My gelding had an abcess on the chest that burst recently. It started out 9 months ago as a soft, walnut-sized lump right under the girth line, stayed benign for 8 months, and didn't bother him at all.
Then all of sudden, it hardened and grew to the size of an orange! It was quite painful, sensitive to the touch and he became quite agitated. After several days of applying soft, warm towel compresses, it finally burst and drained onto the ground .....ewww, ickkk! Like Niagara!
It looked a lot like Granny's sore.
It took 3-4 weeks to close and heal, just need to keep it clean and covered with antiseptic ointment.
We never knew what caused it, Vet thinks it might have been a splinter or some foreign body that stuck him from the inside of the girth.

And from someone who had a horse WITH pigeon fever last year... there is NOTHING to worry about. (if it IS that) Pigeon fever is NOT carried horse to horse. It is in the dirt, it is endemic (means it is everywhere). Flies pick it up, and spread it, often the small flies who bite their bellies (the belly button spot - which really is NOT their umbilicus, but whatever) the bacterium spreads into the lymph nodes of the belly and chest. it becomes HUGE, and then opens. once open, try to clean it daily, like any abcess, so it can heal from the inside out. try to keep flies off of it, as there is a teensy tiny chance one can get covered in the stuff, and transmit it... BUT... it is VERY RARE that more than one or two horses from a ranch that gets it 'get it'... It is NOT thought to be easily spread horse to horse. just general housekeeping like you'd do for any horse with a draining wound is fine. so, chill. and listen to the vet. and thank YOU so much for saving her Leo. and thank GOD she is not preggers.

I hate to be the one who post the bad news. But Pigeon fever is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS. We had a case at our barn last year. The horse had to be isolated per the vet. She had to stay in QT for 60 days. It is nasty stuff. I sure hope Granny does not have this. Here is a link that I found. I hope this helps. www.completerider.com/ucolorado/PIGEONFEVERINEQUINES.htmlOops. I did not see that the same link was posted.

If PEC can't transport I'll go and get her. I live close to Gypsy and I promised LauraS that I would help her get Rosemary over to this side of the mountains.

Granny will have to have a full 30 days in QT..she needs it just to be strong enough to be transported, even then I'm not really sure about her making a trip over the mountain..she really is pretty weak. I am hoping that the offer from Kelly in Walla Walla is still an option. that is only a hour from here.

I know that we have the QT & I'll pick up the bill from the VET today.. then we will know exactly where were at...she is eating everything I put in front of her..she lays down alot but I think its because she is so tired from all that chewing....LOL

Although I love the babies, it's a blessing that she's not pregnant. It would be another horse that shouldn't have been born in the first place. Besides, it may have just done her in!
I've been watching to see how things progress for her. I'm glad she's off the lot and getting all she can eat. That's what I would have done too! I'm glad that Kelly can take her. If she's close, then it's in Granny's best interest to NOT take a trip over the mountains.
DO keep us all posted on her expenses. I will try to send a little your way to help when I can.
Thanks so much Shawna!!!!!!

Granny/Lovie & Roman were put together yesterday! They are now inseperateable & it was an instant bond!! No squeeling, no jocking for food positions. Heads together. She is now in Heaven! Aztec is also with them. The 3 rescued amigos. I will send pictures soon. Thank you to all who played a part in this beautiful ole' gal's rescue. She has just blossmed! She no longer looks like a concentration camp survivor. As my husband says, 'she looks just like any other horse now'. But she still has a long way to go to get back her muscle tone in her back end. No butt cheeks at all! Blessings to all, Kelly

Kelly, Have I told you that I love you lately??? I can't imagine a better home for that mare, she captured my heart at the lot & Brody's after she was in QT. I will never forget the huge wound on her chest that yellow jackets kept trying to nest in....I never once had to put a halter on her to doctor her, she knew it had to be done...afterwards she would always shove me with her head & look for the treat she knew was coming. I almost cried when you showed these to me the other day...I am crying now..I have some pretty awful pictures of that poor mare, I'll get them to you, so you have how she looked when she came off of the lot..
YOUR THE BEST....
