Hey Beth,
My farrier told me recently that she is considering adopting a third pony. She has our older POA at her house and loves the two ponies and takes great care of them. She might be up for the challenge of a rehabbed pony like this...she's a great home....might be worth me planting the seed in her head about this little guy so that if/when he is able to move on he might have a home lined up.
Email me some of those pictures you took of the Sawzall event and I will talk to her. It's worth a shot.

Thanks guys, great lead Katie, we will check with NorCal Equine to see what they are thinking on homing him... we have him lined up for xrays Monday afternoon, and this afternoon our old trimmer called and said.. "I know the EXACT deformity... I do a mini with that"... gee, is that what we wanted to hear! so, she is just by the way in Clayton on Tuesday, so is coming here at 4 pm... so, at least we will get a good assessment on all fronts.
He is brighter every day... eating very well... just hay so far... but lots of the hay...
I've been picking up his feet... he is learning that pretty well, so long as we are slow, and he is haltered... or he bites and runs off.... but once they are up I'm doing a little rasping.. well, some on my fingers, some on his... hehe.. I'm no farrier.
More pics tomorrow... and as the weather is so nice, I will try to let him out in the barn yard for a while... if he wants to...

We are calling the little man Blaze now... getting the energy off of his 'feet'... and letting him have a new lease on life... with a new name. So... Blaze went out for a bath this afternoon! he is soooo dirty, with deep dandruff, and so many matts and his tummy was covered in urine... not sure why... but it was... then he got bubbled up (microtek) and after rinsing, I brushed him all out, pulled out many many matts, and found horrible urine burns with blisters on his stifles... . and even after a good scrub there was still deep dandruff and nasty foxtails and hay seeds coming out of his furr.. but you can see I got his tail combed finally YEAH! and washed too :-) I also got a few shots of his feet... they are still very bizarre to see... this one is from just about at his front feet, so essentially right in front of them... looking straight 'on'... and he met Sundance... and Phoenix... his nose is even looking better... not sure what was wrong, but it was swollen and hard and not 'open' on the left when he came... now its better... He is eating like there is no tomorrow... mix hay (orchard/alfalfa) and we added the alfalfa pellets right on top tonight... .still eats around them. we gave him a single handful of rolled oats tonight too... put out an iodized salt block and minerals in a pan... and gave probiotics... all in all I 'think' he is looking better... certainly brighter... and we'll know more about prognosis in a day. we've gotten over halfway to our fundraising goal with him! he is set to get xrays tomorrow, then our old trimmer is coming to do him on Tuesday afternoon... if nothing else, his fronts will feel SOOOO much better... and I'll let ya'll know what the vet thinks...

LOL! That first picture he looks like "WHAT THE HECK are you going to do to me!?!" and the last is like "AAAAAH! MUCH better!" Beth and Peg! Again, you guys are amazing!
Oh, and it looks to me like Sundance needs a few lbs! Good grief! What do you do? Starve him!?

The urine burns may have been from laying down TONS because of his feet- I saw a donkey that had feet similar - but came straight out and curled over - that would lay down almost ALL the time - to the point he would pea while he was laying down to avoid the pain of getting up - so maybe that is what happened... Have you seen him drop and pea normally at your place??? Ohhh and can Sundance come stay at MY house With all my black horses I could use a Fabio like hunk here lol!! Sara

Wow, he is so SMALL!
Beth, would it help to clip him and get some of that hair off? If so, Demi and I will come down and clip him for you.
He looks brighter. Poor little thing. I mentioned him to Mare, my shoer, and her eyes brightened....good sign. Am hoping he can be saved. I know you and Peg will do what is right for him....
Let me see if I can come up with some Pony Club charity funds to help this guy....I will talk to our DC today.

you know, I almost wonder if the matts on his tummy kept his penis from dropping... we literally couldn't see his sheath before... but now we can see it! so, we will keep an eye on whether he can drop or not... he is up to poo now, so I'm hoping he stands to pee.... he does lay down a lot, but not ALL the time...
Thanks for passing the word Katie! and the offer of a clip... I have to see what he is like completely dry today... as of last night at bedtime check he was still slightly damp... but the hair was much much slicker, and his tummy looked WAY better... I hate to stress him by clipping if we don't have to.... he will shed out ok if we give him time... and nutrition. :-)
yeah... enough food is kinda hard to come by here at our place... hehe... Sundance has to FIGHT to get enough, as you see!!! hehe... we fight to keep him slim!! he's doing so well... and he is 3 this spring.. so it 's time to meet MR Saddle!!! LOL!

I can't wait to see after pics of his feet once your trimmer gets ahold of him. I've been itching to get my own hands on them...<G> The LH will be trickier, but the RH should straighten out. Can't wait to see the X rays if you can share them? Kudos to you PnP-he looks MUCH brighter already.

He looks much better. His whole demeanor seems to have changed. His tail is nice and fluffy!

This is one amazing story! His tail is gorgeous. . .as is his mane and forlock! Can't wait to see the rest of him grow into those!
You know, those handicapped animals don't know they are handicapped. They just compensate and keep on keeping on. Only their bodies are not perfect. Even if he only gets 3 good hooves, they will carry him in a protected environment. Hoping for a good report from the x-rays and the farriers.
I am amazed at how different the little guy looks in such a short period of time. He's in a different world now! He no longer has to eat what the other horses have left behind and try his best to keep out of their way.
Thanks also, for everyone who is posting on this thread. I am learning sooooo much.

He may not have much body, but he has LOTS of mane and tail! He did seem brighter yesterday. Poor thing has no idea about leading. I was leading and encouraging from the front, Beth was literally picking up hind end and pushing forward. A couple of times he actually "got it" and moved forward.... except when transitioning from dirt to that scary, scary concrete floor in the barn

S'OK mickey, he'll be here a while... :-) Vet just called, he's had 3 emergency calls, so can't come until tomorrow... dang it. but, farrier is coming tomorrow at 5 pm... at least we'll get started on what we can do without xrays... and if he 'can', he'll get them before that and email me.

Farrier came today... the one who said she'd seen and still works on one like this... well... then she saw Blaze... and her jaw dropped... all she could say was 'wow' and I let her sit and muster on it while I got the camera... when I returned she was still there saying... 'wow'. then she got to work... and then I said 'wow'. still waiting for the vet for xrays, but I feel a ton better and so does Blaze today. at least the weight is off and we are down to what looks like it might be a hoof... not a horn after my pics download, I'll edit here and add them... I think he's gained weight already too... and he is up to eating 3 flakes of hay per day... !!! that is about 15 to 18 lb of hay! amazing... and he's pooing that much too!!! filling his stall every day! I'm still giving probios, a half horse sized dose per day... is that good? he is not licking any salt, nor eating any of the loose minerals yet... nor any pellets or oats...

They look like feet!!! Up his probios - he should be getting a dose for a 1200 pound horse per day at LEAST - repopulate his gut with bacteria as quickly as possible As far as minerals - Get him a purina 12:12 BLOCK - normally - NOt my fav - but, they have a LITTLE molasses in them adn are a tiny bit softer than regular blocks - with the PMU babies they would go for these when they wouldn't for the minerals or salt - won't hurt yoru other horses. They are not the greatest, but it will get him started on other things. Keep in mind he might be kind of sore for a few days after getting his feet done - Might want to give a 1/2 gram of bute for a day or two - just a little to keep him fully comfortable. that way, he won't be ouchy and risk going off of his hay or possibly colicing - with these poor kids sometimes it si the little stuff as you already know!! I made up his "goodies" this evening - because of the yeast product it has to sit uncovered for 24 hours, then it will be packed and shipped. Will have dosing instructions with it I added some minerals to it as well since he hasn't been picking the minerals yet. Also - try soaking some alfalfa cubes till they are loose and fluffy - just a few - see if he shows interest in those at all. just 3-5 cubes at a shot if he will eat those, will be easier to get him to eat the supplements I am sending since they will stick to the cubes Sara

Wow. He's looking sooooo much better! He's even standing more balanced and normal-like. I'm impressed that he stood there for all that kind of work. Obviously he hasn't had that experience before in his life. He wasn't halter broke. He doesn't lead. He most likely wasn't handled before. One other word comes to mind. . .amazing!

I went down to say "Hi" to him this morning, and he actually walked over to see me. I think he believes we are nice! Imagine, after all he's been through.
But he still has a long, long way to go and we still have to see what the Xrays show.

What did your Farrier say about ongoing care of the back hoof? Will it start to grow out straight?? Thank you for all that you are doing for him.

Beth and Peg, my jaw dropped when I saw the hoof trim photos. Amazing!
You might give him some Arnica to help with the soreness....It won't hurt him either way.
Mkgbuegel might have some ideas about homepathic stuff that will help. She set me up with some on Sunday when my horse Ridge had a terrible hoof bruise and was 4/5 lame. Ridge was trotting sound 24 hours later!

He was really funny on the trims... when we started picking up his feet on day 2, well... leave it at he was having no part of it. by day 3, with someone holding the halter (so he didn't bite me!) he did ok for a picking, by day 4, let me rasp one or two strokes... so, by the time the farrier came, he was 'way better'... on the fronts he wants to bite you the whole time... so, we had to keep his nose in check all the time... but on the rears, he was not biting... he did however try to kick her with the right hind while she was doing the left!!! LOL!! more of a nudge, but it was funny... him trying to assert himself...
the whole thing took a couple of hours... and he was pretty darn good! We gave him breaks for a walk... which started as her helper leading, and me pushing... from behind... and ended with him actually leading!!! Yipee!!! he is a very smart pony, and VERY willing.... that is certainly helping him out :-)
The farrier thinks we can get the right one to straighten out... not sure on the left... but she had an interesting thought... that if the bones are all there and ok, a hoof wall resection might correct the deformity! from a barefoot trimmer... but hey... the thing is, I don't know how we will get him ON the sole... even partly... but, we're willing to see what xrays show, and as you see my farrier has not only balls but a heart of gold...
