I got to meet Kaleigh's cute little filly today. She is so cute and so full of energy. She is going to keep her mom and Caly on their toes. Here are some pictures taken this afternoon: edited to correct spelling :-) we need to find an easier to spell name for the baby.

So, do we think she's a TB?

She's out there thinking. . ."What to do next? Where to run? Whoopie. . .wind in my mane. . . in my tail. . . I'm faster than the wind! Hey, mom, look at me go! These long legs get me places fast! What do you mean I've got other speeds???"

I do. I think Caly traced her back to her breeder's family.........odds on a TB is her Daddy.

agilitygal - LOL!!! Ain't that the truth!!
Nancik - well, she doesn't look like a mule. Although when she was first emerging with that huge head we wondered. Even after she was out - wet - those long ears still draped back down her neck...there was some speculation. But, once she was up and her ears were up and we saw that ALL of her was long..."it's a horse".
I think she's probably a TB. Don't know if we could tell if she was a WB at this point. But...I also don't know how much WB breeding is done in the area she came from. So, we're going to call her a TB until proven otherwise.
She thinks she's a BIG horsey. She went out on the baby pasture with her mom and the other mare and baby yesterday. She kept trying to nibble grass just like K. But, her neck is too short (or as Jeanne pointed out - her legs are TOO long!) to reach without really stretching her front legs out. Or to the side. Or SOMETHING! She tried it all. Hysterical. You can just see the wheels turn. She's a smart cookie. Her mom is too. But, where K is easy-going, the baby...well...... isn't. LOL!
Working on the "barn name" first - gotta have something to call her NOW. Jeanne says she's going to call her Lexus or Porche until I came up with a name for her!
Alexis - nickname Lexi Anastasia (Resurrection) - nickname Sassy Felicity (happy) Brianna (strong)
I like "strong" but she doesn't really seem like a Brianna to me.
I've named over 100 cats in the past couple years and am constantly told "oh that name just fits that cat" so I'm optomistic I'll come up with something. I always say, it's almost as if they already have a name, and you just have to wait until it comes to you.

Added - yes, I did get her ID from the Jockey Club and a chance encounter at a horse sale between her last registered owner (the one who raced her) and someone I know led to a lot of filling in the blanks. She went through 2 other people before she hit the lot. We don't know who she was bred to, but there is some speculation based on where she was. She had a caslick so it is unlikely it was a random breeding. More likely they didn't think she took, hence the lot. There are some holes in her history. I don't know if she came to the lot directly or via auction. The cover was not registered so daddy is an unknown. (explanation for non-TB people: In order to register a TB, the breeding has to be live cover and carried to term - no artificial insemination, no surrogates. So, mom and dad have to "meet" and mom has to birth the baby. The "meeting" has to be witnessed by a bunch of people including a vet who has to sign off on it. Stallion owners are required to register the mares their studs have, er, "met" each year by August 1. When K's registered name is entered in the data base, nothing comes up.)
It doesn't matter - both K and her baby have their home with me.

It doesn't matter - both K and her baby have their home with me. This, of course, being the most important point... Stay tuned to this thread, I will soon be posting a short .avi of Lexi. (This is what aunt jen will call her for now).

I've got another cute one to post. They take forever to upload even on a super fast T-1 connection.
Stay tuned!
MTA: I committed the cardinal sin of photography for some of the shots. I did not have the sun to my back, so the glare takes away some of the brightness. Sorry!

I'm going to continue the updates here until I figure out how to (and make the time to) integrate all her threads. The baby is growing like a weed!! She's a handful! If anyone checked into the foalcam yesterday late afternoon they were probably quite amused to watch the little rodeo. The baby (still not "offically" named yet, although I told her that I was going to call her 'Brat') is very curious. I was standing inside the stall and drop my hand out and call her. She came repeatedly for sniffs and scritches. She's particularly partial to butt-scritches. So is her mom right now...but that is a different story. The baby is gumming the grass out on the pasture and it's made her stools a little loose. So, since she was being such a good girl Jeanne and I decided to wash her bum. HAH! She knew something was up and refused to come. We cornered her, she evaded, Jeanne grabbed and came up lucky. I grabbed the bucket and started washing. She hopped and kicked and wriggled. That little sucker is strong! And willfull!!! But she met her match in willfullness in Jeanne and she did not lose her grip! Of course the fact that we were both laughing at her antics and what a spitfire she is didn't help! I am usually pretty good at getting out of the way, but I am sporting two impressive bruises on my thigh this morning. She let fly with both barrels and got a lucky shot in. Dang - I forgot how much it hurts to get kicked by the little twirps LOL!! I guess now I can say I've truely returned to horses. Once the bum-washing was done we did some more gentling and then let her go. She let fly with a buck or two (just to show us!! ;D) and then went a hid behind her mom. I let her take a little nap, then resumed my calling her and offering her my hand. She was having no part of it. But, after a bit she let me approach and put my arms around her and scritch her butt. "oh yeah...I like this...I guess you ARE okay after all" It's such a balance between gaining their trust/respect and getting things done that need doing. I enjoy that aspect of working with unhandled feral cats too. This baby is a handful - she keeps us laughing in amazement and amusement constantly. Kaleigh is still a strict mom, but she's relaxed a little bit. When the baby is romping and bucking around she no longer nips her 100% of the time. She seems to have learned that babies need to play. However, I did see her discipline the baby at one point...and the baby sidled up to her mom butt-to-butt and kicked out at her. Pure display of insolence! She didn't connect, so K ignored her. Cracks me up!! On the other hand, she is such a happy baby! Positively joyous! Just very independent - "DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!!!" LOL!

The baby still continues to entertain.... Yesterday morning K and baby are being led out of the barn to the mare/baby pasture. "George" a very nice, big, slightly neurotic, warmblood gelding is in crossties at the farrier station being attended to. K is being led past the station and out the door with baby trotting along behind. So far, a normal morning. But. Baby sees George and makes an immediate detour. She scampers under George and tries to nurse. Meanwhile K starts to get excited, calling her disobedient daughter and explaining to the poor groom at the end of the lead rope that they have to go That Way Right Now! Baby ignores K and scampers back and forth under George's belly while poor George stands frozen except for a little tilting of the head to try to see what the heck is going on under his belly!! Groom gets K shoved in a stall before she kicks the cr*ap out of poor innocent George! He then retrieves disobedient daughter, then K, and then resumes the march to the pasture. Who needs TV when you've got animals!!

There were a couple of foals on this board over the last few years that had the same markings. There was much discussion about the markings. Over time, however, they outgrew those markings and became "normal". There are horses, however, with those markings and there is a name for them. . .but, can't remember anything about that!

Just a couple right now... This one was taken on Saturday - her one month birthday. See how big she's getting? She's standing in front of me, and I'm 5'8. I thought this was funny. She was just yawning, but it looks like she's about to bite her mom. Captures her personality perfectly! Yesterday the moms and babies were on the pasture. Baby wanted to play so she kept "inviting" Baron to play. As soon as he'd accept, she'd whirl around and buck out at him. Way to win friends girl! We're trying Vixen as a name right now...mostly cause "Little Sh*t" probably can't be registered. She has beautiful movement (according to Jeanne who knows so much more than I do about such things - plus, let's face it - I'm biased!)
