Help with horses in Sonoma County

This is a friend of a friend issue.

A young couple was given 2 neglected horses by some sketchy dude. I don't think the couple knows much about horses and contacted my friend for help. I'm not sure what town they are in, but can get more info.

The horses are a mare and her colt. The colt is 9 months old (may already be breeding dam). He is 1/2 andalusian.

I have no info on the mare other than there is something wrong with her withers/back and probably is not rideable.

The dude who gave them the horses offered to take the horses back. They called dude, who said he would take them back, and he and did not ask any questions.

After talking to my friend and learning about slaughter, they are now pretty suspicious the guy just wanted them to fatten up the horses for him so he can take to auction/slaughter.

Can anyone recommend someone to contact to help these horses out? It sounds like if they can't find someone to take the horses they will have to give back to dude. Colt needs to be gelded, etc. Any ideas?

If anyone has questions I can try to get more specific info.
