Wow, I am soooo behind in updates. I'll update today's pics and then go back and fill in. Little Lexi is growing like a weed! She's losing her baby coat right now, so she looks a little ratty. The coat coming in is the same color as Kaleigh, so (except for the white on her face) she's gonna look just like her mom!! BIG Yawn!!! (and, yes I realize Kaleigh looks like she's going to have another baby any minute!!) Nap time! From L->R Kaleigh, Lexi, Baron, Cece. The palomino behind is Karma (and her foal, Danny)

Yeah, CeCe and Kaleigh seem to have negotiated some kind of detente. (using their hooves!) CeCe is an alpha mare, and when they were first turned out together she used to "roundpen" K and Lexi around the pasture, just because she could. Last week I was giving K some carrots. CeCe came up and since her ears were forward, I allowed her to approach. They each took a few carrots and sniffed noses between each snack. Nice and peaceful. But, once the carrots were gone, CeCe pinned her ears (probably at ME LOL!) I waved her away, so she turned to leave. In a display of incredibly poor judgment, K went after her and gave her a big bite on the butt. CeCe responded by bucking out at her 5-6 times, connecting once. In a further display of idiocy, Kaleigh turned and bucked back at her a bunch of times. Now, picture this - Kaleigh is 15.2+ and CeCe is 11.3. Thankfully, due to this, they didn't connect with each other. Of course I'm yelling at both of them. The babies are all freaked out running around the fight trying to figure out how to get close to mom without getting kicked. (doncha LOVE herd dynamics) Finally CeCe turns and bolts. Kaleigh takes off after her and chases her (and Baron) clear across the width of the pasture (with Lexi by her side), and with me in hot pursuit. A little more yelling - and separating them - and peace reigned again. Since then they've been best buddies.

More pics from today.... We've been taking pics of her standing in front of me since the night she was born. The comparison helps show how she's growing. I'm scritching Lexi while telling Baron to mind his manners "OH NO!! Don't HUG me!! One of my friends might see!!!" "Oh well, okay, as long as you hit the right itchy spot." (Don't you love that babies are so itchy - it really helps them get used to being manhandled LOL!!!) A little snuggling with Kaleigh Kaleigh and Lexi having a little evening snack. (Isn't it gorgeous up there?)

More pics from Saturday... The valley faces the coast, although it is still quite a distance away. Nevertheless, sometimes the fog rolls in and it's just beautiful. Yesterday was one of those days. L-R: Jack (in blanket), Kaleigh, Lexi, Beau (in paddock behind - he "watches over" the girls and their babies and gets QUITE upset when the go down the hill out of his sight), Karma (palamino mare), CeCe and Baron (both chestnut, & hard to see, but they're there), Danny (Karma's boy)

Updated pics from June 10th. She was 3 months on June 14th and measured a little over 11 hands on the 10th. Kaleigh is learning to be a more demonstrative mom. I see her nuzzling and giving scritchies to the baby. Not so much ear pinning. For those who remember CeCe and Baron, who was born 3 days before Lexi and shared the foal cam for quite awhile. Baron and Lexi have become good buds. Last night I watched them race each other around the pasture. Lots of joyous bucking and rearing. They have a lot of fun together!

A couple weeks ago I received some pictures from the night she was born. Someone else was looking at them before I got a good look when she asked "what's that written on the baby's side?" "huh?" "Here. It looks like it says Diva" "What? Let me see" Sure enough....(although in this post the V isn't as clear) Weird, eh? There were several pictures like this. My friend Gail was with me and laughed and said "maybe that's her name - it would sure fit" thinking of her sometimes pushy and demanding demeanor. We laughed...but when I got home I looked up Diva and here's what I found on wikipedia: "The term was originally used to describe a woman of rare, outstanding talent. It derives from an ancient Italian word meaning "goddess," which, in turn derives from the feminine form of a Latin word divus, meaning "divine one. Often today "diva" is used to describe an extremely independent and talented woman." So what do you think? Is her name Diva? or Lexus (Lexi)?

I'm sorry, Caly, but I'm pretty sure that when a baby is born with her name actually written on her side, you are kinda stuck with it! LOL1 I've never seen anything like it! I do think this little girl is Diva Divine!

Yeah, it's pretty funny isn't it! I still can't figure out how it happened - none of us noticed it that night.
We'd been tossing around "In the Spotlight" for her "Official" name based on her tendancy to be found sleeping right in the spot when she was still in the stall and on the foalcam. And...where do you usually find a Diva? ...In the spotlight. heh heh
Wish I'd taken screen caps of her sleeping in the spot. Did anyone else?

Diva In The Spotlight
cvl - you were the one. Here's your post from the morning after she was born..."Yahooooiee Kaleigh! & Congratulations Caly ~~ she is adorable! Any names yet? My vote: "In the Spotlight" - because everytime I checked the cam this a.m.- she was standing right there in the light. She looked like she was on stage! '

More pics.... The relationship between Kaleigh and her baby (now named Diva) is evolving into something really sweet. When the baby was younger, Kaleigh was really strict and pissy with her. Now she's very nuturing. It's been really interesting to watch it change. This was Kaleigh's first baby, and I think watching the other mares with their babies has been instructive. Diva keeps growing and growing! We measured her a week ago - 11.2 at 3 months old. I think she's going to be a big girl! We've been taking pictures of her standing in front of me (usually wearing the same sweatshirt) since the night she was born in order to show her growth. Here is the one from today! That is Baron (born 3 days before Diva) trying to "help" in the background! He and Diva are buddies. Much to his chagrin she can run circles around him! Diva with her other buddy, Danny. Her ears are back - they usually are when Danny is around! Yes, it's getting dry up there. A little mother/daughter discussion Awww... She really has to turn her head to get down in there!

More pics from today.... Diva shares her mom's enthusiasm for food... And naps... Check out the belly. Too bad all my animals are so malnourished, eh? She's growing like a weed! Over 12 HH now. Pretty soon I won't need the sweatshirt to mark her progress. She's going to hide me completely! Check out how much she's grown since the last pic in front of me. Kaleigh demands equal time (but sadly, didn't get many pics of just her alone!) Here she is showing off her greatest skill.... Mom and baby with me. They aren't too bad to lead together. (they aren't too good either.... ) Seconds after that last pic was taken, Kaleigh leaned over and BIT her daughter!! I guess she caught Diva's ear-pinning out of the corner of her eye. My little baby is growing up. Her baby mohawk mane has grown out to the point where it lays down now, like a big horse-y mane! I wish I could just freeze time for a little bit. They are babies for such a short time!

she is soo cute!
I've only had Trevor (macmuffin) for about a month now, but I just love the baby. He is so snuggly when he wants to be, and such a brat at times. It's hard to keep in mind that they are still a horse, and to not let them get away with being cute.....
Good Job with them. You all look like a happy family :-)
