My (sob!) baby boy is on his way to Southern California with Jerry Tindell for 30 days of boarding school! He was supposed to go to Jerry's ranch in Wilton in May, but since Jerry was working with him today and had room in his rig, he decided to bring SP down now. I think I am still in shock and miss my boy! He loaded like a pro and is sandwiched between a morgan and another mule. I would guess they are probably halfway there right about now. Can anyone in Socal visit him? Jerry is taking him to the Hesperia clinic later this month, and he said visitors are welcome to his ranch, which I think is in either Hesperia or Ramona I'll have to find out. We had a private clinic this morning with Jerry that went really well, and then Jerry worked with Caly and her girls in the afternoon. I already miss my boy, but I know he is in great hands and I can't think of anyone else I would rather see handling him than Jerry and his staff. Please can someone go visit him?!

What kind of stuff are they going to be teaching him? Sounds like it will be a good experience for him. Although I am sure you will miss him lots. But a month isn't too long...

Jerry will be handling him six days a week and will travel with him as well. He will learn to get used to new situations, and will be trailering quite a bit. He has been testing me lately and I'm about to start a new job, which means limited time to work with him. He is still young and while he isn't difficult, he is starting to test his boundries. Seeing as he is my first youngster, I don't want to mess anything up as he deserves to have the best start in life as possible. He is in for a big shock as he has had the luxury of being in a pasture with horses who look out for him and baby him. It's time for him to be independent. He's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I know my limitations. As tough as it was to see him leave, I know it is for the best. I have been with him since the day he was born and I get sad because I feel like I abandoned him! PLEASE keep reminding me this is good for him!

It so good for them when they young ....to have been there done that. The extra training will pay off when he's undersaddle. My Ollie when he was a yearling I did in-hand trail with him that year. Now, a few years later, he's being ridden he handles new experience so well, his first dressage show he scored well into the high 60's and a train was going by all the time while I was riding my TL-4 test. I was so pleased with Ollie...
It will be harder on you than him, but well worth the effort in the long run. You will see the results for years to come.. Good luck..

That is a good investment you are making, Jen --- having a mule baby get a solid start. They can be "different" creatures, and not always in a good way. You have to start them right.
Sir Prize will have Uncle King to watch over him. King is a Belgian in training with Jerry right now, and he used to reside at my farm.

Auntie Caly is feeling the pain too! I "met" Sir Prize maybe 10 minutes after Jen! Tiny little guy with the long legs and the VERY protective mama, Jamaica! He's a big boy now, but it was so hard to see him load up and drive away. My girls have been living in the pasture with him for the past 5-6 weeks. He knows my car (so do they, but) he's the only one who comes trotting over when I arrive! He was so used to all my attention, that I think he's *still* perplexed that I'm paying attention to those "other" horses (Kaleigh and Angel). When they first arrived he was the one who kept wanting to go over and say "hi" although his Aunt Tina wouldn't let him. And, although Kaleigh was a bit freaked out by him at first, they've become hang-out-and-graze-together buddies. I think she'll miss him too.

Jerry had 4 horses and a mule with him that are currently training. There was a big Belgian there, but I don't know what his name is. That must have been him. Someone I board with wanted to take him! I like the fact that Jerry takes animals in training with him on the road.

You are cracking me up, Jen! Your little boy is off learning to be a man now...
I'll be the same way in a few months, as my son is a Senior and then off to college with him...(Although he swears he's gonna be that creepy 40 year old guy living in his mother's basement!)

Jenn... I'm pretty sure Jerry is right here in Hesperia, unless he moved. I'd love to go by and visit.. should I just call Jerry and ask to visit him, or go see him at the clinic?

That was probably King in the trailer. He travels with Jerry, which is amazing if you know King and his history. Those of you are the RO potluck last year saw King in my pasture. He came from Canada and arrived at my place basically WILD. His owner sent him to Jerry out of desperation after a John Lyons trainer (Raye Lochert by the way; stay away from him) f@#cked him up badly (ran a stud chain thru his tongue!!).
Now King is no longer wild. He is ground driving and leads everywhere. He travels with Jerry but has to sleep in the trailer because Jerry is afraid King will damage someone's barn!!
Uncle King is very kind and playful, and he LOVES mules, so he will say nice things to SP.
