Well, I saw a sign at the feed store that read, 2 QH mares, $1000, then crossed off and it read FREE. The guy that worked at the feed store said the guy is having problems, lost his job, wife, etc and can't afford to feed them anymore. Also, he told me that animal control has already been called. So, I called and went over there this morning-it's only a few minutes from my house. Unfortunately it was exactly what I had expected... very very skinny horses in barbed wire with bad teeth and feet. Of course and one might be bred by her half brother. It's a pretty sad situation. So this is what there is: 27 year old grey QH mare-ribs-backbone showing, he told me she was very broke, needs teeth floated-no papers-free 16 year old chestnut QH/possibly paint mare with blaze, only halterbroke, may be bred, needs hoof care, no papers-free. She was very sweet, she let me pet and scratch her and he comments"oh fine you let her touch you but not me!" 18 year old dark bay stud, very skinny, broke, lost papers, looks pretty bad. Wants $500
I didn't give him any lectures. He does seem to care about these horses, just doesn't have any money-says they are his brothers horses, but who knows. These horses need food bad! He also doesn't want them to go to slaughter.
I don't know if I can fit any more horses on my property-we just moved and built just what we needed.
Can anyone help? This is in the Yreka, CA area, 14 miles below the Oregon border. The town is called Montague, CA.
I don't have a trailer, but might be able to borrow one and keep the horses here for a bit. I don't have any stallion facilities right now though-of course he needs to be gelded!

For right now I'm just going to pick him up some bales and drop them off. They are $14 each for nice grass hay at the closest feed store. If anyone wants to help out, I'll make sure it gets spent on hay for them. That chestnut mare was so sweet-I'll have a hard time not bringing her home, but maybe he could just use some help to get through this. paypal addy:

I'll post if anyone helps, and keep receipts for hay Thank you.

I would like to help out, but do not have much extra cash at the moment. I'll send enough for one bale of hay for now. I'll try to keep helping for as long as is necessary to keep these babies fed. I'm so glad they have you looking out for them!!!! Hugs.

Any luck on finding them a home? Is he open to letting one of us screen potential adopters (i.e. reference checks?) I can send you the questionnaire that Caryn created and that we both updated when volunteering....it's pretty thorough. I'll make an exception and find the time to help screen if needed. Also - is he aware of the KB's and their tactics, not to take to auction, etc?
A new home would be great. Where's that winning lotto ticket........

Oh, those poor sweet babies!!! Thanks so much for helping them. I think that Katie/watermarkfarm has a website to advertise horses in need of help. You might want to PM her. Sorry, I don't have the link handy, but I'm pretty sure it's somewhere on here....
I hope you find them good homes soon. It's a bit far from me, so not really sure where to advertise for potential homes. I know most rescues are overflowing, but maybe there is one in your neck of the woods that could help. Sounds like these kids have spent their whole lives together. It's a shame, but I'm sure they will need to be separated. There just aren't a lot of people able to to take in 3 horses right now...
Oh well, first things first. Thank so much for getting these kids the food they need!!!

I will donate 2 - 20 pound buckets of probiotic/weight gain mix for these guys to anyone on here that can take these two. Those normally go for $160 each - but these guys need it. Please - someone - take these horses in. 3 months, good feed and some vet care and you will have very pretty, very adoptable horses.
Also - If anyone can donate hay - since right now they aren ot getting anything - go for an alfalfa/grass mix if possible. they need the calories badly.

When I went back to take the pictures I just put some hay in for each horse, so I know they ate yesterday and he's got 3 bales now for them. I also bought some 14% grain,. Sara, when can I start giving them that? I wasn't sure if it'd be too hard on thier systems to introduce grain when they are that thin.
I don't think any of them are sick. I know that he wants them gone as soon as possible. He mentioned to me that alot of people around here are just letting their horses go in the hills because they can't feed them. That's probably what happened with the wild horses behind my house.
Thank you for that offer, Sara, that is very generous. Look at all their pretty faces, they will look great once they get some food and care.

Sara,
You are right, these guys just need homes. I don't think he is too particular about where they go, as long as he doesn't have to care or feed them anymore.
When I first pulled up and saw those mares leaning on that barbed wire just longing for something to eat..it broke my heart. This guys place is the type of place you wouldn't dare go inside to use the bathroom. In fact, even though I'm a skilled martial artist, he is so creepy I wouldn't want to be alone with him. These horses need to be picked up. The stallion is in a 10x10 wooden pen. They don't have any shelter. He told me he does the boys feet twice a year and never does the girls feet. He does have another stallion he is not willing to get rid of.
The stories he has told me about the horses. One collapsed in the middle of the parade...well, yeah, when they're starving...oh I won't even get into that one.
Anyhow, this county only allows for one horse per acre. I have 6 on 5 acres, so it's really not feasible for me to take even one of them on.
I'm going to swing by tomorrow and make sure that the hay is being fed.

No grain - not for at least 14 days of solid, regular, daily feeding. THEN - introducing them to only whole oats initially or alfalfa pellets mixed with whole oats. THEN - they can have about 1/2 pound each a day to start - no more. They have been off feed for a while and need some care it looks like. So - free choice hay and lots of it to start - prefer a good grass/alfalfa mix or high quality grass. THEN, start slowly with the rest. If you throw too much too soon they can get colic or have other issues. Once someone has them at home there aer a few other things you can do fairly soon - but without having them at home where you can have full care and keep an eye on them I am not going to suggest anything other than some hay pellets and hay. If you go back over, you can give them hay pellets- some alfalfa pellets are fine as long as none of them scarf the food - they can choke if they are not soaked if they try to inhale the food too fast.
Can I make the suggestion that you contact Pasado's safe haven up here in washington. Explain the situation about food and that animal control has not been helpful. See if they can recommend an organization down there that might be able to step in or that might be able to take the horses asap.
Have you posted this to the SAFE board?

Horses are gaining a little weight. just a little. That grass hay does not have much to it. I gave him some grass/alfalfa, but I'm thinking it might be time for straight aflalfa...and they just raised it to $19 a bale!!! The horses still need homes.

You can supplement with alfalfa pellets to help with the cost difference a little. Put them on top of the grass hay and let the horses pick them out. Try to get the sterret brothers/mid valley milling since they are a little softer than other brands.
Hope someone can take them home soon.

I ran into the owner of these horses today in Wal-Mart. They all still need a home. I haven't been by there in awhile, so I should probably go and see how they've been handling this cold weather. He doesn't seem to think the chestnut mare is pregnant, but he did say that she and the stud colt keep breaking out of thier fences. Does anyone want these horses?
I've been busy helping other horses, but it's time these poor guys got a new home. Thank you for helping out with some of their feed.

Yes it's been a few months since I've driven over there. My husband was coaching the guys daughter, and she'd report that the horses are fine. I've been busy with my 3 kids and 7 horses and helping alot of needy horses in the area. I helped find 2 free tbred mares a good home. I drove in the snow(first time ever) 6 miles for 10 days and cared for that weaving unbroke twh stallion while his owner went off to vegas, and he didn't pay me a dime for my time. and assisted a few others on feeding and training. This town is a train wreck for horses. I drive by and see young horses in with crazy sharp machinery, a 3yr old filly back in with her sire, there are alot of ignorant people in this small town. Anyhow, back to these guys. I will drive out today and see how they are doing(it's actually about 20 miles from here). My hauler is coming out mid feb to pick up a pony I sold...so if someone in the bay area wants these guys, let me know.

Icehorse- I left you a message, I could take the horses, but can't pay for the stallion, or transport. I would need to know if the mares are pregnant, i assume the can go together, the stud would need to be separate obviously. I cannot come up there for time restraints, and can not haul 3 horses, I do have a 2 horse but right now time is the problem. I do have hay, but if anyone can offer transport and help with supplements to get them healthy it would help. You mentioned a stud colt.... is that a 4th horse?

I'm headed over there right now to check on them. I'll see what I can negotiate-At this point he probably wants them all gone for free. Like I mentioned in the pm, my hauler (Blew by U) is coming up here around Feb 10 and going to Gilroy...so that would be a great time to hitch a ride.

Possible home offer with Gypsyrn if funds can be raised for transport! My shipper usually charges around $300 per horse to go from here to the bay area...still waiting for a quote and see if she'll give a discount for rescues.

Thank you! That is awesome! I just heard back from the haulers and she said they'd take $100 off each one since they are rescues! That means $200 a piece...
So we need $350 to get them to safety! Yea!

Sorry, I haven't checked in on this thread for a while. I can help out with $20 for transport fees. I'll PM icehorse. So, I think that we are down to $330 needed. How long do we have to raise the fees? Also, can someone with permissions, move this to the general board or make it an announcement for more exposure?
