OK, this will be long winded + typos, sorry 1. Let's say I want to go 501& I am in CA. 2. I have 5 X-CBER horses & want to expand 3. I board at a ranch, the ranch owner & manger have no problems with this, except they don't own the land. 4. The land is owned by POST soon to be GGNR, will that be an issue? If so, does anyone know who I should talk to about it? 5. What if I am NOT about rehab & rehome, but a place where a horses who is to old or has issues, will stay on for life with me. Is that an issue for 501's? I need help with this, I don't know who to go to but all of you, some of which know me well & I know not a 1 of you will steer me wrong. This is an open discussion, all info & input is welcome.

You can set your mission as a 501c3 as broadly or as narrowly as you choose within approved activities. Animal welfare is approved activity. It doesn't matter if you are doing rescue/rehome or sanctuary. I recommend making your purpose broad: "To provide rescue, adoption, and life care for neglected, abused or otherwise unwanted horses" or something like that. You don't need to own the land. Board fees will be an acceptable expense per the IRS - donors may object or approve depending on how much you are paying, etc.
We can talk more if you like - I've had a rough day, so not tonight, if that's okay. pm me your phone number and I'll give you a call and we can figure out a time to talk.
Good for you for thinking about this - the need is endless.....

Amy, thank you for starting this, I have been toying with the idea, but wasn't sure about if I would qualify. Having rescued a fair share, and having some still here unexpectedly, it would definitely help. I'm in Cali as well, would you mind sharing the info with me? Either here or PM? Thank you
