Quatzie has gotten 'the package' to Oregon!!! Mistletoe did great on her first leg of the journey, and is settling in for the night there... The 'trade off' will occur tomorrow I think, and then Blazinsaddles will keep her for a night or two at her Dad's then head for CA on Monday. I expect she will arrive here on Monday in the midst of a huge rainstorm... sigh... and probably while I'm at work... sigh again... but I will have someone here to settle her in until I can come see her myself... and only THEN will I feel like she has made it!!!
I hope to get pictures from her 'pick up' by tomorrow, and I'll share!

Yes, Misletoe is here at my house eating her breakfast and talking to my herd like she fits right in. She is very easy going ...drank 5 gallons of water over night and ate all of her dinner. She's got a personality in a small package and lots of heart. She's will going to Corvallis today.. I uploaded one picture .. Here we go.. picture let hit the road..

Wow, she looks more like a Curly than a Cushing's girl to me--Cushing's horses seem to have a lot of muscle wasting.
I'm very, very glad that she's on her way. I admire the way you all put this together.

I feel good that.. I could help in transport Misletoe to this point..
Deb did a lot of work at her home to care and feed Mistletoe. Deb has her hands full with all the horses in QT and her own herd. I don't know how she does all of it, and she was not feeling good the day I picked up Mistletoe. She does need our support from this board, please thank Deb in anyway you can. I just want to bring this up.. with out Deb's support a lot of horse's wouldn't be here. I did get to see several of the CBER horse that was rescue from this board. We are doing good work, please support the folks that help make this happen and countless hours of work behind the scene. A Thank you makes a big difference ....
THANK YOU DEB, and ALL the Support Volunteers ....

yes, a HUGE Thank You to Deb, and Heidi and all the volunteers up in WA that make this happen!!! also a HUGE thank you to Quatzie for picking her up!!!
And, I'll be sure about the diagnosis only when she is here and labs are drawn, but in some of the pics I got sent to me, she is very thin under that long curly coat... and I think with her age (Blazin says she is well over the 30 mark, VERY long in the tooth) and that she foundered on all 4 badly... and she is a pony, with long curly hair... well, what are the chances she is one of the rare curly ponies? I think my bet is on the cushings ladies... but we will see! I'm just so glad she has gotten this far, and is doing well!!! she begins her next leg of the journey late today, arriveing at Chez Founder Rehab tomorrow. In knee deep mud... grrrr... well, maybe not knee deep, but we are out of the ankle high rubber boots and into the knee highs now! yuk!!! Rain rain go away.. come again.....

YAWN... The 'package' has arrived... a cute little curly mare has arrived here in CA, delivered by Blazinsaddles and her 4 kids... they drove ALL day, and Blazin is sick!!! then they stayed a while and tried to look around our place in the dark, and with school tomorrow, they were off a few minutes ago for the last 2 hours to home!!! Thanks, a HUGE Thanks to Blazin for the last leg of the journey, and a huge sorry for my crazy driveway... I promise my next ranch WILL have a better well for water... AND a circle drive.!!!!! sigh... yawn.... off to bed, and feelin' bad that Blazin is still drivin.... Will see ms Mistletoe in the am, but she has a pretty classic look.... curlie, and a big firm crest... and founder on all 4... and now settling in to our nice muddy abode for the night... night...

Hello to Mistletoe! Welcome to Sunny/Muddy/Sodden California.
I'm sure you're right about the diagnosis, Beth. Hope springs eternal, and all that.
I've never asked you: Do you start all yours off on Pergolide right away or do you try the chastetree berries first? Or does it just depend on the acth levels?

Happy, happy, that she's home and in good hands. Can't wait to hear how grandma settles in. I have tracked your other ones on your website and these rescue boards and watched their transformations into healthy horses. She has quite a will to live, I think. . .having been mixed in with bigger and more aggressive horses at the feedlot, having been sick, and then having been trailered a very long distance. I think that one's got more life to live!!!

Peg here... to answer the question on Pergolide. First step is to do labs to check ACTH levels, glucose, insulin, etc. Then, depending on the levels, we do start on Pergolide right away. Heck, we have 4 on it already, its easy to syringe in to ensure they get the complete dosage, and we've had the best results with using the medications.
If she also has insulin resistance, we'll start her on our low-carb Sterrett Pellets and beet pulp. Haven't seen her teeth so I don't know how she does on hay, but we have some low sugar hay she's been eating already so she'll transition on that too.
Poor baby is quantined away from everyone, so she can't see any of the other horse. No doubt she hears them tho!
And... assuming her lab work comfirms the cushings, we'll probably give her a shave/clipper job. Our experience is the horses with the long, curly Cushing coats feel MUCH better once rid of the hair, plus we can see their weight situation better.
She's a cutie!
Peg

yes she made it and rode like a champ and Beth your driveway was crazy small but thats ok was a good learning experience on how to get turned around when the driveway is the same length as my rig made it home at 2 a.m and saw a horrible wreck on the way home
say a few jingles for the truck driver's family who lost him to the concrete burm. Truckers are hard workers and have saved me a many time when broke down on the road,
Mmickey The puppies are sooooo Cute and OMG huge

Here is my newest buffalo... I mean pony... she is a cutie... for sure!!! I think we will call her Cinnamon... and here is a spot of her skin condition under all that fuzz... and the mats... looks like she had ticks or something allergic down under there... but, a shave and a bath in Microtek with some Equine Elite lotion should do it...

Little Mistletoe, or Missy... or Cinnamon... is nakkie tonight, at least half way! Poor thing is so matted with horrible skin underneath that long fur... So... Linika came over with her nice shearing shears... and her expertise!!! and she got her half done... poor gal, she has horrible skin sores under there, had one horrible inch long by 1/8 in thick splinter imbedded in her skin... we could only do half of her body today, Linka did a great job, and little Cinnamon was absolutely perfect... stood still, literally didn't move a muscle! She leaned into the clippers sometimes... and did the lip thing when she did her butt... here are som pics... and then my youngest daughter just HAD to take her for a 'sit'... she is obviously broke and a willing pony ride giver... we shall see later how well... after those feet heal up... for now tho, we will get her skin under control, get some labs sent off next week hopefully... and get her started on pergolide... Her body condition is awesome... so when her feet are better... we will assess her further!! Oh, and yesterday, the vet in WA called and said her nasal culture was negative for strangles... great news! we will likely do another, just to be sure...

So that's whats under all that hair!! She's is in good condition for that old of a mare ..
I am glad that the nasal culture was negative for Strangles. I spent a lot of time bleaching the stall she stayed in @ my house "just in case".. Keep us posted, my husband will not believe the after pictures.. I told him there was a pony under all that hair.. trying to make him a rescue supporter for the future.

Yeah, we were impressed with how good her condition was under there too! Body score is a 5!! not too bad at all! I think 'my' guess on her age from teeth is early 20's.... the 'line' is about halfway down the tooth on the lateral upper incisor... I think that means between 20 and 25.... of course there is a GOOD chance I am wrong!! LOL!!! more pics tomorrow!

Great job! There is a pretty little pony body under all that hair! Does she now have a blankie to keep her warm? She just lost her sub-zero hair coat. Hope that splinter came out easily. Ouch!

the clippers are the lister star. They are not my normal one. I use the heavy duty listers but they are actinf tempermental and used these ones. We let the 4-H kids use the "star's", they are vertually cut and burn proof. Not as strong through the matted and dirty hair but they work if I keep them oiled.
I sheer most of my countys Sheep, cattle and pigs for fair. I also sheer all for those and horses for the grand national. Took a break though the last few years.

Hmmm, Linka, I have two nice BIG Suffolk ewes (eeeeweeees) who are going to be needing their summer hairdos pretty soon. Have you ever visited Kings County? (CA)
Beth--it's hard to match that body with Cushing's. Wonder if she's one of the rare ones whose woolies are caused by something else? Wouldn't that be nice?
