Anyone able to help out in any way for our newest arrival, please let me know asap. Our skinny TB mare gave birth to a little colt, he looks about 4 weeks early, he is very small for her, and is skin and bones He has no fat. He got very cold on our sitter, and shocky. The vets have started his care and already we are at $1100, Iv line and iv fluids; plasma transfusion, antibiotics, Ng tube feeds,.He is trying so hard but just now at 12 hours doing the wobbly walk, and can only be under his own power for 4-5 min or so. q2hour feeds, or attempts to get him nursing, milking her (and she s so patient) and feeding him. We of course are not set up for winter foaling, and are scrambling, he is a sweetie and is trying so hard, If anyone is able to help in any way at all please contact me. We are calling him Chance, I will post a picture, soon, just ran home for a shower.... my 48+hour shift continues......

Will be jingling for the little guy and his mom. Why don't you post the vet clinic info so people can just call in to donate directly if they want to? I can do a very small amount, but maybe it will add up! Keep us posted.

This foal-saver blanket is amazing. I had two of them but (sadly) they went with the unpleasant ex-barn manager. www.sstack.comitem # 16012 it is stretchy and very soft/flexible and warm.

Is there anyone local who can help hands on with a feeding or two maybe? Livermore area, off Greenville & TeslaI know it's a long shot but I am asking. I am thinking we are on Q2 feeds now, he is doing better but still has no fat or muscle so can't get up and stay up to nurse, though he is trying. Mom is super easy to milk, sprays out 50ml easy with her let down.I can give the iv meds, he just needs help feeding, If we get through the next couple of days I think he will be ok, he is getting stronger and more coordinated. If anyone can help my number is 925-518-8987, the website is www.loneoakrescue.org if anyone can help with the fees, i appreciate all input and hep, thank you so much, Belinda

Going out again tonight, he is cute, but teeny, and still struggling, so any help with bills will make a big difference ya'll... I'm sure! He got to actually latch on a few times today, so things are looking better for him, but he's still guarded...

Hey guys - I'll give you my update from this morning....
Arrived at 4 planning to feed. He's apparently eaten really well at 3 and was totally sacked out and oblivious to my being there. Mama came to say, and then when I left for just a minute apparently decided since the baby sitter was here she was taking advantage and laid out flat for a nap.
At 5, they were both still sleeping and I was cold, so I laid down under the heat lamp with Chance. He snuggled up against me and put his head on my arm. And mama picked her head up, nickered, and put it on my shoulder.
Oh my God....I am in love with these two.
He ate pretty well for me when he finally decided to wake up and ask for his breakfast....Mya stood over me while I fed and nickered to him and helped to keep him awake.
He is a character and loves the attention. Mama Mya is so sweet and kind and patient and smart and gentle and calm. You'd think she was 15 or 20 on her 10th baby, not a maiden 4 year old mare.
I'm sure that Belinda could still use some help if anyone is local and willing. I'll get out there when I can but have a lot of stuff going on during the week for Guide Dogs on top of work.

The vet came to see him and all looks good so far, we just need to be sure he is gaining weight. I can get him to latch when he is hungry in the morning, but he is still operating on those wobbly legs so balance and coordination is the thing, but then he doesn't have a lot of reserve to stand / walk for a long time.He gets a repeat blood workup on Thursday ensuring he is in the right direction we will prob do some radio graphs to make sure they are good, but they are not too concerned at this time, no swelling or heat in the joints. Well time to go and check on him, will post pics tonight... after a nap!

Our little man had a very tough night.... I lost him at about 4 this morning, He died in his sleep laying beside me, He was only 5 days old, but he had my heart.... I loved my little guy Chance, and I hurt, but am thankful he does not. I do believe in horse heaven... so run and play my little man.... go find Toby and give him my love.

Fly ~ Celine Dion
Fly, fly little wing Fly beyond imagining The softest cloud, the whitest dove Upon the wind of heaven's love Past the planets and the stars Leave this lonely world of ours Escape the sorrow and the pain And fly again
Fly, fly precious one Your endless journey has begun Take your gentle happiness Far too beautiful for this Cross over to the other shore There is peace forevermore But hold this mem'ry bittersweet Until we meet
Fly, fly do not fear Don't waste a breath, don't shed a tear Your heart is pure, your soul is free Be on your way, don't wait for me Above the universe you'll climb On beyond the hands of time The moon will rise, the sun will set But I won't forget
Fly, fly little wing Fly where only angels sing Fly away, the time is right Go now, find the light

Sometimes no matter what you do, it's not meant to be. I'm sorry your heart is hurting.
It's unlikely, at this time of year, but could you offer the mare to Davis in case they have an orphan foal?

I went ahead and called Davis, but no, they don't have any foals at this time.

I went out this morning to say goodbye to Chance....thought I was okay and thankful he's not suffering until I got there. I think my tears covered his poor little face. But he looks peaceful now and I know he's in an much better place than this world will ever be.
Mya was quiet when I got there. I went to hug her and she wrapped me into a hug again with her head. Went to see her again after seeing the little guy...this time she smelled me and snorted and trotted to the other side of the paddock and hung her head for a while..... she did come back over. She and her sister are craving attention.

I can't believe that it's been said I didn't do the right thing...... wow, barely let his body get cold. I thought I was dealing with people who were helping because they cared about horses. I do not read other message boards, I am busy doing what i can with what I have. I do my best to prevent suffering and provide love and care. I did what I could for a mare and foal that were is a much worse situation, if he were born there he would have been born in the cold and mud and lay there for hours a slow death. Just because i did not take him to Davis does not mean I am not able to capable to help horses. Just because I do not have a fancy barn does not mean my horses do not have what they need. I can't believe this...... after such a hard struggle I get insulted to say i am not set up or capable to do rescue and I should surrender my mare so someone else can help her. I was on the phone with Davis shortly before I lost him, they would have done nothing more besides be in a fancy place and try and keep him hanging on til the last second and not likely change the outcome. Also he would have likely passed while on the road there. If I had known asking for help was the start of drama I would never have asked. I am not naming names, I am going to stay above that. Beth I will bring you your things, thank you for lending them to me. He did not use the blanket, I have washed the feed nipple. I am not into drama. I will now leave this board.

I am very disheartened that people have given you a bad time. You did everything possible for that baby and provided him with wonderful care. It is ridiculous that anyone would say you are at fault for not taking him to Davis. Gee, maybe they should have stepped forward to pay for the exhorbitant fees you would have incurred. Most of us do not have an endless money supply. Does that mean we should not rescue horses? Someone owes you an apology!
