Hi everyone,
I wanted to let you all know that SAFER (Sonoma Action for Equine Rescue - http://www.saferhorse.com) is preparing to attend the June 14th auction in Roseville, CA alongside NorCal Equine with the hope of outbidding the KB's on up to 4 horses. We need funds for the purchase price, but already have transportation, "housing" (for the horses!) and hay ready to go. We have not only many foster homes all lined up and ready to go, but actually several potential adopters who have asked us to look out for particular types of riding horses for them. We simply need cash in hand for purchase prices.
I realize that times are tight and that many of us are feeling the pinch, but if you find you have even a few dollars, and the inclination, we would really appreciate your contribution. SAFER is now a registered 501c3 so your donations are deductible! We just placed Melody today, one of our first auction rescues, in a wonderful forever home where she will be a companion to an older blind gelding ... she is in heaven! Jesse (rescued at the same auction as Melody) is currently in foster care, awaiting a date to go to UC Davis for a biopsy and possible surgery. If Jesse can be treated successfully he has a home waiting at the Sonoma County Humane Society's "Forget Me Not Farm" where he will be an equine docent for school children to come learn about animals.
So ... we have room to help more horses, means to provide for them, and even potential homes lined up. If you would like to help us bring home a deserving animal from the Roseville auction (which IS frequented by the KB's) please go to our website and use the Paypal button, or you can certainly send a check by snailmail if you prefer.
Thanks in advance for thinking of us ... and even if you can't contribute financially please pass the word that SAFER is active and helping horses in need in Sonoma County, California.

Thank you so much, sundancer ... you are such an angel! If we are able to get any horses at the auction we will be posting them here in addition to our website.
Please remember to let your friends know about SAFER; we are still working on getting the word out that we are here to help horses in need; we want to be a resource for our community to turn to for help in placing horses before things get too bad, in addition to rescuing from the auction. We have the approval of our local Humane Society, and are partnering with other local rescues to increase our network and efficacy.

Hi All, I just wanted to let you all know the information about our 501c3 as it was pointed out to me that we don't show up on the IRS's search page yet. Apparently it takes up to 6 months ( )to show up on the search list with the IRS, but in the meantime here is the info on our status, so that no one needs to doubt our credibility: Our letter from the IRS is dated May 8th 2009, and certifies us as a 501c3 back to our incorporation date of 10/20/08. The letter is signed by Robert Choi, Director of Exempt Organizations. The "Rulings and Agreements Letter" number is 947; our EIN is 26-359-3812. Contact Person is Benjamin L Davis ID 31465 at 877 829 5500. Thanks! Modified to correct a typo in the EIN.

Hi Folks: This is afinenettle (Kate Sullivan) and old poster who started up SAFER to do local work in horse rescue here in Sonoma County. Thank you to tashgaia for pointing out we were not listed on the website that verifies our 501c3 status. I assumed it would be fairly immediate. Now I find out, after calling the IRS, that it can take as long to get listed there as it did to apply! So my webmistress will be scanning the approval letter and posting a link on our home page at www.saferhorse.com within 24 hours. For some feel good stories about adoptions here in Sonoma County - go to saferhorse.com/adopted.htm . Thanks for all you great work all are doing. Kate Sullivan SAFER 707-824-9543 info@saferhorse.com

We are going to the Roseville Auction on Sunday to meet up with Tawnee of NorCal Equine Rescue. I am really looking forward to learning from her extensive experience. I have been rescuing out of the Petaluma auction but its very small. Tawnee has spoken with me about helping out at the Petaluma auction as well.
We have raised enough money and have transport for FIVE HORSES !! I have 2 volunteers driving a 2 horse and a 3 horse. If we get any more they may have to ride in the car!!
Thank you to Cheryl from this board who took the leap and bought herself a stake in these guys!
I will post the pics when I get back. Wish us luck. Afinenettle

Thank you to Cheryl from this board who took the leap and bought herself a stake in these guys! Yes, that would be Sundancer, already horse-mom to FIVE rescue horses, and soon to be number six (good luck letting hubby know about that one, dear Cheryl!!!). Thank you so much, Sundancer/Cheryl. You are not only my good friend but a true friend to the horse in need. Some of you may not know that Cheryl/Sundancer is the "Mrs. Dean" often mentioned on Joe Shelton's blog. She and her third grade class collect cans and bottles to redeem for cash which they donate to Joe of TBFriends! Cheryl, you are an angel and SAFER and I thank you again and again. Hope

Hi, I was still on vacation on Sunday, and Kate spent yesterday driving our rescue Jesse down to Salinas for his surgery (donated by a wonderful vet there) so I haven't heard from her yet what the results of the auction were. As soon as I get word I'll let you know! They were going up with trailer space for 5 horses, so I hope we'll hear some great news.
Thanks for asking!

Yes, 2 Qh's, 1 TB, 1 arab and a donkey. Donkey is already placed. I am headed out in the morning to do an eval. on them. Kate said they were all ridden at the auction and seem to be in reasonable condition. Will get tons of pics. Love pics.

We got four horses; here is a 16 year old TB gelding with his papers. Body sore, needing foot care and some good nutrition, chiropractic and rest; but overall a nice very broke horse. He's the herd leader, but is easy to handle. Michelle at Harvest Moon Ranch speculates that at least 3 of these guys probably came from a dude ranch string. Getting on the Right Bus can make a world of difference... Young chestnut mare;Appendix or TB probably 8-10 Fresh clean cool water; can this really be true?? 3 days later....more relaxed.. Mare 12-15, 3 white socks, very sweet and easy to handle; may be a good kids horse. Very sweet Arab, part Arab 8-12. Needs chiro and hoof care. Very socialized to people and a staunch protector of the little donkey.
