Hi does anyone have any info on a med that can be used to stop or get rid if proud flesh? The sore is healing well but with a small amount of proud flesh. Thanks Joan

I don't have the info myself, but I know for sure that pnp4kidz (may be misspelling her screen name!) has posted before about her magic recipe. She's had a lot of experience with it in some of her rescues! I know she's on her way up to Tireddog's for the camping trip, so she may be off line for a while, but you could PM her just in case she doesn't see this thread.

I don't know how old the injury is or how serious but here is my experience. I had a horse with a serious leg injury, deep cut across the pastern joint- we fought the prouds flesh throughout his recovery. We used "proudsoff" for the initial period alternating with Nitrofurazone. Make sure it is only on the area with the prouds flesh, it will take off the healthy tissue/hair if applied there and only apply a thin layer. It can be hard to clean off at dressing changes but you should be working hard to get the prouds flesh off, it bleeds like crazy. With our guy he injured it late June and was not healed until Feb. Was just our luck, he opened it up a second time (December) when he slipped on wet ground. The second time we tried using his own serum(drew blood and spun it down to separate the serum from the cells-was cool) We only used 1cc on it daily and he healed in a matter of weeks. the serum deterred the prouds flesh. total healing time, about 7+ months.... Today, no prounds flesh scar and he is sound.... Injury-late june 08 - Injury healed feb 09 pic is from august- warning****graphic photo added farm3.static.flickr.com/2642/3706567630_73d9df99e3.jpg

Hello, have doctored many wounds both for myself and for vets, lots of different ways that will work but one of the easiest and newest products for this is called Equaide. GREAT stuff not only stops or gets rid of proudflesh w/o pain or caustic side effects, but acts a healing agent also. I am currently doctoring a VERY ugly and serious wound and it is working great. You can see their website and order direct at: www.equaide.com check out the personal stories and pictures, etc etc. It even does some good on old long standing wound scarring or proudflesh, etc.

I used equaide at Heidi's recommendation on Manny and it worked great (once I got a system worked out!).
What I did was paint it on, leave it for 24 hours, then scrub it off. Fortunately the proud flesh has no nerves (but lots of blood!) so it doesn't hurt.
Be careful with the edges of the wound, as the baby skin cells are easily damaged. They need to "crawl" across the wound to close it up, so the more you damage them the slower the wound closes.
Beth's recipe includes meat tenderizer - I was too scared to try that!

Yes and the nice thing about Equaide is, is that you can get it on normal skin or tissue and it will not damage or hurt it, it is not caustic. I had to use it under a bandage for over a month and the wound is healing well enough now to not bandage, just clean and apply new Equaide every day.

Thanks all I'll look at the web and buy some, Donna gave me some proud off? that was from our vet but it seems a little scary to use . We lost Suki last month on the 3rd after he bit Royal, he had done this before at after that they where always away from each other. General, Royal and Raina where out together. Tiffany in her pad and Suki cber (stempy) my sons 4h horse in his pad. Royal had been having problems with flys and fly spray so he was in a fly sheet. When we got home @ 3 pm Royal was at the gate so I thought they where out of water, but I alway check them for more food etc, thats when I saw Suki in there also. Royal needed @ 8 stitches and Suki had broken his tooth in half and some of his jaw. The vet felt he would need oral surg and a lot of post/op and at @ 27 yrs old it could be risky so it was with a heavy heart that we let him go. He was able to have all those that loved him say goodbye and many hugs, kisses and cookies. We can say he went fighting. In all I miss that boy so very much, he was so very good to my son ,when he could have pushed him around as my son was so new to the riding stuff, Suki was a sweet grumpy old man. In all the photos we have of them at shows Suki looks so happy. Eyes bright and ears forward ready to show off his stuff. I miss him and all his spots....

Prouds off is a great product and actually works in 24hours if done right. if the area you are trying to deal wth is small, then use a q-tip to apply and glob it on. THEN, cover the area with a gauze pad and wrap with gauze and top with vetwrap securely enough that it won't slide/move. leave on over night. Rinse and wash the area the following day. If it is a small area a single application should take the proud flesh off. Once the areais removed, it s important to keep the wound healing correctly. There area variety of ointments on the market but I like the collegen based EMT ointment. globe it on, then keep a pressure wrap on the wound for 2-4 days. manytimes a simple wet dressing done with a pressure wrap will keep the wound healing no problem Sara

thanks for the info, I cant wrap due to the bite is at the top of his left hip, it looks good for being a month. There is only @ a dime size that needs to be treated. Im cleaning with nova soap ans then alcohol wipe down. All in all he should be fine, maybe some chiro before I ride him. He is such a sweet boy , just back from the barn and my shirt is full of licks from him.
