They are doing great guys! They still have there colds but it doesn't look like strangles..Momma and baby are eating like crazy and loving all the attention they are getting..I just don't see how someone could abuse them like this...The farrier will be here again on Monday to work on Angels feet...

I 'think' we need to talk about transport down here! They have been 'out' for 2 weeks today, so unless they come up sick, they should break out of QT in another 2 weeks!!! I'll send some PMs today to see if our Rescue Railroad will work out, Blazin is going up to Corvallis again, so, let me see what I can do... and we'll need to arrange the vet to come and see them next week for a coggins and health cert!! :-) last I heard they were gaining weight and looking good!

I will know in a few days after I figure out how we are going to get them down here... right now we are ok, I still have a few pledges to 'call in'... Deb wrote and said they are better as far as the colds go, and are shedding off the nasty old long hair... but that is making them 'look' skinnier... darn!!! But, that 'is' the way it happens.. like a wet cat... (they are putting their new brushes to the test!) anyway, shedding is great, it means they are finally getting good nutrition, and now we are at 14 days, so we are hopefully past the potential for refeeding syndrome!!! Yipee!!! Deb needs to get more feed... they chow... :-) and the farrier comes Monday again... he will do baby Phoenix this time too! I sent up some halters and wormer to arrive today... that will help to worm them. and Deb will arrange for the vet to come next Friday to pull coggins, do preg check... and give vaccinations and floats if needed to momma Angel. whew!!!! thanks everyone!!!

Oh MY!!! I just remembered!!!! I need to geld the little booger!!! As he is a yearling... he CAN get momma preggers when he gets to feeling a little 'better'!!!! this way he'll have mom to nurse on too, as he recovers... so, I'd like to get that done up there.... not sure of the cost.... but bet it is cheaper up there... not to mention, it's the 'right thing to do'. Deb will get pics for us tomorrow!!! I can't WAIT!!!

With Angel's system so taxed.....if it were me, I would hold off on vaccinations until later.....
Preg check? Ugh! I didn't even consider that. If she is pg. and not far along, can she be aborted?
I am so excited to meet these two....

Those long ones are the roundworms, most commonly found in foals.

NOW that is an IMPRESSIVE roundworm!! That is one of the healthiest I have seen and I have seen ALOT!!
WOW!! Did you save that Worm?? Vets would pay money to keep it as a sample!
Make Sure you pick up their poop each time they do it (if you can) roundworm eggs can live in soil.

Always healthy for the worm but bad for the host, that is a parasite for ya.
With that size of that big mama a Panacur power pack may be in order. They are going to gain some serious weight once they get rid of those worms, they have been in there for ages.

Yep, that is what I thought too!!! that one is at LEAST a yearling too!!! I am 'planning' on my regular 'rescue from starvation' worming, as my vet recommended a few years ago... first worming with safeguard/panacur - doesn't have a huge kill rate, less colic, but gets some. second with Ivermectin, 3-4 weeks later... next with double dose STrongid, kill off tapes... others down to ok numbers by now... then, Ivermectin again, these are monthly wormings now... then, a power pak... KILLLLLLLLLLL.....
however... I have moved that powerpak 'up' to the second worming on occation, once with the PMU mares we had to do it twice!!! they were still FULL up with nasty tiny red worms right after an ivermectin!!! nasty.
so, I'm ready for 'em... I hate worms. yuk. and yep, between the ration plus, and deworming, I expect someone to mention the words "portly' to me when speaking of them this time next year....

Post by watermarkfarm on May 8, 2007 21:54:17 GMT -5
EEEEWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the same thing with my 3 PMU mares. I had to worm 'em slow, gentle, and often. They were pooping out the most disgusting piles of stuff. We did monthly wormings for a solid 6 months or so.
Gosh....no wonder poor momma is so thin. She is feeding one big baby and a lot of small worms!
