Wild Horse Pix

Finally, the small wild herd of horses that come through our property every night, came out at dusk and I had my camera with me! These pics were taken this evening at the campground next door. I drove right up next to them and took pics. These are the horses that were let loose about 13 years ago into the wild herd. Since I moved here, the herd is down to 7 horses. 1 black stallion, 1 sorrel stallion and 3 sorrel mares, and 2 yearlings. The beautiful little black filly and her bay momma are gone:( The bay mom is the one that came up to me when I was in my truck...maybe word got around and someone captured them...or...there are bears and mountain lions on our property:( But it is still amazing to see these guys everyday, and this time so close. It freaks me out when I see them in my yard, because my horses are the same colors and I'm always thinking one has gotten loose! I still haven't ventured too far away from our property...Do you think I have anything to worry about if I'm out riding and I come across these guys??

Are those wild horses protected in your area?

I don't know. I don't think BLM is controlling them at all. In fact, I don't think people really know or care about them. Different ranchers around here all claim that they are theirs (depending on whose ranch they are on that day). One of the locals said they used to round a couple up every year and sell them to slaughter. A couple of them have been hit by cars. They come through my property every night and sometimes I put a little hay out for them. They stop and drink at the spring near my horses pasture. One day while I was training a couple of my horses, the sorrel stallion came by at watched at the fence. So I worked him a little bit too(I stayed on my side of the fence) and he understood and licked and chewed. He looked to be about a year and a half then. Of course the day the bay mare came over and nuzzled my hand was amazing. I sure enjoy my encounters with these guys. I've heard the black stallion is dangerous though and killed a horse, so I stay away from him. He sure is beautiful though...you should see them move!
