well, you had a great view of her napping over the last half hour, but she's up again now... looking uncomfy, but it's also hot here, in the 90s today. some of the swishing is prolly flies, they seem to like the straw for some reason. she has hay outside, so it's telling that she's inside napping and not eating. I'm betting tonight.

now I changed my mind, I stripped a little milk out tonight , and it's still clear... I think it should change to white when it's within 12 hours or is it 24? anyway, it's clear. virginia is dark pink, not purple yet... but I'm still watching... the camera is way better at staying 'up' now... not sure why. lol...

Once I get to the website, there is nothing there...just a purple screen and your number etc......zippo! NOTHING! DANG IT!!!! Beth, what do you think of the description of Annie? Is it normal to have such a huge belly, that shifts to one side? And no fat on the topline, but etc.?!?!

hmmmm... I'm on there now, and getting a feed fine... you do have to click on the arrow to get it started the first time, then it's streaming live. she is just standing there, gestating...
and nope, she sounds preggers possiblly to me too... but mares are funny, and sometimes they get belly's... sedation and palp is the only way you'll know... darn it... but I guess better to know ahead, than find a sickly foal one morning...

I have had mares actually stay fully clear with no waxing until the baby is actually on the ground - seems more common in maiden mares. So - don't bet the bank on milk and boobies lol. I am figuring if she is turning down food and is sleepier than normal - within 48 hours for sure. Have you taken her temp daily? If you keep a temp record it is easier to help predict. Her temp will stay normal then spike and then drop suddenly about 1-3 hours before Sara

I'm still betting on tonight, but maybe tomorrow....do i get a prize if I'm right? I guessed the 27th weeks ago....Can't wait to see what the baby looks like. Luckily all my mares have foaled a day before or after thier due dates, even the maiden ones. Oh, wait, one mare went 3 weeks over one cold spring...poor thing was prego for almost a full year!

yeah, the 'book' says the 27th... hmmmm, I can find a prize... how 'bout you get the first poo? hehe... ok, never mind... Let me think, I'll find a prize.. she is VERY cranky right now, didn't eat any breakfast, and won't hold her tail down since middle of last night... how luck could I get that she'd deliver mid day? well, I have chores, so that'd screw me up actually.. LOL!!!

hey, anyone have any thoughts on how to get the flies to go away? we didn't have a problem until we put down the straw... they seem to love that straw! if you sit in there, you see them all over it! I have spray to kill them but don' t want chemicals on the foaling straw... why DO people use this for any thing else? I'm about to strip this sucker and go for shavings! can I spray her? I'll not do her belly, but I'm gonna go spray her in a few... but just fyi, it's Saturday, I have chores, and I have NOT showered! so NO COMMENTS on my hair!!! :=)

I have spray to kill them but don' t want chemicals on the foaling straw... I know what you mean I get that if I feed 3 way as well. The chaff that falls near the bales gets a bunch of flies (more then the poop does. ) The poop dries out quickly here but the straw/hay holds the moisture under it and they LOVE that (that's why it's so good for gardens) I did finally give up and use some shavings but not a lot and just let the babies be on the ground. There were soft dried poop dust corners in the yard to make a comfy bed. (That's where the big horses slept already) You can try a skin so soft or Listerine based spray on mom and baby I think. I finally gave up and was using a spray bottle on the walls and covers at night to kill them in their sleep.

You can spray the straw with white vinegar without concern. It is a bit stinky but seems to help. People use straw because as the mare is delivering the placenta/afterbirth can go in and out of the birth canal and take debrit with it- small bits of dirt and shavings can cause a BIG infection. Straw is less likely to cause problems.
WORST case - you could bed the stall with grass hay instead. an expensive alternative, but it might not have the fly issues you are seeing. Also - get a box fan and blow it on the straw. the flys dont like the wind. Might get some of them off of there. fly tape can help reduce numbers as well. Put up several strips all around the area. Those and fly traps.
The flys seem to have gone bonkers the last week or so - don't know if they are getting in one last push before winter or what. We didn't have many at all and all of a sudden they are thick.
you can also fly spray the mare well - use something not horribly icky and make sure it is water based so you can rinse her off easily. BUT - at least they won't be climbinb all over her.
If she is really cranky and not in the mood for food - give a tube of probiotics(probios gel is good) I always do this when I notice my mares are headed for a delivery and are cranky ladies! Gives their system a little boost to help them deal with the stress of birth.
Take care - I am betting it will be about 2am tonight lol. At least it is supposed to be clear and not overly cold!

so, no moon tomorrow night? hmmmm... perhaps she'll make it that long, I'm still checking her signs, vulva is light purpleish, milk still clear... and tonight we plan on being home, so that puts tonight out... LOL!!! her breeder (grandma) says the twins were born at 10:30 and that mares foal at the same time that they were born, so there you have it, if she doesn't foal by 10:30 ish, we can all go to sleep... HA! I'm thinking there is a joke in there somewhere.... hehe... OK, I'll let ya'll know what I see in person!
