We have a new member on our board. Welcome pamcopas!
Pam needed to place a horse that needed our help. Here is her story:
Urgently looking for a new home for Copper, my Arab/Quarter cross gelding. He’s 23 years young, 15 hands, gentle disposition, no arthritis, fine for semi-experienced beginners.
I’ve been very ill and though I’m recovering, it’s been slow. My medical expenses are incredible, and I just can’t continue to care for Copper as he deserves. My sister has had to move her horse to our property this summer, and Copper is struggling with stress due to his new, very active 3 year old pasture-mate. He typically loses a little weight over the winter, but has always regained it over the summer. Not so this year. We’ve wormed him twice, and he’s been fed Allegra Sr. plus local grass and Orchard hay, but he’s not re-gaining his weight. I believe it’s because the mare is chasing him around so much, and he’s stressed out. She’s very pushy, and is constantly running him. The way our pasture’s set up, there’s no easy way to separate them.
Copper gets along with other horses well, as we’ve boarded other horses in the past without problems. I’m sure it’s just this pushy mare that’s getting to him. My sister can’t afford to move her horse, and since it will be some time before I can return to work again, I don’t see any other option but to find Copper a new home with someone who can follow up with proper veterinary care if his weight doesn’t pick up soon. He’s a great horse, very friendly, readily picks up his feet, and really loves to be groomed and ridden (but absolutely shouldn’t be ridden until he’s gained some weight).
Please, no lectures - I am trying to do the right thing by Copper. He’s a good friend and deserves better care than I can now give him. Anyone can have an unexpected, serious illness befall them at any time, and it breaks my heart to be in this position. I will waive the $100 adoption fee for the right family. You will need to transport him, as I don’t have a trailer. Please give this great guy a chance at a new life for the New Year! I will donate whatever grain he has remaining at the time you take him.
FOLLOW UP:
I came down with the worst flu I've ever had over the past few days, and couldn't get to the computer or the barn, anything. I am still recovering from my latest bout with a serious rare disease called Sarcoidoisis and my immune system is not what it used to be.
On Sunday, it got really cold and rainy, so I asked my husband to please lock Copper in the stall overnight. LaKota will stand in the barn, and chase Copper out just far enough he has to stay standing in the rain. I finally got a hands on look at him this morning when I turned him out, and he's in worse shape than I originally thought. Last time I saw him, when I posted the ad on Craig's List, I saw him from the tack room area, but didn't actually go into the barn/stalls with him, & didn't touch him. Lakota is a rescue horse also, and has had no training but what I've given her before my surgery, so she's very wild yet, and not trustworthy - she startles and bolts at the least little thing. As I am unstable and can't move out of the way quickly, I didn't actually enter the stall that day. I had a close call with Lakota about a week ago that badly re-injured my new knee and could've been much worse, which my husband saw happen. After that, he didn't want me going down there alone at all, unless he's there with me. But this morning I determined to go down to feed and turn Copper out of the stall, and I examined him as much as I can. Oh my poor boy! It's breaking my heart! He is nothing but fuzzy skin over bones, and has raging diarreah (sp?). He seems to have no body fat at all! As Lakota has been keeping Copper out of the barn apparently, we haven't been seeing Copper's poo until last night when we kept him in (keeping him in every night now until he's rehomed - it's just too cold for such a skinny horse!). Man, what a mess it was in that stall! Please, is there anyone who can come and look at him? Are there pro-bono vets out there who would examine beloved horses whose owners are suddenly unable to pay? I've wormed him twice, fed him weight gain, regularly feed psylim (sp). He is soooo hungry, he eats every bite we give him. He's been on a steady diet of Allegra Sr. and local grass hay for well over a year, but never lost weight like this before. It's just been running right thru the poor baby. I'm sure Lakota chasing him non-stop between feedings isn't helping him, either. It may have been the stress catalyst that started the gastro problems. I just don't know. All I know is I love him, I'm broke, and he needs more help than I can give him, and I don't want such a good boy to end his life in one of those horrible feedlots!
I didn't know you had to re-post on Craigs' List (it's also my first time posting there) so I will re-do that tomorrow if I can, same with taking some pictures. He's just looks so bad to me, I'm afraid he'll die if he doesn't get out of here soon.
Donna (Toeps), if your offer to come check him out still stands, call me please. I'll email you my home phone number. I'll be out taking my granddaughter to school in Vancouver in the morning but should be back by 11 am at latest. My daughter and son-in-law are now also both suffering from my flu, and I am the only family in town!
Any other good ideas would be so greatly appreciated. Copper doesn't deserve this. Please, help him get away from me & get the help he needs! Thanks, and God bless you all for taking time to read this.
Our dear friend toeps says she can take this guy but need our help!
Will you PLEASE COMMIT to sponsoring this well deserving horse?
Even $5.00 a month will help enable this horse to live out his life to the fullest.
