Jenn what is his favorite treat? or rather what will make him think of mom? Apples? Chopped Carrot? Apple treats? Jellybeans? If he is not stressed out, he loves carrots. I have never offered him jellybeans, so I don't know about that! He does like soft peppermints and granola bars. He also likes to be scratched right behind his ears, and will melt in your hands if you scratch him just right! I'm sure he hasn't had a treat since he's been there, so I bet anything you offer will be appreciated. I think if you could just talk to him that will help too since he probably hasn't had anyone whispering sweet nothings in his ear lately! I feel so much better knowing you will go see him. No doubt Jerry will give you a hard time!

Jen, I have to tell you that Sir Prize has fans far and wide. My own sisters, who SHOULD be asking about my horses (hehe) instead routinely ask me "How is the surpise baby mule doing?" whenever I talk to them! I think he'll make a good children's book subject ... hint hint!

Barb and I went to visit Sir Prize. I picked up Barb and we headed off following the directions to Jerry Tindalls, only to discover...
he lives 1 1/2 BLOCKS FROM BARB ON THE SAME STREET! LOL
He told me to drive to the end of the road, and when we got there we realized it ended at Barbs road!
Barb said "Hey why didn't you tell me it was the guy with all the mules!"
Anyway.. Sur Prize had already worked in the round pen, had a bath and was tied to a hitching post.
We recognized him without having to be told it was him. (he has his mothers good looks of course)
We petted and scratched, fed some carrots, and petted and scratched some more.
We called Mom and let her talk to him. He perked up his ears when he heard her voice and started looking around for her! ;D
His nose is still a little swollen and stitches can be ugly looking things... but its all healthy, no sign of infection and high enough he can keep it dry if he wants to.
We got to see his stall and meet a few of his new friends. Everyone was very friendly and kind, and he seemed relaxed but happy to have someone to baby him a little bit. If I stopped scratching hew would step closer looking for more.
We will happily visit him more! In fact with him so close to Barb it will be hard to resist going by daily (he's only about 5 miles from me which in the desert is nothing)
I have some video I'll string together and upload.

Barb and Tock, THANK YOU SO MUCH for visiting our lil guy today. Having you two there meant so much and I feel better knowing you guys saw him and loved on him. I'm sure he needed the attention and know I needed the comforting! I love the pictures, he looks relaxed in your company. Barb, I love the fact that you had to wait til you shoulder was better so you could drive and it turns out he is 1/2 a mile away from you. I am so glad you took the time to visit him and I look forward to more updates. HUGS to you both! ~Jen

AAAAWWWWWW !! Theres that sweet face. How much longer will he be gone. I hope it zooms by for both of you It really depends on how well he does this month. What I have learned is that for anyone other than me, he has shown to be difficult to catch. I never thought that would be a problem since he always came running up to me, but now that I think about it, he has had a lot of visitors, but not many handlers. When turned out at Jerry's for the first week he ran away and did not want to get haltered which I thought was totally out of character. He is also having meltdowns every few days and still throwing tantrums from time to time. This is not good behavior for a youngster who is starting to grow big and strong. The plan was to have him at Jerry's for at least 30 days with a possible extension to 45 or 60 depending on how well he does. I have had Michelle (mkgbuegal) let him know that the sooner he shows improvement the sooner he can come home, so maybe that will help. The timing for this is good since I have taken on a new sales position for a small software start up and barely have enough time for Jamaica who doesn't even have a year under saddle herself. Yes, I do want it to zoom by, but I also realize the best thing for both of us is to give him a solid foundation upon which we can build. I'd like to show him this summer in-hand and this is the best start I think he can get. Thank you everyone again for helping me make this adjustment and for supporting both of us through this difficult yet necessary transition!

Well...had another chat with Jerry tonight. He is leaving for Norcal on Wednesday and we had to make a decision about whether or not SP would be making a well deserved trip home or if he needed some more time in charm school. We decided the best thing would be for him to spend some more time with Jerry. Jerry said that by the time SP is about 12 he should have all this stuff down! Actually, he has shown a lot of improvement and Jerry is enjoying working with him. However, I think that it's best for both of us if he spends a bit more time in a disciplined atmosphere. I think I am being extra cautious because he is a mule and I just don't want to mess anything up. The good part is Jerry has other mules SP's age so he gets playtime with his own kind, which I think is great. So, I need to call on Auntie Barb and Auntie Tock. More visits are in order...

Jen, you're really making a great investment in SP and I encourage you to stick with his time at Jerry's. Being a mule owner, I am all too familiar with how "rank" mules can get and how easily one can be ruined. Hang in there with this. You have an opportunity to create a really great mule if you do things right ---- Jerry is one of very few trainers who understand mules. I would NEVER trust our mule with a non-mule person. Our mule, Odie, is wonderful but definitely comes with some "quirks" that can be at the least annoying and at the most dangerous. Our vet, a mule guy, gave me a list of things to watch out for when I was considering buying Odie. He called them "biggies" with mules ---- things that most often were the worst problems that mules seem to develop. They were: 1-- easy to catch 2-- Feet easy to handle/trim/shoe 3---Easy to lead 4-- Kicks Our guy Odie is wonderful 98% of the time. BUT the quirk that we live with is that he can pull away or bolt while you are leading him. There is nothing you can do to stop him. He does it whenever it does not make sense to him that you are taking him somewhere (like away from feed, or away from buddies). We manage it by tucking a few cookies in a pocket and using "mule logic" and tons of Parelli and Lyons groundwork to keep his "heeling" skills sharp and to convince him otherwise. But it's a REAL DRAG, this habit. Like I said, we live with it. Wish we didn't have to, but from what I hear, mules often develop ONE bad habit. You are giving SP a good start and hopefully you won't deal with any of that. Odie is easy to catch and very easy to trim and shoe. The other quirk is that he is ***deathly*** fearful of tractors, especially diesel tractors. Probably for a good reason. So anyway....here I have this pretty amazing 18 year old mule, but I wish I could go back and un-do these very ingrained fears and habits he has. Mules are amazing because they learn so fast and remember what you teach them ----- and they are horrifying for the same reason!! Katie Odie and Demi (13) at a dressage show a few weeks ago. Warmup was great, but Odie bolted in the dressage arena as he was afraid of a tractor working nearby...

Mammoth spotted jack on the dad's side (that's a giant spotted donkey) and we were told TB on the dam's side. He is off the track, so that would make sense...
