JUSTIN- 2 - 3 year old, 13.3h, Morgan stud. He leads, backs, and is light in the halter. He was willing to have his feet picked up and his feet are in great shape. He has a kind eye, friendly and approachable. This cute guy has a bit of a gait in his step and the feedlot owner would sell him to people that teach horses to dance. These particular trainers are not nice to horses so we do not want this horse to be sold as a dancing horse!

I almost stuffed him in my Suburban today. With his personality, I'm sure he would have loaded just fine. This is a FINE horse. I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really wanted to take him home. I can't say enough about this boy. The person that adopts him will be extremely lucky. You don't even find this kind of horse through traditional horse trades/sales. He is worth at least 3 times what his adoption fee is.

I didn't know we had to tell them either. Although, I think he will notice when he is kind enough to do stalls and there is one extra one...
THankfully, my guy is pretty mellow and loves the horses and dogs and cats that find there way to our doorstep.

This boy is so wonderful looking. I hope he finds a good home.

The dancing horses that I have seen are ridden in traditional style mexican saddles. They play loud music and the horses "dance" to it by prancing in beat with the music and pawing the air also in time. These horses are trained by irritating the side of the horse until the wanted reaction occurs. The horses can eventually pick up the rythum, but most are cued by their riders with very sharp and huge spurrs. The rider jabs the horse in the side when he needs to pick that foot up, back and forth continuously until the "dance" is done. I have seen these at many parades throught WA and OR.

OMG! He is so pretty. I had a Morgan who was once wild with his own herd...so gelded late, and he was my FIRST horse, rode bareback all the time (couldn't afford a saddle too)...he was the smartest horse...and soooo loving, Morgans are great horses...Don't be affraid because he isn't gelded yet...mine was "proud cut" and very loving, kind and did I say smart? Oh ya I did. Someone will be very lucky.

Ranger, if we get him, he's coming to Palouse WA, 60 miles south of Spokane. We are trying to be approved as we speak. We will need someone to hold him till we can get approved and get him pickup. Where is the feedlot? If we don't hear from piopico in the next 5 or 10 minutes, we're sending the $550.00.

marcia...check with solarisa. she is keeping several horses until p/u can be arranged. her 4h group is helping her. she charges a small fee for p/u at the lot and i think she said $20 a week...check with her to be sure

Thanks everyone. You know I didn't plan on buying, but who could let the boy go to 'Dance school?? Now, nobody get on my case.......my daughter dances and her best male friend danced opposite her in the Nutcracker..............but a horse is different!

Does anyone between Wash. and the SF Bay Area, have a quarantine space for him for a month? He'll be going to a public barn and I wouldn't like to bring in the sniffles?

Congratulations. Another CBER baby coming home to the Bay Area. The more we have, the better able we are to spread the word. Justin is adorable and I can't wait to meet him! I think you and Justin and Amy and Buster and me and (Linda) need to have a welcome to California party!!!

Yes, he was- his photo appeared in the middle of all the others, and he wasn't on the BB. I very nearly scrolled down and missed him. I think I'm going to change the spelling to JustinTyme, and call him Ty. He's coming to Napa for Quarantine next week.

Piopico is coming back from vacation today and is planning on visiting Ty on her way home. I don't know how she was able to relax while on vacation! Hi all,
Yes, it was hard to have a vacation knowing Ty was on his way, and unfortunately, he arrived with Strangles. We stopped in Napa to see him on our way home today....poor boy, he DOES look miserable. But he let out a whinny when he saw Linda coming, so that's a good sign. AND, he isn't 13.3....more like 14.2........so he can get 'nipped' once he's feeling better. That'll make boarding him a lot easier. Lindal is doing a great job handling him- he seems not to have a mean bone in him, but of course, when he's feeling better, things might change. I haven't yet checked, but I presume all the horses that came down with him are sick? Bummer!!!

So far, I seem to have lucked out. My boy is still strangles free. I believe that Macintosh is showing signs and also Pumpkin. I'm not sure who else was on that load. I believe that there were 5 or 6, Justin, my Flash, Pumpkin, Macintosh and who else? MJ

Met Kerry today. She and her husband stopped by to see Ty.

Yes, Ty is sick. He gets penicillin 2xday. I'm trying to make it easier on him by not only going in to see him when he gets his shots, a.m. and p.m., but also going in at least 2 more times to groom him and to clean him up.

So far he is fine to brush, a little iffy about his face. I can clean all four feet. I can brush his tail. He leads quietly [probably because he's so sick!] around his paddock.

Kerry is right, he's at least 14.2 and his withers have to catch up to his rump. He could use some more weight and lots of muscle. He's a pretty dark bay with a pretty face. And so far, even though he's sick, he's a doll to work with.

My mare muffin was on that trip. She is still healthy according to vet check yesterday. She had a slight cough when she got here, but that is nearly gone now. Vet thinks it was a virus not strangles. She is a prima donna so we are gonna have to talk to cat67 about changing her name to something appropriate!! Her baby is active, and she is eating like a ....uhh....horse!!

Flash, JustinTyme, Muffin, Macintosh were on the load. I think there were one or two more, but I'm not sure which. Flash was the last one off so I didn't see anyothers. I am not sure if Flash is coming down with something or not. He was reported to be pretty lively and I don't see that. He is very quiet so far. So he might be somewhat depressed. I do know that Flash went to the feedlot with Muffin and Bozeman. Nothing more is known about their background. MJ

He's continuing to improve- his cyst ruptured, so now the gunk is draining, and his temperature is normal. Linda says he's not as eager to be caught for treatment now he's feeling better, so he had a little lesson on 'attending'. But he's scarfing down the hay, so should put on some weight.

That was Friday- he was VERY poorly- swelling all the way to his lips. But you can see Linda has her fingers in his mouth, feeling his teeth.

According to Sarah, Briar seems healthy so far. keeping our fingers crossed. Thank goodness Justin is ok, Marcia would be sick if anything happened to him. She fell in love with him to. Also, if anyone is looking for a possible barrel racer, go see our write-up about Briar under her name.

I'm so relieved Briar is healthy. I just don't know much Lori was able to separate the horses, on the trailer, once Justin showed symptoms. You probably have another week before you can be sure the others escaped it.
There was a 'barrelracingboy' who was posting in Dec. and Jan. about a barrel racer..maybe Briar would be good for him. She is SO pretty......JUST the same blaze as my old Piopico.

Update on Justin (Ty)

Ty is doing very well. I'm still able to give him his shots without too much fuss. He lets me flush out the abscess and wipe it down. He has a second rupture about 1/2 inch from the first. It too is draining well and I can flush it. He definitely doesn't accept the idea of a shot in the buttocks!

Today the latch on his gate failed and he took two short strides, cleared the yellow rope barrier, and with "fire in his eye" and a proud whinny in his throat, he galloped after my 28 year old mare. Ty must have thought he just broke out of Alcatraz.

She is in season, Ty didn't misread the signs. HOWEVER, my 32 year old gelding had different ideas. Kwaala might not have had "fire in his eye" but good old Kwaala, rose to the occasion. He danced around the mare shaking his head, baring his teeth, putting his butt in Ty's face. Ty relinquished the field (remember, he's just a newbie at this girl horse thing). And Penny, the old grand dame, just keep eating grass!

All in all, he was pretty proud of himself. So at dinner time, when the five broodmares cantered down the hill to the backside of the arena, Ty called to them, promised all kinds of enticements, flared his nostrils, bugled a few times, and those bad little girls just lifted their tails and ran off. I felt really bad for Ty.

Kerry has one very handsome horse with a distinct personality that is just emerging. Now that the swelling is going down, the nice shape of his head is visible. He has wide set eyes, a thick, long forelock, a nice narrowing to the muzzle and very expressive eyes.

given everything he's been through, I'm happy to see him active and moving about. He is really eating well and I think once he's through all this he'll gain weight fast. He really likes his grain mix -- so much that it's a great bribe at injection time.

As others have said, I don't understand how someone could send a horse like this to the feedlot! I mean, he's sound, his legs are straight, he has good feet, he's pretty, he's ready to be trained, and he's easy to work with.

Linda, the same can be said for a lot of the horses. I have Ranger (fka Flash). He is a nice horse, young and sound. Someone did work with him some, but I would say not for the last couple of years. I don't understand it either. Mary Jane

I finally spoke to the barn owner where I"ll be bringing Justin........he wants to wait 3 months after he's 'cured' before bringing him in. Apparently the county once QT'd his 100+ barn for 3 months after a strangles case, and he's not taking any chances. I can't blame him, but now I can only see my boy once a week. - he's 80 miles away.

So here he is at today's visit. Rain has been coming down endlessly, and he can't be taken out of his paddock, so I tried to groom him in there. I was afraid of getting stuck in the mud and sprawling- or pulling my foot right out of a boot....Now that he's feeling better, we did an 'I'm not letting you near my head' deal.........but eventually, I was able to brush some dried mud off his off-side rump, and slowly moved up as far as his girth. But then my boot made that sucking sound and he spooked. So round and round we went again. But he never made any move to kick. I took carrots, but he doesn't know what they are. I sure like his head...very neat and intelligent-appearing. He WANTS to cooperate, I feel......look at his head in the picture......:Ooohhh, that feels so good- getting those dried clumps off"...he's just scared he'll get 'stuck' again.

Just had our weekly visit with Justin, and today I was able to brush him all over, because the sun has been out for a couple of days. And we've moved him into a bigger, DRY paddock!!!! He's one smart little guy........a bit reluctant initially to cooperate, but by the end of his 'massage', I couldn't keep him far enough away, to keep ME out of his pictures. And DH was most impressed that he chose to rub his eyeball on DH's hand. He still has mud balls from his fetlocks down- that's next weekend's job.......get some water and work on those. AND his tail! I also found his 'sweet spot'.......the root of his neck. I thought he was going to sit down, he had his head so far in the air............and SUCH a 'camel' lip!!!!
Nibbles was a bit disturbed that he got moved one paddock over- she enjoyed flirting with him. As he has to stay at Linda's till June, we'll wait to geld him to make SURE the rain has finished.

Good news ..the barn manager here has conceded that 3 months wait is too long...........I can bring him after 2!! That should be just about right, considering I have to wait till the ground dries to Geld him. So now we're looking at sometime in May......whoooeeeee.
Tommorrow.......well, it's raining again, so it may not be dry enough to do the 'big clean' I planned, but we'll take the necessary gear in anticipation.

Justin is doing wonderfully . It was dry so we took him to the round pen for the first time and Linda worked him. It was apparent that he'd had no experience there, but it took NO time and he caught on. He has a beautiful extended trot with suspension, BUT........on the pictures we took, I can see that his trot is slightly broken........his front toe is still on the ground after the other 3 feet are off . Perhaps this is what the volunteers saw at the Lot when they said he "had a bit of gait in his step". I sure couldn't see it when he moved- I was so ga-ga over the amount of extension. He followed Linda to the center, freely, and with a couple of interruptions, allowed her to pick up all 4 feet.......then I took him back to his paddock, washed his mane, and braided it over on the one side. He also let me pick out all 4 feet. This is one happy horsey Momma

The second photo is lovely, really showing some of his movement. He was a joy to work with.

Okay, Kerrie, next time I get to dress and do my hair, wear nice boots, before we take photos. Ty looks fabulous and I look like the ranch hand (oops! that's what really am!).

Ty is putting a little weight on and is extremely friendly. However, he hasn't quite forgiven me for the shots!

His head and face are truly gorgeous. And there's a little bit of krinkle in his forelock which gives him a bohemian look.

Kerrie will do well with him.

Kerrie and Fred came out in the rain to work with Ty. Kerrie is extremely patient and quiet with Ty and he responds to her. Ty is very good to work with. He isn't afraid and not aggressive or pushy at all, just wary.

Kerrie had me work him in the roundpen again and he remembered everything from the last session and we made lots of progress. He's very quick to catch on and remembers what he learns.

He is leading quietly, stands quietly for Kerrie to groom and work with him. In the roundpen he moves easily in both directions, walks, trots and canters nicely (at times with very good energy!) and joins up nicely. He stands fairly well already to be petted, brushed and have his feet cleaned w/o a halter in the middle of the roundpen. His eye stays soft the entire time we are working.

With dogs, foals, cats and the clatter of people working in the barn he stayed calm, just interested in everything. Oh, and that includes one of my in-season broodmares calling to him and trying to sort a get him to come visit her!

He couldn't have a better home than with Kerrie and Fred, they are both so patient and committed to helping him and giving him a good home. And, he and Diego will be a beautiful pair together!

He's doing so wonderfully.....it just wasn't worth getting a picture in yesterday's weather. He's so *smart*.........'course every Mom says that about her kids!!!!!!! But he remembered so quickly what he learned last Sunday about the Round-pen work, and again, such great suspension in his trot. Maybe I WILL have to do some Dressage with him.

Today, Justin and Diego were gelded. Justin(Ty) will be coming home to me next Tuesday- Diego(Taz) will stay at Lindal's..being older, his operation was a bit more traumatic. Aura may come down with Justin........Tazmania is juggling whether to have another month of lessons with Lindal.

As Piopico said, yesterday we gelded Ty, Taz and Krewe (the 3 year old paint miniature). We started at 10 a.m. and worked through to 3 p.m. Then checked the eye on my POA -- helped it but she does have a concerous growth starting. She 28-29 this year. She may go to UC Davis for surgery.

Anyway, the day was long and difficult. Krewe did really well and the surgery went quickly.

Ty really didn't want to come down to the barn area (think he had a suspicion of what was going to occur?). He went under nicely and had minimum of drugs. Everything went smoothly and since he was out, the vet removed his wolf teeth also. He recovered nicely, stood very shakily and after 15 minutes walked slowly to his paddock. Not as spritely as the miniature did.

Taz was a very different story. First, vet examined his teeth and concluded that he was closer to 20 and that worried her -- gelding an older horse opens up to many more complications. And, some of the "studdyness" is learned over time and he had been a stallion a long time. Not sure he would loose it. Also, it's easier for bowel to slip through because on older horses the muscle isn't as tight. Okay, we went over everything twice and then proceeded. Taz had a surprise of his own -- drugs didn't affect him much. And there was mucho to remove. For a small guy he was a big guy. He fought the drugs and never did totally relax like the others did. And the vet only had a few minutes to put some stitches in before he was waking up and trying to stand. He was ready to move off almost immediately after standing. Vet was impressed with him.

Today all three guys started to get their antibiotics (other than what the vet had given them) and were washed off around their legs, etc. All were walked a good 15-20 minutes. Ty and Taz are in large paddocks so they had more room to move around in during the night and today. None have unusual discharge or swelling. And our weather cooled down with a stiff breeze this evening. Means a minimum of flies.

It was hard on the guys and surprisingly, very hard on me. Now we just need to walk and medicate for the next week, more vigorous exercise the following week.

Patience, Patience......I keep saying. The Vet thought Ty should not be trailered home for at least a week more, so I'm waiting.......the Barn owner has been holding a stall for him since March......I'm lucky he's a pretty laid-back farmer-type!
We walked Ty yesterday and washed him; he seems really quite normal. Diego did the 'Arab dance' when the hose was put on his front feet........R-L-R-L-R-L-R-L-.He didn't like it too much. He is SO handsome- his coat is gleaming. Next weekend, I WILL take new photos.

Well, "next week" turned out to be raining.........AGAIN!!!!
But today, May 31, Justin(Ty) finally arrived at his forever home..along with Aura, for Tazmania. We all agree that he's grown 1-2 inches while at Lindal's. All that good food has gone into upward growth, but with regular lunging and, once he knows how, driving on the local hilly trails, he'll develop the musculature to carry me and we'll start 'backing' him. New pictures coming by the weekend.

A year almost to the day from when he arrived in the Lot, I sat on him!!!! Yay.......... He didn't mind at all, just didn't want to stand next to the mounting block. We think he's coming 4, but he's still very 'young' in mind.......distractable, fidgety etc. But he's a sweetheart, and I have high hopes for him.

Well, my young man, (that bucked me off), is now having daily training with an older 'male' trainer. At his first ride last week, he commented......"this horse is very lazy and has a hard mouth". Did I not know that!!!!!!!! 'Moves like molasses' hardly starts to describe him. He's SO laid-back, quiet, unspookable...........he's just like a dog..........is quite happy to just lay his head up against you and be petted. So yesterday the trainer said,"want to ride him- I see you have your spurs on". I'd just been on an hour trail ride on my Peruvian, and decided to try the spurs because he's short and my feet hang down below him The spur just adds to the length of my heel.
So I watched the trainer ride circles in the round pen, doing 'disengaging the hips' in real small circles.........and he's really whupping him to keep him going............spurs and a dressage whip. And he did speed changes at trot and canter......Then I got on. And he responds the same to me...........I can get him to circle, and trot and canter, but it takes SO much hitting on him, yet he won't react with less. I'm committed to a month of training, but I'm really wondering what the result will be. I'm actually thinking, if all he wants to do is walk around, maybe I should rehome him to a 'Disabled Riding Program.

A friend who has visited Ty twice when I was on vacation, made an interesting comment....she said, "He acts like an autistic child". And he does!!! If I'm right at his head, he responds to me, but back off or get on him, and it's like he doesn't 'get' subtle aids- you have to make BIG aids to make him realise something is being asked of him.

Hi Kerry,
I could be "way off" because I am certainly no expert, but it sounds to me like your trainer is asking Ty to do things that are generally used to slow down a more forward/excitable horse. Small circles and hip disengaging takes away from moving out, rather than promoting it. Horses with less or no "go", are generally more willing to move in striaght lines (point to point) than they are in circles. They tend to need a "reason" to move out. If you want to bring his energy up, there is a game called Point to Point that Parelli advocates. I've used it with Dream and she responds really well.

Pick a point in the arena to ride to, try to make it a relatively straight line and stop when you get there. For instance, you could set up cones and ride from one to the other. When you get to the cone stop, you've reached your destination (purpose) and Ty gets a reward (stopping and maybe a nice pet and praise). He should be more motivated to reach the next cone. Of course, this can get boring quickly, so once he understands the game, you'll need to modify to keep him interested and motivated. Point to point is easy to do on trail. The key here is to reward him for getting to the destination. If you continue to press him forward, forward, forward with no purpose at all, then the game won't be beneficial.

I'll try that Caryn, once I start riding him without the trainer. His purpose in teaching Ty to flex, is that he can't buck if his head is turned. And that's what I asked the trainer to do- give me a way to prevent the buck if I sense one coming on. Once I'm sure that he has a 'stop', I'll take him on the trail, because I think that MAY give him a reason to move out.

Just on the surface of reading what you say about the trainer, I would agree with Caryn and also with the fact that I worked with a similar type of young horse that was very laid back and that I had to work very hard on, HOWEVER, that being said, the key thing to remember is that if a horse is sensitive enough to feel a fly or a mosquito, they can feel you! Brannaman makes a point of saying this in his clinics. Oh so true, with the horse I had, once I had the disengagement and the one reined stop clued in, I began rewarding the slightest try for what I asked, ( not hitting, kicking hard etc, just asking) once he got that, he soon became wonderfully light and responsive and what a joy because he was not spooky or reactive, but was light to the aids because he knew the reward was there. Hope this makes sense. Sometimes some guys are too strong in the aids and do not wait for the right response and constant drilling without feel makes a horse feel tough or heavy, how can an untrained horse be hard in the mouth??? He can't really...
I so agree with Caryn about "bringing up the energy" in your own body to get it from your horse and vice versa- this change in physical thought and kinetics communicates to the horse, its much easier to bring the enery up in a horse than having to bring it down, you will grow to appreciate his laid back attitude as its possible to be that way and be responsive.

Ty is still misbehaving. Apparently he 'launched' 2 riders last week, the second being the older trainer, and he's sufficiently hurt that he hasn't been able to reteurn! Plus Ty ran down the stable cleaner who was holding him on the ground. I'm thinking he needs to go somewhere to be re-started on the ground- somewhere that has 2 people available to 'emphasize' the requests. With what is going on in my life right now, I don't have the time.......or the ability.

How big are the circles the trainer is asking him to trot and canter on? If they are relatively small it may be very difficult for him to do as a young horse. I've had young horses that seemed very lazy when it was actually that they were uncomfortable balancing with a rider. Once they had developed their balance when mounted and muscles and such they were fine. I hate to say it, but it is a bit disturbing to hear about your trainer using whip and spurs on him to make him trot and canter circles, especially so early in his training. I just so hope they really big circles, like the size of a riding ring. If they are the size of a round pen I think they are too small to ask him to do at this point with a rider. I sure hope he isn't getting soured on this whole idea of being ridden, but it sounds like he might be. I hope I didn't offend.

Have you had a chiropractor look at him? Have you had a vet look at him? Circling a horse with chiropractic problems is very likely to result in misbehavior. If every time they work him they are causing him pain he is very likely to develop a less than pleasant demeanor towards them.

modified to ask How sure are you that the trainer is qualified enough to make sure they are using properly fitted tack? I've known some supposedly excellent trainers who could not tell when their horse's saddle fit or not.

modified to also add that he may have developed chiro problems for any number of reasons so even if he was okay when he was first turned over to the trainer it does not mean he is still fine. Also it is very possible that if he has a physical problem it might explain his not wantin gto go forward.

No offense taken anywhere! I'm open to any and all suggestions. I certainly CAN have a chiropractor see him...........I haven't had the Vet see him for "bucking problems", but he's had several sarcoids removed, but they were up on his neck. It's the unpredictably of his actions that's disturbing. This trainer wanted to teach him to 'bend'.......the theory being, that he can't buck if he's 'bent'. But it's possible that he's having trouble balancing while in a tight circle- and yes, it is tight.
As to saddle fit- I offered my Australian saddle, which was fitted to Ty by a professional saddle fitter, but he prefers to bring his own Western saddle.........fit...? No idea. For the trainer's sake, I think I should 'excuse' him.......he's not a young man, but there's also a language problem- English is not his first language, and I think he must have missed some of the explanations I first gave him.
I think I'll start with lunging Ty; bringing him in to a small circle to disengage the hind-quarters, then let him back out to the 'round-pen' circle. MAybe with the saddle on, but no rider. I'll get a chiro. appt., then see about another trainer.

Have you thought about working some with Marie again on the ground with either lunging or long-lining? She really understands the nuances of a youngster as well as how they learn balance. I don't even canter with Jamaica yet as she is still learning to move with collection and balance at the trot. Dressage training can be applied across many disciplines.

A horse can't "bend" until it is supple, so I agree that perhaps he's being asked to do something he's just not ready for.

Oh, and I totally agree with getting a chiropractor out to look at Ty.

Please let us know what the Chiro says!

Another thought too...teeth issues can cause all kinds of behaviour that people attribute to misbehaving, till they get in the mouth and find sharp points or abcessed tooth or retained cap, etc etc. Has his mouth been really checked well by an equine dentist and does he have his wolf teeth still, etc? I have known several horses that did this kind of thing and once their mouth was "fixed" it was an amazing difference. You never know...

His teeth should be fine- the registered Equine Dentist did him in Aug. 2006, AND May 2007- I'm very pleased with the quality if his work...........I have a more detailed chart of Ty's teeth than I do of my own!!
And Jen, yes, I can certainly get Marie, (a local riding teacher) out after her vacation.

My mare has very similar behaviors. Two trainers, Charles Wilhelm and Jerry Tindall, have told me that she has "explosive behaviors" and that she could be dangerous if she's pushed. They have also told me that she has a good mind and that she will come around with proper training and handling.

These horses may be lazy, etc., but, according to Tindall and Wilhelm, these behaviors arise out of fear.

But, it is a very deep fear - it's not something that you can desensitize them to, but something in them that is causing them to be so protective. When Tindall was working with her in the roundpen, she was so stiff and heavy, you could hear the thudding of her hooves.

My mare does not appear fearful - she's confident, and friendly and likes people. She's not spooky and she's been a good lesson horse for beginners. I always thought she was easy on the ground, but little things, like not giving her feet, are/were part of the whole picture.

I began to explore this in earnest because she would never take her left lead. Was she balanced? Had their been an injury at some time? She's been under saddle for awhile now, won some ribbons in a local schooling show last summer. The stiffness was not always apparent - she was just "lazy," and "laid-back."

I had taken her to Wilhelm over a year ago and she benefitted greatly. Since that time, she has been flexed and flexed and flexed, in the saddle, on the ground, she yields to pressure, disengages her hindquarters - I'd thought it was all fixed and that undesired behaviors were simply the behaviors of a green horse.

But, it's not all fixed - that came up with the left lead issue. During the Tindall clinic, I got to see some of the explosive behaviors because he pushed her. She is not as dramatic as Ty is (she's 9 years old), but it was still scary.

Tindall really pushed her in the round pen - none of the languid loping on his watch - he made her move! She was very upset and actually began calling for me but, finally, she picked up the pace and picked up the correct lead. And, then, she began to relax and her body and head began to arc inward.

There has been noticeable improvement since then (early June) but, luckily, we're having another Tindall clinic next month.

We still focus on flexing and we make sure her body is arced inward - head and hindquarters- when she's lunging. She can be very resistant to this and she will often "snake" her head and attempt to bolt. We have our good days and our not-so-good days. She gives her head now and moves out pretty well and she's nearly always in the correct lead.

But, she still bolts while being lunged and last night she crow-hopped with me (that's a first) and she kept trying to change direction - it was not a fun ride. Luckily, Evan, the trainer, was around and he rode her so that she finished her ride on a high note. I'd have been out there until dawn if I'd had to hang in for a good ride.

Sorry to go on so long about my horse, but it might help you understand the importance of flexing and what might be behind Ty's behaviors.

There was a trainer from Sunol participating in our last clinic. One of the mustang folks at the ranch has a gelding in training with her. She was working that horse at the Tindall clinic. Anyway, I like her. I was impressed by her openness and her willingness to work a client's horse with another trainer - often trainers don't have time for one another. I was also impressed with the way she handled the horse.

Sunol may be too far away from you but, if you're interested I'll put you in touch with her. Naturally, I forget her name but I have her card somewhere. I did ask about prices and I remember that I felt they were reasonable. I'd use her if I needed to change trainers.

I think you just need to get the right trainer and hang in there with Ty - maybe do nothing but groundwork for awhile. My expectations have been adjusted many times.

Just to add - my filly, who is about Ty's age, used to buck often when she began to lope. She likes speed, gets very excited and she bucked.

They slowed her down, shortened the distance between the trot and the lope and spent more time on the ground. She also has to work under saddle - go over cavaletti, go around cones - all that.

I've never ridden her - I can wait until she's more mature - but she hasn't bucked since February. Tindall threw a lariat around her flanks - she gave a few desultry bucks and then just began to lope around the round-pen. She worked fine like that in both directions. He doesn't think she's going to be a problem.

Don't try the rope thing by yourself - it has to be done by someone who really knows what they're doing because you can teach a horse to buck that way.

THat certainly sounds like Ty. I'll keep all these things in mind............but first we have to move out of our house and get it sold by September.........not a pleasant thought, after 24 years!!

Ty leaves tomorrow to spend a couple months at a trainer's in Sunol. We'll get a Chiropractic check before he starts being ridden, but in the meantime, will learn to 'pony', AND move when asked.........quickly.
