LOL - okay, Sara "outted" me! First - thanks for the birthday wishes!! Okay, so, Kaleigh tried to poke her eye out a couple weeks ago. So, out comes the vet on an emergency call. The eye was intact - the whatever-it-was poked through her lower eyelid right where I used to put eyeliner on me when I had time/money for such things. But, it angled down and missed the eye. Yay. But, soaking, antibiotics, blah, blah....$345 And this was after vaccinations, requiring special treatment for Angel who has reacted to some in the past....$490. Yes, for vaccinating. So a week ago Princess Self-Destruct turns up lame. Heat in foot. Heat up leg. <insert bad word here>. Call to vet. Vet says "give bute, soak, pack and boot. I'll be out in morning." Problem. It is Sunday at 5:05pm. I have no boot. I have bute, but no stuff to pack it. And horse stores are now closed. Wander over to other side of ranch looking for Jenm to mooch stuff. No jenm. Go home to get duct tape, buy diapers, get bucket, hot water thermos (no hot water at ranch) and epsom salt gel. Decide NOT to give bute cause if it's an abscess I WANT it to hurry up and finish "cooking" and it it's soft tissue, I want her to be uncomfortable enough to not run around and make it worse. It is going to be windy and raining that night (already is) so I don't want to keep her in the holding-cell paddock by herself while the rest of the herd is under the trees 5 acres away, although I did leave her there while I went home, with Angel in the other one to give her someone to bite keep her quiet while she's waiting for me to come back. Come back, take her out, tie her, pour hot water in bucket and get ready to put her back foot in the bucket. She objects. Strenuously. I soothingly remind her "sweetie, you used to be a <insert bad word> race horse and you have had your feet soaked more times that either you or I can count. Stand the <insert bad word> STILL!" She didn't. And in all the dancing and parrying, I tripped over my own feet and landed face down in the mud. Er, muck. (there is a distinction, as every horse person knows). Lovely. So, I pick myself and contemplate the situation. I am standing, head down in the danger zone of a KNOWN kicker, all by myself, with no cross-ties, in the pitch dark, wind, and rain. In a considerably less soothing tone I tell her, "If you can give me this much fight then you can <insert bad word> wait until morning!!" I did leave both of them locked up for the night. Next morning I decided it was soft tissue - she was very willing to walk and even trot (to get away from me) but not stand on it, and she was completely unwilling to step back on it. As someone who has a fair amount of personal experience with soft-tissue injuries in humans (don't ask) that added up better than an abscess...although she could be cooking an abscess too. So, I called the vet and he came out. I kept my opinions to myself, but turns out that's what he thinks it is too. So a week of Banamine and re-evaluate. I haven't seen that bill yet. And we'll talk about having to do a creek crossing in the middle of the night another time.
