Approximate 200 horses were at today's auction.
I counted 32 going to slaughter...
The low bid horse was a 2 year old papered Morgan gelding. He was chestnut, well mannered and sound. He went for $60 to slaughter. Also for $60 to slaughter was a grade QH-type cremello stallion - he also was sound, although not broke.
High bid slaughter horse was a big heavy QH type. He was broke to ride and ridden in the ring. He was sound and fairly young. He went to slaughter for $325.

Approximately 50 horses today. I think that eight went to the auctioneer (who sells to slaughter or saves for the next months auction). Average price seemed to be $150. Only five or six horses made it over the $500 mark. Registered, broke, young horses were going for about $200.
There were three horses who were in bad condition - all went to homes.
Lowest priced horse was a beautiful registered yearling. He was chestnut, very well built and very calm. He went for $25 (to a home).
MTA: Four people I talked to today said that horses they had gotten at the Nov or Oct sales had come down with Strangles.

So, is there anybody running an organization to help save the horses that are at or go through the Enumclaw Sales Pavilion auction???

No, there isn't any organized effort... but there are several different rescues (public and private) who go there and rescue horses when they can.

Sorry, so many questions, just want some info. if you have it. What public rescues go there? Do you know much about the Enumclaw Sales Pavilion? Do you know where the horses get transported to when bought by meat buyers? I would be interested in helping, if I can, I live in Puyallup, so not that far away from Enumclaw.

I go to every one of the Enumclaw horse sales. It is the first Sunday of every month. I don't think that any rescue regularly goes there, but several go there on-and-off... most of the Western WA rescues have gone there at one time or another it seems. There are different Kill Buyers that buy from there... they mostly go up to Canada, but one of the KB's will ship them to Nevada where they are then forwarded down to Mexico.
The auctioneer also buys horses and with him it is a toss up: they could go to slaughter, could wait for the next sale and be resold, or could be sold privately. If the auctioneer buys a horse you can usually buy it from him after the sale for a smallish markup.

I grew up in Buckley and went to Enumclaw High School. My mom used to take me to the Enumclaw Sales Pavilion all the time when I was growing up, but she made sure that we left before they started the sale of the "unwanted horses". I can't stand people that are cruel to animals, so it's really hard for me to watch the sale of the "unwanted horses", because they're not nice to them at all (from what I remember), and the last time I was there they used a cattle prod on them. I don't have the strength or heart for that. How do you cope with that? Do you ever buy "unwanted horses" there? I just adopted a filly through CBER, I would love to save more right now, but I have three horses already. Eventually I'll be able to help and save more horses. Let me know if you ever want company to the Sales Pavilion and if there's any way that I can help. Thanks!

Everytime I go I have to haul home in a semi! Opps ;D
I hate the place too. We save what we can, when we can.
WELCOME! You can ask all the questions you want!

I have rescued several from this auction this year... It is not as bad as you remember (no tasers), and there is no designation of "unwanted horses". All the horses go through same as each other... in fact the cheapest horse of this last auction was a very nice registered QH yearling (he went for $25). You can have a TB right off the track go to slaughter and a fugly 30 year old crippled pony go to a home. It is hard to tell which horse is going to go where, and registered stock is in just as much danger as grade. There are no "safe" horses at the auction unless the owner puts a high reserve on them... which is not common.

Tell me if any minis are going thru and what their pricing is...and if they are bought by kill buyers, don't they usually go straight to slaughter instead of feedlots? We've never really seen a mini posted on CBER's website, and I recall seeing only one on Shiloh Acres site...

LOL! Well, I got two Appy mares. One was a real sad case old-lady Appy that a friend of Dean's and Jess's was kind enough to take home. Thank you! The other was an Appy mare that more or less got abandoned at a trainer's barn. I had met this horse before and knew her history. I will be able to get her registration. Oly bid $150 on her, I bid up and got her for $200. Her old ad on the trainer's website read: "Breeze~ Breeze is a 5yr old 15.3hh Appaloosa Mare who is BROKE BROKE BROKE!!!! She w/t/c and goes up in the mountains, trail rides, very sweet!! Lunges, clips, loads, bathes, hauls, has even had 1 colt who was beautiful!! Her papers are in order so she can be registered! This sweet girl does Everything!! Make her a show horse or breed her or use her for 4-H! She was bred for speed so barrel race her!! Very kid and husband safe!!! $2000 Obo"

Tash got a great deal on her. The pro slaughter speech in the middle of the auction was sure fun to listen to. NOT!!!

Yeah, that speech was for the old lady appy. He was saying that this is what happens when we outlaw slaughter. I was like, WTF?, slaughter is NOT outlawed and this old lady looks like this. What is the excuse for her?
