those who saved her and gave her the time she needed to be here and do whatever it was she was here to do. Yes - this is airy-fairy, hippy-dippy-trippy Amy Jo talking. But when you think about it, all by yourself, quietly - and you think about Baby Jade - it all makes sense. She is not in pain, she is not suffering, and she did NOT go to slaughter inside her mama. She lived - and died - with dignity.
I am promise you ... she will live again. She will be back. She will return on that Rainbow Bridge and return to Bethany. I just know it.
Please give Bethany my love. And Penny, I love you, too. I didn't get to spend much time with you at the camp-out, but it was enough to know you are both very good people with huge hearts.

Oh no. It is so hard to lose ANY of them, but seems especially hard when it's a baby. Seems like they didn't really get much of a chance. But, TD, you are right - she DID get to be born and experience life and the love of her horse mom and her humans. And that is a gift.
RIP sweet baby.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of Jade.
I think I read recently about toxins which form in hay that has been rolled and wrapped. I can not remember if it was salmonella, but I think it was. It can grow without oxygen, and has killed several horses. I do not know if this is the type of feed she was feeding, but anyone who feeds this should investigate.

SO SORRY, Penny-I know how deeply you care for all the horses that you come in contact with-what a loss. I have never heard of this before-can you share what the vet said-how is it contracted?, diagnosed? what are the signs? How is it treated? And apparently it is contaigous as her other one has it too? Please share whatever information you have on the subject so we can all learn from this horrible loss. Thanks Lisa

Hugs. It's always hard to lose any of them especially when battling to save them. But, we just never know the time line we have all been given for life here. Love the story about the Rainbow Bridge. What a wonderful gift the German school teacher gave that day.

I had never heard of a horse getting samonella before either. Sky actually appeared to be sick first and was on medication and separated from Jade after she appeared sick. The vet is unsure about where it came from. It could have been tracked in from somewhere else. The vets say to sterilize all equipment and boots after cleaning stall no contact with other horses with same clothes Much like strangles it can spread to other horses. She was feeding Grass and alfalfa as well as mash to these two. The vet put Sky on specific diahrea meds antibiotics, banimine and probios. Jade was treated a day later by another vet same office and was treated for respitory infection Saturday as she had no diahrea it didn't look like she had the same issue however by monday she was crashing and had to be put down as she could not stand up eat or drink. She tried very hard to stand up for Bethany when she as talking to her but went back down.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that......I'm sure Jade is kicking up her heels in pasture across the bridge right now, playing with other babies who had to cross early as well....she'll be there waiting for everyone that loved her when they cross to claim their beloved animals someday....

This is so sad. Do they have any clues as to how they contracted the salmonella?

there is an immunization for salmonella... I hope they are suggesting that for the others... and anyone who lives in that area... so sad, it is in dirt, and even people get it from food and even babies get it who are breast fed.... very very sad indeed to lose two in two weeks.

I'm so sorry to hear that both were lost- Bethany's heart must be breaking. But they went in the 'right' way, surrounded by love, not jammed in a trailer across the border.
