I was at work tonight just surfing and came across this site... with the title: $150 for a bullet, and other CBER fairy tales! needless to say it got my attention. I hope the general public does not get the impression that all rescue organizations are the same as a pretty ugly picture is painted here. I do not know who the author is but the web site is fuglyhorseoftheday.blogspot.com/2009/01/150-for-bullet-and-other-cber-fairy.htmlfacts or not I don't know.... but the pictures tell their own story.

I should not have kept reading, someone else added another article from the past www.angelfire.com/planet/truthaboutcber/I so don't want to believe all the bad things I am reading but it does remind me why I rescue the few I can and am how grateful for my girl Maggie(CBER mahogany)

Not a fan of fugly personally (jmho). For more information regarding CBER, I recommend the other threads in this topic. There are many statements by respected volunteers that have changed my opinion of the CBER organization ( president and at least one BOD ). Most of the volunteers are just trying to help horses and are unaware of what is going on behind the scenes.
Will always be grateful for my 2 CBER kids and all of the horses that CBER has and continues to save. With the bad, comes some good, at least.

I love fugly & have found her to be right on the money 99% of the time. She is a straight shooter, no BS, life isn't rainbows & unicorns unfortunately. Horse rescue seldom is..feedlot rescue never is. Cat is a very knowledeable horsewoman & tell it like it is. Had cber not done every single thing she mentioned they woudln't be on her blog. I have the checks, the copies of all the kickbacks Dave paid directly to Sam. To say that I was pissed, horrified & competely betrayed is a complete understatement.

I was a volunteer for about 3 years, and I am very sad to say, Cathy was correct on everything in her blog, and she only scraped the tip of the iceberg. The "kick-backs" Sam gets add to the price of every horse saved...that means more donors having to scrape their last pennies while they and their families go without, all for money that did NOT go to cber, put went secretly to Sam personally. She kept this a secret from BoD and volunteers. It also means when there weren't enough funds to save every horse, horses shipped to slaughter because of Sam's added kick-backs. And what about what Heidi and other first hand witnesses have said many times. She adds way more that $150 on many horses. I used to beg her to talk to Chuck, to get him to lower the ridiculously high prices. She either refused or said she had already tried. The truth is, it wasn't Chuck's prices, it was what Sam was adding on. Sometimes $300-$400 extra, because she could get away with it. There are witnesses to this. IT IS NOT A LIE, A HALF-TRUTH, OR A TWISTING OF ANYTHING. NONE of what has come out about CBER is. The people claiming that is all a lie and so unfair, yadda yadda....are people that do not know, have not been there. What has been, and is happening, with CBER/Sam is wrong on so many levels. We are not trying to hurt the horses...Sam is doing that all on her own. Just because Shelley is "President", it means nothing. Nothing has changed. Sam had made myself, Stacie (mickeyfan3), Jen, and Tasha BoD about 2 years ago. When we tried to make it policy to NOT return horses to the feedlot, Sam refused. Know what? We couldn't do it, because as Sam told someone at the time, we were there to deflect blame, do the work, and she was never going to change the paperwork, because she didn't want anything to change. We weren't BoD, never were. Look up the paperwork. The BoD is the same as 2006. Shelley, Kathy, Diane, and the other one (can't think of the names) are not BoD. Sam is president. Always will be. Can you guys even imagine Sam giving Shelley control of the CBER checking account and paypal account? Riiiight..... She wouldn't even let Wendy have access. BS. Ever donate tack to CBER? Lots of people and companies did. There were piles of shipping boots, blankets, and much much more. We, the volunteers, wanted to sell it as a fundraiser, donate some to adopters taking the harder to care for horses as a thank you, etc. Guess what happened to it? Sam and Jeff (the pedophile and cat-killer) took it to the auction. They had a friend (different Shelly) sell it under her name, and they pocketed the cash. Is that really what the donors had in mind? Did that really help CBER? They kept that a secret from the "BoD" and volunteers, too. Sam is full of secrets. And because of this, nothing will ever change, no matter who is volunteering, who Sam says is BoD, etc. Nothing changes, because the person in charge is not in it for the horses. She may have been a long time ago, but with all the crap she has pulled, not a chance now. All you new people....think she doesn't have secrets from you, tell you what you want to hear, or fill you full of lies to spread defending her? Then you deserve what you get, just like I did. The horses don't deserve it though. Anyway, sorry about the rant. I just found it ridiculous that they are trying to claim that the facts that are coming out are not true, made up by pro-slaughter people that do nothing for horses. For what it is worth, look at the statistics on horses saved. Since Sam has gotten really bad, their numbers have dropped by 50%. Between SoS, the individual saves on the RO bb, and HLH, they have exceeded CBER's numbers. So yeah, the people saying these things about CBER ARE doing something for the horses. They just aren't ripping people off, sending horses to slaughter, or giving grade horses into half-assed breeding programs, to do it. Btw, I would have posted this on CBER's bb, but they won't approve my acount. Go figure.

Shawna said $50 per horse, cash, under the table for every horse placed. that is of course in addition to the CBER 'fee' of varying amounts from $150 to $400 or more... There are written reciepts from one feedlot showing the kickbacks to her.
mta: hit send while typing... finished my sentance...

Hi Kelly, From Dave, Sam received $50/horse. Even after Leosolis completely split from cber and founded SoS, Sam still tried to get those kick-backs from Dave. How unbelievably presumptious. RE the Walker lot, based on witnesses that saw Chucks price book, those that bought CBER listed horses from Chuck, or got Chuck's prices on CBER listed horses quoted from him, anywhere from $100 to $400+ was added, depending on what she thought the horse would bring in the CBER market. Several people that have seen Chucks price book stated that nothing was over $300. This is above and beyond the the added CBER fee. This quickly turns a leggy, thin, but nice TB from a $300 horse into an $800 horse, then add in $300 qt, hauling fees, etc. So yeah, think it is safe to say that Sam isn't as broke as most of her donors end up.

Michele, I can feel the sadness (yes, mixed with the anger) in your post. You, along with Heidi and so many others, stuck by CBER through hell. I am sad for all the pain you have gone through.
I have kept my mouth shut through all of this. In a post that has now been archived, someone mentioned Kelly D. and me, saying that it is people like us who by keeping our mouths shut are not helping the situation. She is so right. I am embarrassed and shameful for not voicing my opinions and experiences. I feel like a chicken sh*t, and I am so sorry. I have watched as others have screamed from the mountaintops and either not been heard or been shamed or demeaned (by CBER) for speaking up. I know if Sam reads this, she will be shocked. She sees me as a #1 supporter. But I do not support CBER any longer. You all know I left a while back, and you were probably shocked. It was not just for a little break, but out of disgust and disagreement for how this "rescue" is being handled. I also think I have remained quiet as somehow in my little pea brain, speaking up somehow devalued all the precious horses I have taken in or adopted from CBER. I know that doesn't make sense, but that is how I felt. I have felt by questioning CBER I was questioning the lives of my horses. (I know ... it makes no sense.)
I wish my friendship and alliances with those at CBER could affect change - I wish my knowledge and impressions were strong enough that they would listen and act. But CBER today is not CBER of 2005. It has changed completely.
I read the blog post Cathy (www.fuglyhorseoftheday.com) made about CBER the day she made it. I left it up for Sally to read. I was crying when she came in the house, and she asked why. I told her to read what was up on the computer. She turned red and started screaming, "THIS IS FRAUD! YOU CANNOT TAKE MONEY FROM PEOPLE FOR A SINGLE INTENTION (to spare a horse from slaughter), SEND THE HORSE TO SLAUGHTER, AND KEEP THE MONEY!" She was irate. Cathy did not write the whole story about Maple. Sally and I offered to take Maple for life when she was on the feedlot. She reminded me so much of Gary Luther (CBER Bourbon who Heidi and Ryan, through tears, begged Sam to list 24 hours before the truck came and we adopted) that I knew Maple would have a safe, healthy, loving home here. It was only recently that I learned she shipped to slaughter, despite being paid for and given our home offer. I still feel sick and don't know how to get past my anger and feelings of despair.
I think it is interesting that a horse rescue stationed on a feedlot is pro-slaughter, but it makes perfect sense if the intention is to make money.
Another interesting thought is this: Remember the recent domestically bred Kiger geldings listed through CBER that I was asked to help find homes for? I had well over 20 home offers within about two hours of putting the word out. I heard from people all over the nation who were willing to get in their trucks and drive to pick up the horses. When they learned the protocol, they were distrustful, disgusted, and bowed out. Some even stopped communicating with me (even though I was clear that I was not involved with CBER). Those two geldings, without bail paid or homes, were pulled off the lot per Chuck's request; he knew a good thing when he saw it (i.e., so many interested parties = $$$$). These are two very young, unbroke horses. Well, Nemo and Basil, two ridable, well-trained horses, shipped to slaughter. What if Nemo and Basil could have been bought at auction by someone other than Chuck/Wayne/Sam, like a family? What if Chuck/Wayne/Sam outbid someone else and those horses died horrible, inexcusable deaths because of this "rescue?" I am not suggesting this happened, but what if it did and does? If Sam is going to the auctions, picking and choosing the horses she wants Chuck and Wayne to buy for her to list, she cannot place them under the emergent "The truck is coming!" fear tactic, then they ship to slaughter.
I am so tired of watching this go on. I wish it would stop. I wish Sam would see that she is no longer doing what she started doing in the beginning. This seems to be all about money and less about the horses (even though the impression given to the public is that it is all about saving horses). You know, we all need money to live. We are all struggling through these hard times. It is no less difficult for anyone, especially those of us whose income depends on the real estate market. But to turn horse rescue into horse trading and still call it rescue is not acceptable. Something needs to change.

Some of you many remember Terryn from two years ago. Because she is registered and I have her papers + a bill of sale, I was able to find out many things about her. She was sold at the fall Hermiston auction for $200.00 Her "fee" from CBER was $725.00 + pull fees and (pay pal fees???). She ended up staying for 4 months before she was cleared to come home. I did talk to the vet several times during this period of time. I did get a sound horse that is the love of my life, but she was VERY expensive. I don't regret any of the money that was spent on her. It does make me very angry that during the time she was up there and beyond, I continued to donate for horses that either shipped or died later because they went back to the feed lot. That is a betryal of trust that I personally will NEVER forgive.

One of my CBER horses was actually *GIVEN* to Chuck. Folks were at the lot that time and Chuck wanted $200 for the horse... but I was told by Sam that I had to wait until the horse was listed through CBER and then I had to pay about $800 for it. I have talked to the previous owners on several of my CBER horses and this seems to be a trend... I guess I understand now why CBER never wanted folks to contact past owners.

I too, worked my a$$ off for 2 years. Staunchly defended CBER and accused former volunteers of being off their rockers, jealous, spiteful, and very creative in making things up. I was spending so much time trying to keep horses safe and dig out the truth about everything that had been happening I was putting my own health in jeopardy.
When Heidi left I began to question to question things myself while still working to save horses. Heidi is someone I trust and respect who will tell you the truth, whether you want to hear it or not. I began to notice inconsistancies in what Sam told me compared to what she told others. I began to notice that I was always told what I wanted to hear. Nothing is rosy 100% of the time yet that was what I was being fed.
When I learned about Maple I was sick to my stomach......While we were told by Chuck that Deb returned that mare to Chucks it was made clear that Sam knew and approved of it. There was NO excuse for Maple to have been returned. She was paid for AND had a home offer. She wasn't going to be a "burden" on Sam as a CBER supported horse. Unfortunately it was never brought up to us "BOD" members so that we could have stopped it. We were all told that Maple had been "placed" by Sam. Yeah, she was placed alright. Right on the truck.
Same thing with Aqua Bay. We were all told by Sam that he had a home offer in New Mexico, but I, and others, tried to call this supposed adopter to confirm after we'd been told he'd been placed to check on his status, etc. The man doesn't exist. We could find no trace of him. The phone number we were given was not valid.
That was another issue I had. Caryn and I were supposedly Application Co-Directors (Caryn was on break at this point) yet Sam would sell a horse to the first person that showed up at her place with cash. I was told "don't worry, they're great people" and although I persisted my complaints fell on deaf ears. No horse should have been adopted out without at minimum: Personal references (non-relatives), vet reference and farrier reference - including "would you trust this person with one of your YOUR animals?" and after they were assured that their answers were completely confidential, site check whenever possible and if worse came to worse, pics and description of their property which was then verified with the references, vet and farrier included. No system was perfect, but if someone was willing to pay $800 for a horse, pay to ship it to them, pay for QT, pay for vet/farrier care while in "QT" and everything added up, then it was worth it and much better than the alternative. From what I've been able to tell all of the horses that Caryn and I placed that way are in good homes. We sought to improve and toughen the approval process all the time, as much as possible. I don't know how or where the horses placed to the first person showing up at Sam's are doing whose adopters "bypassed" the app department completely. I'm sure some are fine - others.....probably ended up the same or worse.

AQUA BAY: She was in the group of horses that I helped bail. She had hives & was herd bound to her friend, Sweet Pea. In this group, there were several horses I personally bailed. I even got a dear friend of mine to pitch in $200, along with my $250 to save Aqua Bay. I told sam that I loved this horse & she assured me that Aqua Bay would be safe, since I bail so many horses in this group. Now, I find out that Aqua Bay was betrayed!! Was sent to a very gruesome death & for what? For blood $$! I am so livid right now! Like AmyJo, I was afraid to speak out against cber. My fears are that I will feel so guilty if cber folds. Guilty that innocent horses on up-chuck's kill lot will not have a second chance to live. That's what scares me. I have another story to tell you too. But, I need to calm down first.

I can think of 3-4 people off hand that are local to the Yakima area, that are in it for the horses, that would fill in any vacuum left in CBER/Sam's absence. Heidi is one that I would trust to do the right thing, for one. There are others that have left/disassociated themselves with Sam over the years as well. The horses would be better off in the long run. I really do believe this.

I believe the answer is the $$. If Sam/CBER is gone, would he turn down the $$ because of his loyalty and close personal friendship with Sam? Riiight. He (Chuck) has already stated to others in his same business that he got the short end of the deal, having to work with Sam/CBER. He isn't as enchanted with her as they lead people to believe.

Sarah and I have always wondered how Forever came to be injured in one eye. It wasn't mentioned in the pre-purchase vet exam. I heard from someone that Zesty and Forever were in the same pen as a horse called Miss Dee and that they were both kicked by her. QT should be one to a pen??? There were at least three in that pen. When we picked her up there were more horses in the pen with her.

Zesty was in her last week of QT. I wonder what ever happened to Miss Dee.

When we picked her up, Forever was on the non-QT side. Miss Dee was pointed out to us and I remember asking if she was the horse that kicked Zesty? For horses that "needed" to be in QT, they sure came out early. We were delayed picking Forever up, but she still had only been there 5 weeks.

I think there are many people ( and elsewhere ) in that area that have no idea where there horses are going when sold to Up Chuck. I know for fact that he tells them he works with an adoption group and they'll try and give the horse a good home.
Up Chuck has charged $50.00 to $125.00 to pick a free horse up!
My thoughts:
Advertised heavily in that area as to what he is doing and educated more on slaughter. Beat him to the punch and try placing these horses BEFORE they end up on his lot or auction.
Go to the auctions, watch Craig's List, read ads. Call or e-mail and talk ( Nicely, it does make a difference ) and encourage the seller to not sell at auction. Let them know what a Kill Buyer is.

I was a long time supporter of CBER as well, but started feeling very uncomfortable a few years ago myself, in fact after spending a weekend at Camelot, meeting several BOD's at the time, I could easily see who was in it for the "horses" and who was not. I left this board soon after that because it was a CBER board. The horror of the discovery of the horses being bailed by the kind, loving supporters and walked out the front gate of the FL to only be brought back thru the back gate spelled the end for me. All of the money, tears and support of these horses who were so cruely betrayed and either shot, or put back on the slaughter trucks makes me physically ill. Every one of us who donated to these horses were an unknowing partner in their demise, and that sickens me. Heidi is the one and only I ever trusted also, no matter who the PS was I only wanted contact with her when I adopted Sione. About "Chuck", my only opinion is he HATES horses.

Thank you for reminding me that we were victims, I never really cared about the money she was making, or any of the other nonsense, just feeling horrible after finding out that so many paid for "rescued horses" were betrayed. I often wonder what happened to the group rescued horse that was there with a thousand burrs in his mane and forelock, the beautiful blm mustang mare, so many of them.

Every good-hearted person believes that other people feel the same, and, are trying as hard as they can to save as many horses as possible. I never dreamed that a rescue could do what was done to Maple, Aqua Bay, and the others.
