I was just wondering today if there is any logic in the order in which a horse herd runs. For example... when my horses run as a herd they all run in the same order almost all the time. Does their rank in the herd have any indication on what position they take when the herd runs? Or is it simply about speed? - Tarkh in the lead, an 8 year old gelding.
- Neon is next, a 3 year old mare... she and Tarkh sometimes switch positions for first and second.
- Casper is third and a 18-20 year old gelding.
- Axel brings up the rear and is a teenage mare.
Is there order in the chaos?

There are probably studies that explain the order of the herd, but I would say the most dominant horse is probably last. They would keep the less dominant ones in front of them because then they could control the herd. I would then say the second in charge would be at the front of the herd. And the rest would be in the middle.
So what is the pecking order of your horses? Axel Tarkh Neon Casper
If there were a stallion in the herd, he would replace Axel as the herder and she would go to the front as the leader. This is just my opinion of course. Based on watching my own horses for 40 some years.
