HORSE TRADERS! ADOPTERS BEWARE!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply to: see below Date: 2007-01-29, 8:34AM PST
Hello horse community! I run an equestrian center in Oregon City. Several of my boarders were looking at horses and have had questionable experiences with Harmony and Patti out of WA. They purchase/adopt horses from people who cannot handle them or just want a great home for them with big promises of rehabilitating and finding homes etc. All they care about is making $! They will sell any horse to any buyer! Right now they have a red dun on CL that was practically given to them and now they want 4 digits for a mare with less than 30 days training and no registration. They will tell the inexperienced that all she needs is a "little work" and she'll be perfect for your 4Her! YOUR CHILDREN WILL GET HURT and they don't care!!!! Please Please Please take some one with you with horse knowledge and experience before buying anything from these cold blooded traders!!! They are NOT honest people. I posed as total green horn and went to look at a couple of animals they had. They were all set to put me up on a horse with no helmet, in tennis shoes, and no lead line and turn me loose on a known bucker! This has to stop before someone gets really hurt or worse. Thanks for reading.

This has been going on for a long time.
I used to post on CL Bay Area, and it was very successful, but there's no point now. These people come out of the woodwork and trash us. There is no good way to reply.
I think that we need to remind people not to post on CL - most of you wouldn't know that.
They do this over on the COTH board as well.
Now that this has started up again, we need to flag them as soon as they appear.
Please don't get in to it with them. It will only fan the flames. These people have been at it for a long time and they are tireless and, I might add, some of them are crazy.

This is directed at someone on this board? I havent seen any horses really for four digits. It's a typical CBER-trashing post that appeared on CL. It's not directed to us, it's directed to people who visit CL. CL is poison. Those of us who posted there in the past, no longer post there. Expect more of this in the next few days.

Are we sure this is directed at CBER? They mention the names Harmony and Patti...I don't know anyone with CBER named Harmony or Patti...can someone inform us please?
We know that CBER is a catalyst for the crazy people, so keep your ads about rescue general...there are many other rescues out there that we can promote, and then CBER can be added as we move along...

I am not sure, but I think the original post was in reference to a mother, daughter outfit in Ridgefield. I have never met them, nor do I know their names....but under the category of if it sounds too good to be true.....
This mother/daughter team are always posting on Portland's CL that they are looking to take in any and all horses needing a new home. They promise to rehabilitate and rehome if you have a problem horse or just offer a permanent home if that is what is needed. I have always thought their ad sounds a little good to be true. So without any better info that than I am putting in my 2 cents and making the leap that the CL post quoted above refers to them.....

Thank you, velvetcup...those names do sound familiar to me too but I can't remember exactly why...I really don't think this particular ad is against CBER (in my opinion) but "rescue" on craigslist seems to galvanize everybody, no matter what the content of the message is!

I agree with cybercat. I don't think this is about any 'rescue' group, but about the people mentioned in particular. There are many horse brokers out there that don't visit rescue facilities, more like auctions and private sellers. I know at the auction you see the same buyers over and over. They buy a horse then turn around and resale it a few months later hoping to make a profit. The horse may or may not be better than it was.

I agree cybercat, rescue is a "hot" topic on CL these days. Maybe, I am reading the post wrong, butI don't think the CL poster is against rescue, but rather trying to warn others that an unscruplous horse dealer is posing as a rescuer. LOL, honestly, I really haven't met any of the folks involved so it is purely conjection on my part, but my gut tells me the poster is on to something. See what happens when I get too much time on my hands. I should probably go muck my stalls and be productive instead of reading between the lines of CL posts. Nothing but trouble down that path. LOL

I have also been warned about Harmony - outside of this group or CL. People who have had dealings with her independently. (Although that's still hearsay) I have also linked her to some pretty unsavory characters around Jefferson/Scio/Corvallis - people I have rescued horses from in the past. (People well known by animal control in Linn/Benton Co.) None of them were associated with CBER though. At least I didn't think - but not that I would really know because until now - I never dealt with CBER either.
If nothing else, it's another reason to be very very careful about who people donate horses too....
Hate to say it..but I trust no one anymore.

Isn't it sad that if you put rules on people they find a way to make it worse than it was before the rules were set into place? Funny how now that you can't sell an animal on CL people have decided to look like a "rescue", disguising themselves behind the honorability of the word like it's enough to make you believe the person is honest.
all I have to say is GRR

You may be right that this particular post was not about CBER, but plenty of them have been. One particularly nasty spate of them cost Barrista an adopter and she was shipped. I really don't think we should post there at all. IMO, we should stick with moderated boards like BAEN and all the "sister" boards.
