This mare is trooper, she stood willingly while being mounted, she plow reins but easily could be taught to neck rein. Dream is one of four loves of my life!!! I couldn't adore her more if I tried. I adopted her from Columbia Basin Equine Rescue last April. She was listed on the same day that a truck was coming to take horses to slaughter. I didn't NEED a fourth horse, but I just couldn't let her go. What I didn't realize was I really did NEED a Dream. She always makes me smile and frequently makes me laugh. I'm going to bring over some of the highlights from her thread on the old CBER bb. Hope you all enjoy her stories.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've fallen in love with a picture...sigh, again!
I just think she's too adorable. I love seeing Sam up on her bareback. I'm hoping that she'll be a nice, calm horse that I can take on easy trails. My sweet little mustang, Gypsy (Fay on the feedlot) and I are having a lot of fun on the ground, but I haven't attempted to ride her yet. She's chilled a lot, but is pretty weary walking around the ranch to an unknown place. I'm thinking it will be a while before I can have a relaxing trail ride on her. My other mare, has never been on trail and has the same affliction (spooky in the unknown). She's awesome in the arena, but it will be a while before I get a relaxing, trail ride on her too. We'll see...Dream sounds like an absolute doll

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shelly sent me an update on Dream, so I thought I'd share
shellyr: Miss Dream is doing very well. No snotty nose......so far. I brushed her and got enough hair off her to stuff a good sized pillow. She is really cute, and she reminds me of my old Appy mare that belongs to my best friend's 8 yr old daughter now. Dream is a real sweetie! She is so funny too. She comes over and pins her ears at Sunline and tries to run her off the grain. Sunline just ignores her and keeps eating, so then Dream gets this expression like "OK, can I PLEEZ have a bite?" And Sunline lets her.

I have a few pics to share, but I took them, so they are not as good. Anyway, this is Dream on her first day in her new home: This is Dream today. We had our first ride! I'm soooooooo STOKED!!! All we did was walk, but I'm very impressed with her willingness. She moved right into the walk with light leg pressure. Once she started walking, she kept walking until asked to stop. She turns on light leg and very, very light rein. I think once we get used to each other, I won't even need the rein. She's really responsive! I asked her to speed up and she moved into a really nice faster walk. I loved her the moment I saw her, but now I'm positively "head over heels" I just cannot stop grinning!

Caryn hopped up to ride her around the round pen, and she kept coming up to say high instead. She's an overgrown lap dog!!! I don't know who's luckier - Dream or Caryn. (I want a CBER baby too..... )

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WONDERFUL NEWS!!!
Dream saw the vet today and had an eye exam. Turns out she has NO VISION IMPAIRMENT OR PAST MOONBLINDNESS!!!! The partially blue eye is not cloudy, but marbled. Apparently, this is not common, but is her natural color nontheless! The right eye (brown) that has green in the pupil may have been injured at one point, or she may be developing a cataract. It's something to watch, but right now, nothing to worry about
Now that I know her blue eye is not the result of injury, I can admit that it sure is a pretty color.
Edit to add: She was a real trooper for the WNV and was very good for the farrier yesterday. « Last Edit: May 30, 2006, 8:04pm by caryn » ********************************************************************* shellyr Pasture Ornament member is offline Joined: Dec 2005 Gender: Female Posts: 554 Location: Sunnyside, WA Re: DREAM - 18-20 y/o - 15h - Red Roan Appy Mare « Reply #57 on May 31, 2006, 10:47pm »

LOL...now I can be sure that she IS ignoring me when I ask her to circle to the right
Man, I just adore this horse! We had our 3rd ride a couple of days ago and she has one of the smoooooooooothest trots that I've ever felt. She doesn't "whoa"...well, she kind of whoa's, but it takes 5, 6, 7 steps for her to actually stop. It's almost like she's making sure that everyone knows that SHE decided to stop. My girl has a real sense of "self". She is a lot of fun to be around. « Last Edit: Jun 2, 2006, 8:31am by caryn » Link to Post - Back to Top Logged ********************************************************************* shellyr Pasture Ornament member is offline Joined: Dec 2005 Gender: Female Posts: 554 Location: Sunnyside, WA Re: DREAM - 18-20 y/o - 15h - Red Roan Appy Mare « Reply #59 on Jun 10, 2006, 8:29am »

Haha! That describes Dream very well! When I gave her the vaccine and the wormer, she would clamp her lips afterward and really glare at me. I don't think I have ever seen a horse give such an obvious glare. I got the feeling that she was saying, "I did NOT give you permission for that!" She cracked me up when she was here. I'm so glad that she is working out so well for you, Caryn. She reminds me so much of my first horse, who was also an Appaloosa mare with tons of personality.

I took those pics because I've never known a horse that rotate her ears like that. I feel like I'm being watched while I'm on her back!!! The ears are quite cute from the front though: She's pretty wooly right now. It's been quite cold here! It actually got down into the 20's last night That's dang cold for my area!

My sweet Dream is doing well and is a favorite at the boarding facility. Something about those big, soft eyes just melts everyone that meets her. Up until about a month ago, Dream has lived in a big stall and seemed pretty happy there. I don't like stalls and she is the only horse I have that does well in one. Anyway, I decided to try her out in pasture and she fit right in She minds her own business and has made a few friends out there. She is not old (20-22), but is not a spring chicken either, so I am reluctant to put her in pasture 24/7. I've decided that the best thing for her is to be out all day (weather permitting) and come in to her comfy stall at night. It's working out great! She is never reluctant to come in at night or go out in the morning, so I think I've found the perfect solution. On another happy note, a friend of mine has a student that is just dying to spend more time with horses. Her name is Leslie and she is getting back into riding after about 20 years away from it. She started lessons about a month ago and loves being at the ranch, so jumped at the opportunity to spend some quality time with Dream She fell in love with Dream at first sight and wants to come up a few times a week to groom her and take her for walks around the ranch (leading, not riding). She must have thanked me about 100 times in the hour we spent together today. All Leslie wants is to have a horse in her life and Dream just basked in the attention, so I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship All in all, a very good day at the ranch today

AWWW...wish I could make them bigger, but my sister took the pics and that's all I've got. I'll get more soon MTA: Those pics were taken within 2 months of Dream arriving here in Cali. She spent almost 2 months in QT at Shelly's place up in WA and it took that little amount of time from feedlot to home to make me comfortable putting a beloved child on her back. She's an open book and all I see is goodness, sweetness, and light. She is definitely a Dream.

Miss Dream had her first altercation (hopefully her last) with another horse in the pasture on Monday. I think it was a bite, but it is really hard to tell. No obvious bite marks, but she had trauma on both sides of her neck! There was lots of serum, but no open wound. She had hematomas (fluid filled lumps) on both sides, but no discernible hair loss at first. Now I can see a little more. It looks like another horse bit her from above. Luckily, she is healing quickly. I cold hosed and iced on Monday and Tuesday. Rinsed with Nolvasan and cleaned the whole area because while I could not see an open wound, was paranoid about infection. She also received bute twice a day through Wednesday. Iced and put equine mineral ice on the lumps on Wednesday. She's looking good today Still a little lumpy, but you have to feel it, rather than see it, to know it is there. I think that she will be fine. My vet is coming out to do spring vaccinations tomorrow, so I'll have him check it out. She doesn't seem tender on her neck anymore, but I'd prefer that she not get shots in her neck. Does anybody know if 4-way and West Nile can be administered through the rump area? I may have to hold off on shots if the neck is the only place to inject. Dream's new admirer (Leslie) is completely enamored by her Leslie's daughter (12 or 13, I think) has taken a pic with her cell phone and Dream is now her screen saver. She's told everyone at school about her and seems to be as enamored by Dream as her mother is. Can't say I blame them for that It's really nice to see how much everyone appreciates and loves Dream! She is so worthy of heartfelt appreciation. As is said often on this board, most people look at this horse and say, "How could this horse have ended up on a feedlot?" My answer is always the same...I list the reasons that we all know so well, but in my heart, I am still astonished that anyone could let her go.

HI Hope Miss sweety Dream is OK, someone was mean to her! Anyway, YES, you can administer those vaccinations in a rump muscle, in fact, my horses prefer their shots there. Just have to make sure its going into a large muscle mass.

Update on the bite from heck....Miss Dream looked pretty darn perfect on Friday morning when I turned her out. I couldn't even feel any swelling, so I thought all was well. When I got to the ranch after work, her neck looked horrible!!! I mean, horrible. A large section on one side had no hair and looked red raw . It was awful. Luckily, the vet was already scheduled to be there to give vaccinations. It turns out that the bite (we think it was a bite) caused a blister under the skin and it had ruptured on its own or she had rubbed it and caused it to rupture. The vet said that he saw one of these "just the other day" and that Dream will be fine. He said that it looks really bad, but will heal on its own. I was told to bathe it daily and use blu-kote, wound-kote or furazol antiseptic spray to protect it if she starts to rub on it and it gets bloody.....YIKES....So, I asked, "what can I do to make it less itchy??? I don't want it to get bloody Nothing. ARGHHH!!! So far, so good, no blood, but I caught her rubbing it on a tree (must not hurt as bad as it looks), so I sprayed her with the antiseptic. She's eating fine, is in good spirits, and the wound doesn't appear to be tender so that's good. Hopefully, it will heal quickly.

Dream is doing well now. The vet was right, the ruptured seroma (caused by a bite) looked bad, but is healing well and doesn't really bother her. YAAAYYY!!! I usually play with Gypsy in my weekly lesson, but decided to switch things up and get some insight on Miss Dream, so we had our lesson together yesterday. Kay did about 2 minutes of "getting to know ya" with Dream and said that it was obvious that she was very well trained. I said, "Yes, that's what I thought. She can be really responsive to subtle cues sometimes, but then really unresponsive to the same cues at other times. It's like she takes over and decides that she should be the leader." I wanted some more strategies to help when the "take over" happens. She's perfectly safe, doesn't run off or anything, but will become really unresponsive and push into pressure when she doesn't "want" to go where I ask her to. I see no point in getting in a fight about it. I don't want to try and force her to do things, I want to "cause" her to want to do them. Long story short, Kay gave me some pointers and things to work on that should be fun for both of us I noticed that when she yields her hindquarters, she has a tendency to get her back feet tangled up. She'll step on her own foot and I wasn't sure what that was about. Kay says that isn't necessarily due to age. Many young horses have that problem too. She said that getting a little more lateral flexion before asking to yield the hindquarters will help her. Sure enough, with a bit more bend, she crossed over in back like a champ. Kay also gave me some pointers on how to help her get more supple. Both ground/riding games and stretching exercises (Dream will contort for a carrot ). It was a great lesson and Miss Dream seemed to enjoy it too.

Dream and I went on a little trail ride today. I wasn't planning on it, but I saw an acquaintance of mine heading out on one of my best pals lesson horses and thought I'd join. It was beautiful today and I thought we'd have a slow and peaceful, meandering stroll. Anyway, we're off on our little ride and I notice that Pepsi is getting a bit excited. Nothing big, just wanting to trot. Andy is pulling back on both reins to stop him....Okay, I should have said something, but Andy's been riding for a while and Pepsi isn't my horse. I was thinking you know, you really should bend him using one rein...if you pull back on both, then the only place Pepsi can go to escape is UP!!!! We continue for a bit and Pepsi keeps trying to eat....Andy won't let him and is getting in a fight with him....Pepsi lunges for grass and Andy pulls up with all his might.....Hmmmmm, again should have told him to let Pepsi take a bite and then ask him to go forward...squeeze, kiss, tap yourself with the reins, if necessary, tap horse on butt. I didn't want to tell him how to ride, soooooo....5 minutes later, Andy tries to pull Pepsi's head up and up he went (little rear), then 3-4 bucks. I've got to hand it to Andy, he stayed on pretty well (bareback)...Until that last buck of course. Andy falls off (not hurt), Pepsi's still pissed, gives a couple more bucks and gallops for home. So, what does Dream do during the commotion....she grazed LOL....couldn't have cared less. I love this horse!!!!
