WILDWOMAN WRITES: I am considering rehoming Leo, the approx 15 y/o, 15'1 HH Appy gelding I adopted from CBER August 2005. He has never been sick, and is a big solid easy keeper. Problem is tho apparently his tendons in his front legs. He is intermittently lame. Pasture sound tho. I will be losing the pasture my horses are on in a month or two-and cant afford to pay board for a pasture pet. He is QUITE handsome (my favorite actually) Big spotty butt, Leopard with 'frosting' Strong roman nose and a heart that will melt yours. He is located in Roy, Washington. No adoption fee to RIGHT home.

I remember him, Wildwoman! He's a hottie, all right! What has the vet recommended for him...bute on bad days probably, anything else? Aside from bute occasionally, MSM and someone suggested ground flax daily and thought that he might be completely fine. I'm sure the mud is no fun for him right now-and I have way too much of it. I LOVE the way he's built and I love his looks-I just wish I could ride him.

We are looking for a horse for disabled children. Love his spots! Has he ever been around children at all? Gentleness is a must for our desired horse. Kat in Lake Stevens

I had a niece and nephew living with me until this fall-they were aroud him but never rode him. He has a VERY gentle nature, but might use some de sensitization exercises. What are the ages of the children?

Hi Lisa. I hope you find a home for him. I will throw this out there to anyone on the fence...we have an older appy gelding that is my daughters horse. If you remember Gambler from the lot. He is PERFECT for my 6 year old. You'd have to work with Leo to see about his attitude toward kids, but if he is good in general, you might have a perfect match for kids eventually. I honestly can't say enough good things about Gambler. If this horse is anything like him, GRAB HIM!!
MTA: Leo is smokin' hot! I LOVE his look. What a beauty!

his attitude toward kids is absolutely fine-but they might do something that might startle him-flappy screaming kids might make him look twice-he has never had a buck or a mean bone in his body-that is why I said desensetizing him would probably do the trick-normally it is just me and we talk, Leo and I-he kisses and nickers.

Hey wild woman if you need a place to keep him when you don't have space you can temporarily keep him at my house you would just need to supply food and regular care. He is such a cutie.

Can you tell us a little more about how you have been caring for his legs when they flare up? Is there an old injury, are they bowed? I know a lot of barrel racers tend to get front leg injuries. I am just wondering if this is something that a surgery could fix, if it is a matter of maybe retacking the tendon's into postion.

Wildwoman, I have a line on a potential adopter in Hagerman, Idaho. They are wanting a pasture mate for their 20 year old gelding, whom they no longer ride due to arthritis. They are close enough that I could do a home check on them, and I believe they could pick him up. They have a barn and 5 acres. How is Leo with geldings? They were interested in Morpheus, but Morph doesn't like any male horses, having only been gelded last fall.

Hi Spyder-Geri is coming Sunday to pick Leo up and has the vet scheduled to evaluate his front end. Once that has been established we will have a better handle on his potential future use. Could be that he is simply a whole lotta handsome to pretty up someones pasture. He gets along really well with geldings-as soon as they realize he is HHIC-he lets the chain of command work for him tho-only keeps after #2 horse and takes care of little #4. he is the ONLY horse to tolerate my really bratty arab I had-all the rest he had ever been with got tired of his (Stormy's) shenannegins and ran him through the fence on diffrent occaisions-Leo actually really missed him when he left-screamed and ran back and forth along the end of the pasture closest to where my sister in law had pulled out with the trailer.

Leo arrived here on Sunday. We thought Dancing Light (Danny) would too. There is a brief delay until next week. I would like to have our vet out just one day to check Leo's lameness and examine Danny and give them whatever treatment they need. Heck, half a farm call equals a bag of flax! We have to be careful about expenses.
I did pull Leo's shoes and give him a barefoot trim on Sunday. He was amazingly relaxed considering his new surroundings. Has robust, nice feet that did not indicate any specific pathology. I will post the vet exam results as soon as he has been radiographed, etc.

Thanks, Geri, now if you coud give him a kiss on the nose for me-he will wiggle his lips back at you. Do you think a course of the barefoot trims that change the angle of his hoof and relieve some pressure off his tendons would work as someone else suggested? Lisa

The day after I pulled his shoes and trimmed his feet he was a little sensitive in front. Not too surprising since they often need to adjust to going barefoot. When I brought him in tonight he was travelling really well. He does have very nice hoof integrity. I can't say just yet that his prior lameness issue will be corrected by the trims. So far he has just been puttering around the pasture.
Once he is radiographed and examined by the vet we should have a better idea what is going on with him. I did not find any swelling in his tendons-they are nice and tight.
What a great guy! He has a heart of gold. He did give me the ol' lip wiggle for a kiss tonight. We have another Appaloosa (CBER Brother from 3 or 4 years ago) and they hooked up as soon as they saw one another. Although I saw him take some time out this afternoon to play with the wonderful Paint gelding Bud. He also has good taste in friends!
