I had Deb buy her beet pulp and alfalfa pellets yesterday... so she should start with those.... and some alfalfa long stem, to see how she does with that.... right now, I just need the QT money sent over to Deb... she needs that to get the hay... and I sent her the paypal for feed, so the checks sent to Founder Rehab will be used towards that.... and for the farrier fees upcoming, as well as the vet which we will need soon..... then, hopefully transportation HOME!

Maybe it is time to wean the baby off momma. It takes alot of energy for the mare to make milk and she cannot afford expending the extra calories. She is so thin. He looks big enough to be on his own.

Poor Momma Horse .. She looks so sad, but I bet she's so happy to have some good food for a change. I do agree that the colt could be weaned...(but that's up to owners) he kind of looks like a yearling. It's going to take a lot of good food to bring her weight back and get her bones strong again.
I agree with everyone the timing is not right for weanning, now (modified)

I'm sure the comfort of nursing right now is probably doing them both good at this time, at least until they settle in at Deb's. The stress of weaning might be harder on her right now than the extra calories it takes. He does look a little too old for that! I can't wait to see the after pics!

Becky is right, way too stressful to wean at this time, Momma can be fed adequately and foal will be eating good food, she doesn't have that much milk anyway. They need the comfort of each others company while being quarantined after all they have been through, most of you would not wish to be be torn from your child in a new place, the depression and anxiety during this time if that was done could cause more illness and loss of appetite. First things first, there is plenty of time to wean after they have settled in and are well on the way to recovery.

Ditto what Heidi said above! She probably isn't producing that much milk. Like a kid sucking their thumb ;D just makes him and her happy.
Thank you all for saving these little cuties!

Agree from down here too... I think he looks like a yearling, but weaning is way to stressful yet. She is doubtfully making much milk, so she will get her calories... and he will be eating enough to sustain himself from hay... We will get them weaned... no hurry. Thank you for the pics Deb, they are in nasty shape, huh? looks like rainrot.... do they have lice too?
Mod to add... a name suggestion!! How do ya'll like Phoenix? for the baby...

Then you have to call her Fire! (or Phyre?) She doesn't look like it now, but I bet when she's fat and sassy, she's gonna surprise us all! I'll ruminate on other ideas, that's just the first thing that popped in my head this morning.

Awww.....sweet little guy, having his "nursies."
I'll bet with time and great feed this mare will wean him all by herself. He is definitely pushing a yearling ----look at that tail! This poor pair, they are in such rough shape. The mare's feet are awful! Can't wait to see what the farrier hacks off. She is going to feel SO much better when she gets some of that toe trimmed off.
Any guess as to what breed she is?
I am so happy that these two are gong to know a good life now. They sure deserve it!

When they are this thin it can really be hard to figure out what breed they are, since all you see are bones. I am thinking maybe Morgan, based more on the baby than on Mom's look.

I have a Peruvian Paso with DSLD. Low pasterns like this are often a sign of DSLD although my gelding doesn't have them. We don't ride Vivero, of course, but he has become my husband special pet and they are working on clicker training together. Who is training who is debatable! It's hard to tell what breed she may be but shame shame on whoever bred her and gave her a baby's weight to carry with these poor legs!

Jen found out it is still okay to vote 4/22 so go on over to www.stablechatter.com and support Founder Rehab ;DWestern Times magazine will allow you to vote for three horse groups or individuals. These groups will receive gifts from sponsors. Founder Rehab and TB Friends were two of the extraordinary groups featured in the magazine and are included in the choices. Go to www.stablechatter.com, click on "Extraordinary People" in the left column and vote for Beth and Peg who have offered a home and help for these horses!

Uploading pics now... OK, here they are... of the trim yesterday... first, the 'before' from a few days ago... and the 'after' here is Rejuv getting her hinds done... and Baby Phoenix, so far so good, both are sick, but not worse... eating, peeing and pooing. and both are very friendly and handleable... shame on the previous owners.

Hi Beth, I'm still on the hook for my pledge of $150, as I said initially I need to wait until this coming paycheck, so I can Paypal via your website next week if that's ok, but if you'd rather I send it direct to Deb, let me know. Thank you so much for taking on these 2, I just cried when I saw them, but cried harder when you opened your home and heart to them.

HI Grateful, it is absolutely fine to wait until next week! We will be fine right now until it is time to transport, with the exception of the hoof trimming... I think the vet bill will be due then too, for whatever she needs this week, then in a few weeks a coggins and health cert.... we'll have her teeth checked while she is there, and perhaps a gelding... So, I'm good right now in a holding pattern, I just wanted to keep the accounting up to date, didn't want to pressure you! Thanks!!! Thanks!!! I can't wait to see them... . I cried when I saw them too, which is why I had to help them.... let's pray for the ones on the lot tonight...
