Shimmer was rescued from the Enumclaw Auction today. He was headed to slaughter, along with the many many others today... The auctioneer said that he was a three year old Rocky Mountain Horse cross. They said that his owner had gotten sick and that he had to go. He supposedly has had a "few rides" and he was wearing a saddle and bridle in the ring. He is VERY calm, gentle and well mannered boy. In fact he has the best ground manners that I have ever seen... He is available for adoption for $300 which is all to cover his costs (purchase, trailering, first month boarding, etc). His price will go up as more time and money goes into him. Here is a picture of a pure Rocky Mountain Horse if anyone wants to compare... www.gaitn.com/HOOTIE.HTM

Somebody got themselves a very nice horse! Gosh, if you could have known he would be re-homed so quickly, you could have brought another one home!

He's a gelding Here are some pictures in good light. He is soooo sweet, but he is lonely in my pasture. My gelding won't let him join in with the group so he has to graze about 30 yards away. He really likes other horses, but is not herd-bound. He also seems to have brindle-type markings on his legs and his coat seems to shimmer in the sun.

oh cyberkitty... I am certifiable now... I'd better sell the filly I have in training FAST!!! and then get one of the other boys in training and sold FAST!!! dang... I'm over full again... how does this happen to me???
I 'do' have an excuse on this one tho... my daughter who rides taffy, has gotten SO much confidence!!! she is BEGGING for a 'faster' horse this year.... so, that really means fast-ER... which is NOT a fast horse... by ANY stretch of the imagination!!! She needs steady eddie.... who will canter. Taffy, also has progression this year... hers tho is progression of the arthritis in that left front knee, that was chipped/broken on the lot. It is a shame... but it is really hurting her this spring. I give her bute for any riding... but she literally got nearly to the ground when Linika tried to pick that hoof on Saturday at the show... she collapses from the pain.... and that is ON bute.... I think I need to bute her the night before and the show day... then after the show...
so... this boy can go into training after my little one now is done and sold... and the PMU draft gelding is started.... and next year, he'll be ready for Amy! Hopefully they can bond some this summer too.... I had a small glimmer of hope that Missy might be ridable, and she IS rideable, just not sure yet HOW rideable, and for how long... she is an oldster...
Rocky Mountain horses are KNOWN for their calm dispositions, tractability, and easy going natures... they are kind and gentle. and smooth gaited!!! and did I say CALM??? that is just what my Amy needs!!! so there you go. :-) Our family is great at rationalizing hehe

Yes, maam! Once you rack, you never go back! Is this your first gaited horse? Really nice horse you have there, I'd snatch him up too! Let me know if I can help in any way. I can also direct you to a wonderful site, with tons of training, gaiting information. Humane tack too!

Yes, you do ride gaited horses a little different, but it's a fun challenge! Do a search for Gaits of Gold. Not sure if I can post the link here. Make sure and read all the great training articles on the front page and stop by the new members section and say hi! You'll find a great group of people that will be excited to meet you and help. I'm rackn over there too. I'm no expert, well, if putting my foot in my mouth counts, then i guess maybe, LOL! Tack is a bit different too, but you'll get it. The bits they sell are the most humane and really great! I could go on and on. This will be an exciting new adventure for you! I have 3 walkers, drives my husband crazy that I could need another? Sounds rational, right?!! ha! You can pm too, if you like.

Okay, not to be negative, but not all Rockies Gait.................a friend has a purebred RMH and she doesn't gait, so she can't be registered. Maybe Tash has seen him gait? I didn't see that posted anywhere.......I bet he is really smooth even if he doesn't gait!!!! And he's gorgeous!

[i]Ok, like I said I'm no expert, I got really lucky with my first gaited horse 10 years ago. She gaits no matter what. My other two take some work. Some of the gaited horses need more help to establish gait. I've copied some information, this is my plan of action for my 4 yr old. Also I wouldn't expect to much gait from a 3 yr old. Good luck!
Walk on a very loose rein and use the ICB, I mean for you to put lots of slack in the rein , no bit or rein pressure, ask for a walk, if he speeds up too fast or tries to break to pace or trot gently check him back with the reins untill he slows> VERY IMPORTANT-as soon as he slows release all pressure, keep repeating this action of check and release untill he can walk at a consistant speed without speeding up. This allows him to become comfortable in the bit and also to realize that that it won't hurt him and that he can just walk. once this is accomplished you can then start to take on the rein and ask for just a slight bit of collection, but remember slight bit contact. You then teach a correct halt which gets the horse to stop on the hind and not the front( this is the beggining of starting to get him to round his back and getting a little more collection). then teach a half halt this helps the horse in movement to rebalance and come up on the bit and helps round out his back.
I really think you should forget about " Gaiting" fot the next 6 to 8 weeks and just work the walk, and ask for increasing speed in the walk without letting him break to pace or trot, in essence you are riding the edge, the edge of his fastest walk before he breaks, Get him soft and supple with the exercises, then one day it will all come together and he will walk into "HIS Gait".

Shimmer was picked up today and has now made the first leg of the journey. Reports say he caught, lead, loaded and trailered like the sweetheart he is. I can't wait until you get to meet him!

Shimmer is just stunning in person! Got to meet him early this morning when they got home, and chatted a bit this morning too. HUGE thanks for saving this wonderful guy - he is going to be an incredible addition to our herd, and one that we will eventually be able to ride! My niece Amy says he has the softest nose of any horse we have Peg

Oky Doky... ya knew the day would come... but Shimmer was in the dark.... the bridle went on... well oK then... chew... chew... OK. the saddle went on... he was just fine with that... then, I walked 'round to the other side, patted on the rump on my way by... hop, hop... (hmmm, what's that for ?) then... we walked down the driveway... well.... ok, so we crowhopped... teehee.... we didn't get far. and that is todays lesson. :0) saddling.... for Shimmer, and knowing he is NOT broke.... for me.
