I know this is in the wrong spot, but thought it may get more exposure here.......Please help!
I recently discovered there are 5 horses up the road from me that have essentially been abandoned at a local stable(That has closed down). There is someone there who is donating their time to feed the animals and take them in and out of the stalls. These are all very sweet horses, and need forever homes! 2 of the older horses, one an Appy and one a Palomino, have been used for years as camp horses and love children. There is one little paint mare(Owner abandoned her), registered and has been trained but does not know a whole lot, and one little Warmblood that has an injury and is not sound (Not sure if she ever will be, she had broken her shoulder). If you guys can think of some ways to help, please post or PM me for more details. The owner of the stable died, and the husband ( A non horsey type of person) lives out of state. These guys need to find homes asap, especially the old farts who need dental care and mushy food. There was a 9 month old colt and a cat, but I have found homes for them.....I know with the economy the way it is, it will be really hard to find homes for these but thought I would start here....

They are in the Springfield Oregon area....I was thinking about setting up a fund at Mckenzie Feed in Springfield, if anybody wanted to help buy some Senior grain or??? If anybody knows of anybody looking for great kids horses, these guys are fantastic! Any other ideas? The little paint mare is a sweetie too, just needs some tlc....I don't know what will become of the 20 year old QH stud, he is an absolute gentleman but who wants a stud?!

I will try and get photos, but with my schedule it will be difficult....probably not until this weekend. The palomino and appy are both around 30 years old and have been used for kids camps and lessons for years. The paint is 6 and the warmblood is under 10.....I actually work close to Wagon Wheel feed in Creswell, and they are the cheapest as far as feed goes...It would probably be best if I bought feed there, since they are way cheaper than Mckenzie feed....does anybody have any other suggestions? Know of any kids camps etc. that could use some bomb proof horses? The QH stallion is 20...very sweet, and well mannered and broke to ride as is the paint.

Pictures have been posted on today's Eugene Oregon Craigslist. It's the 19 year old stallion and Farley. The town is MARCOLA next to the title. Please look, these guys need homes, there is another older horse that is a palomino. She is not quite as old as Farley, but both she and Farley are full of it still!!! Modified to add: The stallion is skinnier than the picture of Farley at this point, the posted pics are not current...He is maybe a 2..... If anybody wants to help donate feed, or can think of a way to help these 3 please pm me! I am willing to bring them here and get some weight on them if they need to travel out of state!!!

Is it possible to geld the stallion? I know that when a horse gets to an advanced age there are certain risks to doing so - BUT Just curious. If this guy could be gelded I may have a spot for him (working on hubby!!! i have a soft spot for sweet old stallions, but already have a sweet old stallion, so would need to be a sweet old gelding lol!) Yes, its possible to geld them at advanced age, look at Champ and Morph. Biggest issue is getting them strong enough weightwise, etc to withstand the procedure as vets are reluctant to use the drugs if they are super thin as well as old.

Icehorse, yes that is one of the ads...Farley is on there too, but I don't know how to put the link up! The stallion is the biggest lover you will ever meet! He is a doll, and deserves a good home....I will find out how much it will be to geld...the problem is, he will need a safe place to reside while getting him fat and after the procedure.....He is broke to ride, is gentle with kids etc. not that I recommend kids handling him......My farrier has offered to go up Sat. and trim hooves on everybody and I will worm them (Lightly).........

I like that poor stallion stuck in that small pen. He looks very gentle and wise. Hope he finds the very best home imaginable! Please, don't leave him behind to an uncertain fate. In my opinion, he looks like the best one of the three. . .not that I don't love them all. That's my problem!

The stallion has found a home, now the only 2 that are left is the old Appy gelding (Whom may have a home) and the Palomino mare (thought she had a home--it fell through) The Palomino is in her early 20's and is trained to the hilt...she has even been in an article in a major equine magazine....Now, she is abandoned....owner does not want her and left her behind

I went up to pick up the Palomino mare (I found a home for her) to come and stay with me while her new mommy is on vacation....That would leave the old guy Farley there by himself....I couldn't do it, so I loaded him up to!!! I am such a sucker! I need another horse like a hole in the head! The old guy all but knocked KC over, trying to RUN for the trailer! They both jumped in and out of the trailer like it was old hat to them, I never even felt them wiggle on the way back to the ranch. I unloaded them, and put them out in their little field where they promptly started eating the grass. KC and I then put blankies on them, to cover their bony bodies. The palomino is actually way worse than the Appy. He can eat some hay if it is fine stemmed, and loves alfalfa because he can pick out the alfalfa leaves! He was bucking and snorting when I went out to check on him, as was the little lady. She is actually pretty tall, and probably about a 2.5 and him a 3. I will get pictures tomorrow, the farrier is coming to do their feet. I gave them each some beet pulp mush and Farley moaned with delight as he dove into it. He has been used for childrens camps and lessons his entire life, and at one point you can tell he was a stocky little bugger. He is absolutely bomb proof, well built, shows no sign of lameness, and is SMART! He has a lot of life left in him, and deserves to have a job....He is asking all of you to find him a child, he loves children and follows my daughter all over the place!!! I CAN NOT KEEP THIS GUY, and promised he would only be here for a short while...so please, I know he is old, but please spread the word about him! He would be a great first pony for someone! He is probably about 14.3 and with some meat on him will be a good sized guy! He has a very calm demeanor to him, and has very wise eyes.....He is amazing! The Palomino (We are calling her Lilly), is a saucy mustang who will be gorgeous! She is so thin right now.......sooo sad, they were left behind like a piece of garbage.....makes me sick! I just couldn't leave Farley behind, I couldn't sleep last night....sigh****

Chel,
As one sucker to another - you rock! I wouldn't have been able to leave him behind either.
Send me pics and writeup. I'll make a poster and put it up at tack shops around here. Bombproof kids horses still have a market here - and I have a friend coming down next month with an open slot on a trailer.
I know it's a long shot - but what the heck - let's try!

Chel, you are not a sucker but a person who a huge heart who did the right thing. I know you need another horse like a hole in the head, but that's the way it is with most everything we "have." You know? What do we really need? Well, we need more people like you who are willing to take a risk and do what nobody else would do - step up and help. You will find Old Man Farley a home. I know you will. And keep working on Sara ... I think she wants Farley. Thank you for being brave.

Fartley, I mean Farley Is doing wonderful this morning, as is his lady Lilly. Thank you so much for the kind words, I was afraid that I would be killed.....but as most of you all know (Those of you who have been on the boards for awhile) my husband and family have a great tolerance for me. They know I won't ever walk away on an animal in need! I am going to go out and take their blankies off, hopefully I don't get turned in to animal control! It is really nice though, and they would love to roll in the sun! Will post pictures soon!

Fartley is colicing, he is responding well to the Banamine at this point. I have the vet on standby....The palomino got her footsies trimmed, now she's nice and balanced. Fartley will have to wait Fartleys penis is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen, I am going to go out and clean it. I was picking off some of the icky earlier and he loved it. It has about 3 inches of ick built up on it, and a huge glob on the end...His pee comes out sideways because of the build up....If he makes it through this, I will draw blood on him and take it in for a full large animal panel. I want to make sure everything is in good working order.....Poor old man, I just about died when I found him lying down this morning. He looked like he had given up....His breath was so sour I about gagged, I am thinking it's a combo of bad teeth (Impaction) and soured stomach....I put some pepto down him 2 times already, and now he's standing in the sun soaking up the rays and nibbling on grass.........jingle for the old man please!

Farley is doing much better, I gave him a tube of probiotics and cleaned his nasty sheath. It is the worse I have ever seen.....It takes A LOT to gross me out, I can talk about rotting carcasses while I'm eating and not even blink....this sheath made me queasy....he literally was peeing sideways it was soooo dirty. He had such a big bean in there, it's a wonder he could pee at all!

BIG HUGS from me! Love the old ones and special needs guys. The rescued and weaker ones k-n-o-w what a blessing it is and how very lucky they are. The world is a much better place for them than it was a few days ago.
Thanks so much for taking them both. . .and. . .caring for them until they find their next homes. Love the reports. I always read them. . .and. . .wish.

Thanks from me too Chel.. he already thought you were an angel, and getting that rock out of his wee wee no doubt solidified you as a saint... in his eyes.
he just isn't used to any food at all? you might use the UC Davis refeeding protocol... and give him only alfalfa... the nasty breath makes me worry... I'd use salt water and rinse his mouth too, you never know what is in there that might come out... (or just shove a garden hose in there) that will give him some water too... they usually slurp while rinsing. my old stallion used to love the mouth rinsing :-)

Farley is doing much better, he just doesn't like any of the feed I have offered....everything from senior, to alfalfa pellets to plain ol' oats. He is used to eating the all purpose crud grain...sigh....will have to start him slowly onto a good diet. He loves to pick out the alfalfa leaves out of hay, he thinks that is delightful!! Will try straight alfalfa in the am, see how he likes that.....Will also be rinsing his mouth out, but didn't want to induce any more stress on him today....I am sure he has some nice impacted feed in his mouth, which is the rank smell.....

Or an infected tooth, or an empty tooth pocket that's become impacted and infected! I've dealt with both with my older gals.
I'm glad he's doing better!

I have to say, Shel - If I had this guy I would get a vet out to at least get a good look in the mouth. Really horrible breath leads me strongly to figure he has something going on inside he mouth. I am NOT a fan of the UC DAVIS refeeding program - the reason??? If you read teh study, they tested a batch of horses on 3 things. Senior/Complete feed only, Alfalfa only, and oat hay only. NO GRASS HAY! So - IMO the study was in-complete. Of course of the three things that they used for refeeding, I would choose free fed alfalfa..... Shel - You might want to go ahead and put this kid on ulcerguard 2x per day for the next 14 days. I know it isn't cheap BUT - if he is starting to colic with a soured tummy this may help get him through it till his system can start adjusting to real food again. and, be careful with the pepto - it has acetomenephine(tylenol) and asprin in it. the asprin concerns me less, but the tylenol in larger doses can cause major liver problems. simple corn syrup can settle a stomach. The light Kayro given at around 20cc's given using a syringe orally or over food can help for a sick tummy. BUT - for full fledge colic, give a full tube of ulcerguard and banimane. If he is used to eating the crappy all stock feed- try mixing a small amount of that in with some plain crimped oats(easier to digest then whole) as well as some LIGHTLY soaked(just so that they aer softened but not mush) alfalfa pellets or cubes. Then, slowly wean him off of the crud grain and oats and get him onto a forage based diet. Take care, Sara
