This is Buddy, (name ideas would be great) He was at the local SPCA. Just like my other dog Koda, who is now One. Buddy, was adopted as a puppy by a mom for her little boy, she got bored with him and threw him out. He was then picked up as a stray. We are working on his basic obedience right now and trying to get him to stop pooping on the deck Breed guesses? I think shepherd/terverun

aww cute! what a sweet thing to do. I think he looks shepard/chow chow (the black spots on tounge, neck fluff, and curled tail). I have a shepard/chow/retreiver mix.

I was told that there are several dogs who can have the purple tongue spots, as I originally thought Chow too. I have googled chow/shepherd mixes, I can't find any that look like him.

He is cute emjay, he reminds me of my BF's dog Cosmo we had to put down 2 years ago. She was a shephard/chow mix. The name "Nanook" comes to mind when I look at him, don't know why.

He is the exact image of my moms dog and he is a sheppard/lab mix. Awesome dog, very intense breed. Loves to swim. Whatever the exact breeding is they are smart. You are very lucky to have him, congratulations. My moms dog's name is Kodi, and he is a very pampered pooch in Arizona. Have fun with him.

We had a shepard, husky, collie mix that looks very much like him. Although I have to agree it looks like there is some chow mixed in. Maybe Shepard, husky, chow mix??
Very cute guy! Congratulations on the addition of a new family member.

thanks all, he is a big ol' bear. I think the tatoo in his ear from when he was adopted as a puppy, part of the adoption process. He had been adopted as a puppy by a lady, but she got bored with him. The tattoo would probably just trace back to her and then the SPCA. He is a special blend too, just like Koda. I have two rescue dogs now, that's it for now.............until we get some land that is, muahahahahah.

Gotta throw my opinion in here! Black spots on the tongue are common in lots of breeds - including newfies - my breed of choice! I was told that all the 'best' dogs have a few black spots on their tongues!
Chows have an almost all purple/black looking tongue - not always, but I don't think they have 'spots'.
Just my two cents worth. He looks like a shepard/akita cross.

What ever he is, he is handsome. I have a purebred-registered shepherd with a black spot on its tongue. The eyes to me say shepherd. I thought of Chow as the mix too but it could be Akita. Although with that heavy coat, I think I would lean more toward Chow. Either way, I know you will be doing alot of vacumning. I know I am. I have a Shepherd and Siberian Huskey. And they are both blowing their undercoats due to the change in season.

just for fun, try guessing all the breeds in Koda, the black little one, haha. He's about ten breeds I say. I can say this too about Buddy, he can't run real fast and he tires quick, haha. And he's not even old, and being a stray y ou'd think he would be in shape.
Part shepherd/couch potatoe. LOL

they tattoo here in BC. I have heard of the micro chip, but I don't think they the shelters do it. they know this dog. But, they never did tell me where the puppy originally came from, Buddy as a puppy. I will ask though. But they didn't know his breeding either, so probably a dumped litter like the majority of the other puppies they get. It's a big big problem out here.

"Back in the day" before microchipping, it was a common practice to tattoo purebred dogs in case of being stolen, etc. Or just if you wanted an ID method, etc. I had my really good Rottweiler female tattooed in the ear with her registration number, as an ID, "just in case". They also used to tattoo inside the hind leg, as some times there was a fear that an ear could be cut off to disguise a tattoo. Off topic, but it has been over 10 years since she died and I still miss that girl! Since then all my dogs have been rescues. This is a Handsome Guy! I bet he is happy to be in a home that appreciates him. When I got out of college, before getting married, I worked for an animal control/humane society, used to bug the heck out of me the reasons people gave ( and still give) for getting rid of pets like they are so disposable! They were not around to see those poor things literally change before my eyes from their original personality to someone looking and wondering why they were left, some became sad, some became depressed, some became anxious, some even protective and non touchable. Broke my heart and made me sooooo mad at people for being so callous. Did everything i could to get them adopted into good homes or at the very least, treated well from me while they were there. It is even worse now I bet and makes me sick. All of you people who adopt a shelter or rescue animal are my heroes!

it's true halfwayhome, the problem is so bad now for the so called 'disposable' dogs. I read craigslist, kijiji, look at the shelters. Sadly, many excuses for getting rid of their pets, well, are just plainly excuses, some of which they shouldn't have used. In the shelters, many of the dogs are from places where spaying and neutering isn't done and the dogs run rampant. Koda was thrown in the garbage dump and Buddy was thrown out of the house. I don't get it. But.......they have a warm , safe home now. Buddy was even allowed on my bed this morning, I caught my hubby bonding. I guess you could say that's a really good sign when the hubby lets the dogs on the bed. haha.
even our cat has a tattoo in the ear. The option to mircrochip is here, but, not mandatory, as of yet.

You might be surprized In Canada, all pure bred dogs must be tattoo'd in order to be registered - a couple of my newfs came from a breeder in Canada and they have tattoos................ Personally, I think microchipping is safer - stolen dogs can have ears cut off to remove evidence. WendyP/Bend, OR

I have a newf that has a grade 4/5 heart murmur, and she tires easily, and never runs fast. She is now 9.5 years old - which for a healthy newf is old, much less one with a severe SAS murmur. There isn't really anything you can do about a murmur, except not let him overdo it, and watch any meds that might cause the heart to overwork............... Hope he is *just* a slow poke! thanks for the heads up wendyp, I haven't officially adopted him yet, he's still classified as a 'foster', we wanted to make sure he would be a good fit, and of course, how could we send him back, we wuff him already. haha. Once the adoption papers are a done deal we get the first vet checkup for free, so I will mention my concerns to the vet and hopefully he'll be extra thorough.

Don't you just love those rescues??? Breed could be anything. But, it's the eyes. . .and. . .the personality. . .and. . .the trust they give you. They bond tightly to their "new" people.

he's bonded alright, he's my shadow in the house, I can't go anywhere without him following me, now if I could only get him to come to me when called. he hasn't had a whole lot in the means of obedience training, but we are working on it. he definitely is personality plus.
