I will also give $1 per month for each person that pledges ANY amount for a continuous 6 months. Anyone want to match it?
I also want to add that Caly runs her own cat rescue and is very experienced! Every dollar donated will be itemized and accounted for.

rough est: $230 pasture board where my girls are $8 wormer ($15 every other month) $15 vax (2X year, full Davis recommended series~$90 each time including vet exam) $45 trims - I'm pricing this for every month. I hope she'll do well barefoot, but if not, shoes are $100. So the $45 a month sort of splits the difference. Her feet need help still. $50 grain (incl supplements and vitamins - cutiepiepmu would be the one calling these shots) $150 hay (yes, ours is expensive!) Total = ~$500/month minimum. If we can keep her in Oregon, I think we could get more bang for our buck.....example: $150 Board - includes hay 50 Grain/Supps 25 Trim ($75 Shoes) 8 Wormer 15 Vax $248 Total-minimum monthly costs +250 Training (Optional of course, but someone needs to put the groundwork on her, and I can't!) $498 Total We have $250 pledged by PEC, $20 from Toeps, I can do $30, so we have $300 a month pledged so far. WendyP/Bend, OR MTA - This would only be for the first 2 months, then hopefully she would be ready to go to Dean to be finished. I don't know what Dean's charges would be at that point................

Hi everyone,
I've been offline all afternoon - out visiting Diva! (She's doing great!)
I've had no phone calls or emails from this mare's owner since early this morning. We'd been email great up until then, so I'm not sure what happened.
So...we wait.....
I've talked with Wendy and the mare would stay with her for two months. I sent an email to the owner and gave her Wendy's contact info. So, now we wait.

I like your attitude toeps!!
I will be working out the details with the owner later this morning.
I got a match from the Jockey Club, so will be posting that information later as well.
Wendy had graciously offered to be the intial care-giver so I'm hooking the two of them up so we can work out the transfer details.
We still need more sponsership, so if you can hit up your freinds - even small amounts add up.
I'm running right now, but will set up the Team thread in a bit. From some odd reason, clients expect me to actually show up and do work in order to get paid. Imagine that!
So - if y'all can work on increasing the funding for this mare in the meantime, that would be great.
Thanks!!

I read this thread with growing dismay... why would you spend this kind of money on this kind of project... when you could save a half a dozen horses from slaughter or more for the same price... and all this off e-mails? Has anyone 'seen' this horse? There are so many red flags here, not to mention the artificial 'dead-line' being imposed by the 'oh so concerned' owners... "get it off the lot today or the nag gets the needle! " Apply some healthy skepticism here.
I re-schooled my first racing TB in 1969 and the most recent one is watching the back door waiting for dinner, and I'm here to tell you - they do not all turn out well, sound or even safe. I read post after post by people with good intentions but no idea what it takes to re-hab or re-school a race horse or rescue horse, now begging to be bailed out, because it was way more than they expected in terms of money and time and skill. I suggest you find someone experienced in re-training race horses and a good farrier and have them evaluate this one before you sign on the dotted line and if the owner cant' wait for that- then pass. Oh, by the way racing QH's are still race horses, I don't for a minute buy the idea that no one in Bend could deal with this horse..

Caly has an OTTB and is aware of what this mare needs. She has talked to the owners extensively and all this horse needs is a chance with someone who does have experience. This is not a shot in the dark - it's a horse that needs us or it will get a bullet to the head. No threats. Fact. The owner is not using this as drama factor, she CANNOT care for this horse, She admittedly does not have the experience to give her the best home possible.

If a horse is breathing, not in pain it deserves a chance.
I have re-trained hundreds. Mostly it's just a miscommunication between horse/rider/trainer. A horse is just a horse and you can trust them to be just that.

Since this mare was not in a kill pen, and not at an auction - did she not deserve a chance?
mta: "I read post after post by people with good intentions but no idea what it takes to re-hab or re-school a race horse or rescue horse, now begging to be bailed out, because it was way more than they expected in terms of money and time and skill. "
This is exactly what happened to this mare. Her life was spared at the auction - her current owner has recognized she doesn't have the skills/resources to do right by her and she is willing to put her down rather than put her back into the slaughter pipeline.
Whether or not this turns out to be a "good save" will depend on what we find out when we get her - just as if we'd bought her at an auction.

Have to agree, if breathing, not in pain, every horse deserves a chance. With networking, this can become a positve outcome. Wish we could offer some assistance too, but we are stretched.... with a waiting list. Thanks, Calypso for getting the ball rolling for this girl....

Okay, I have retyped this response three times trying not to sound bitchy............but....I started out being defensive, then I deleted that, and tried to be diplomatic- but Caly already did that, deleted that, and just decided to be pissed...........so here goes.............
cwinterburn, if you don't want to help, then don't. But if everytime someone tries to help a horse, they get beat down by people on this list, then the purpose of this list has been lost. Rescuing is about saving horses - any horse that anyone wants to save.
Dang, it's getting hard to participate on this list.............

You might get help w/ground training from some of the mustang folks - we're heavy into groundwork. That's what I enjoy doing most. IMO, very few horses have the level of ground training I aspire to for my horses. A week w/Wilhelm and three Jerry Tindell clinics have shown me what's possible and there's no going back. Many of the mustang crowd have been to these same types of clinics. It's worth a try. LOL Anne I am with you there. My horses have done tons of ground work and it is FUN! it has made a huge difference in how they interact with other people too. Mustangs and mules see each and every person as an individual.. They can be very different depending on who and how they are approached.

I am either picking Rosie up tomorrow (if there isn't any snow!) or Thursday. I will definitely keep you all posted. The owner is being very thorough - she has asked for pictures of my place, if the mare will have other horses around, and since we know some of the same people (from showing dogs) she may inquire with them about my reputation! I feel like I have applied for the adoption of a human child! I am more than happy to comply, and even happier that she is being so careful. I know some of you are skeptical, but she is genuinely concerned for the welfare of this mare. Her 14 year old daughter is very upset that the mare is leaving - I went thru this when our daughter was 13 and she had a gelding that was too much for her. My daughter, Kelli, wouldn't ride Raz, but she didn't want me to sell him either. Makes Mom's life miserable, but the welfare of the child comes first.
Thank you Dean! and everyone else who is helping with this mare. I hope to have some great pics and an assessment for you all this weekend. I will start some groundwork - I have limited skills, but am pretty good at grounddriving, so we'll see how she is with ropes. I have a trainer lined up to come work with her on any groundwork problems, as soon as we can afford to do that. She will need awhile to just settle in, so I'm sure everything will fall into place...........

Thank you Wendy for taking on her day-to-day care! Thank you Dean for being first in line to pledge $$ support - and for being the first to get it to me! Thank you Donna & Wendy & Heidi for helping with the $$. I will start a blog for her, and post her story and opening pics. I'll post the link as soon as it's up. Her owner has been very good to work with. I appreciate her for being willing to take the hard road - even if it meant euth - to make sure this girl didn't end up in a bad place. Thank you Hytyme for offering a way-station for her while we were working out the details. I'm glad Wendy can take her for the first couple months so the owner and daughter can come see if her they like and assure themselves that's she's doing well. Mta: missed Heidi's support on this list before!
