A couple of horses at my Barn have this......tonight was the first time I saw it. My neighbour was washing her horses legs........I asked why. She pointed it out- said another horse has had it off and on for months.......we have 12 x 36 stable & paddock set-up.- dry. When I felt it, it felt like hard pebbles- about 1/8-1/4inch diameter, in 1-2 inch patches from knees/hocks to fetlocks. The other owner told her it was a fungus....due to urine splashes????Has anyone had experience with this?? My horse does not have it.

Can you post a picture??? I would try wetting the legs, massage Malaseb shampoo on them and let it set for 10 minutes then rinse....do this several times a week, it should clear it up!!

Flora got "scratches" on her pasterns from the gaiters on her hoof boots. She got these big scabby bumps that might fit your description. It's sort of like rainrot on their legs. If you keep their legs clean and wash with an antimicrobial shampoo they'll clear up.

I have one gelding who has like eczema on the fronts of his hind leg cannon bones, it is more waxy thick stuff, with hair growing thru... and they say it's from urine splashes... but I don't know. His seems to get better with hydrocortisone but honestly it doesn't bother him unless I scratch it to try to clean it, and then it bleeds... so I leave it alone.

it sounds like mud fever but with dry paddocks that doesn't make sense.

I agree with Beth, a good cortisone cream along with the Malaseb should definitely do the trick!

Thanks. I'll pass that info along to the owner.
