I'm glad he's with you. If he has any chance at all - it's with you. And if he has no chance, then you will know it and will make the right decision.
Poor little guy.

My daughter already brushed his little body and his mane out... she found his hair on his tummy so matted she had trouble telling if it is a boy or girl... his sheath is matted to his belly, but he kicked so she wasn't able to get those off. poor thing. he had no idea what to do with pellets, but hay he knew... just grass for this boy. and I guess we'll have the vet here to do xrays, like asap. and farrier hope for tomorrow for at least some cutting with a saw tomorrow... assuming the bones are intact in those feet... I don't know guys... it's not good. but we will at minimum feed him, get him bathed and clean, before we hold him and let him go.

I will have to find the pictures of Wonder Why, a filly weaned young and abandoned at a board stable. She was not supplemented, wormed, or trimmed. After 6 months the BO gave her to me. Not only did we save her, she grew into a nice super sweet young lady, and became the first horse of a young lady who had dreamed of owning a horse for years.
She had swollen joints, a bad topline from bad feet (it looked a lot like twinkle toes.) She was shaggy with wormy hair and though skinny enough to see hip bones had a belly that was HUGE and hung past to her knees.
Beth its a huge project! But it can be done GOD willing. I cried when I saw Wonder at 6 all grown up and looking completely normal. She had been moved to the stables I got her at and the BO who gave her to me had not recognized her. He didn't want to believe me when I showed up to visit her and told him who she was. I had to tell him the owners name and that she was the one I gave the horse to as a 2 y/o. He was calling over his workers to tell them it was the same filly!
I'll be praying for a miracle.

Poor poor baby! My heart broke when I first saw his picture. Thank you Beth and Co for giving him some dignity and all you have. At the very least he will know love before he goes.

Thanks Tock, this one needs a little miracle... and until then, love love and more love. and lots of food. if those feet can be saved, the pony will be savable... we'll take all the jingles ya'll can do for us... the weird thing on those feet is that they curl sideways, so he is walking on the sides of those hoof walls... not the heels... and they wobble when he pics up the leg... and unfortunately, there is no belly to be wormy... he is a rack of bones... nothing else. I had to push him to move him, my daughter leading.. he's not halter broke, but too weak to fight pushing... he has stringlike hamstring muscles, all you see there is all hair. and all rain rot... and mats. I'm sure he doesn't even weigh 200 lb.

Wow Beth, this one's a challenge! I wish you luck on the x-rays.. One came into the feed lot with those same feet. We all helped the vet, as she directed one of the guys to take them off with a saz-all. But the mare did pull out of it, faster than anyone expected, she actually was not standing as upright as your Toes horse. So if the bones are intact maybe you've got a shot Do you know where he came from or how long it took to get his feet in this condition? Our vet school sometimes donates work on these extreme cases - so the student's get some experience with them- anyone close enough that could help you out? Good luck today and thank-you

Hi C, We are pretty close to UCDavis, but we much prefer the care at Loomis Basin Equine, however I don't know yet if I feel like he should/could make the 2 hour trailer ride up, then back again this week... grrr, such hard decisions! The good news is that he ate, drank , peed and poo'd last night, and is bright as can be expected this am... thank God, I was dreading what to do if he coliced from his 6-7 hr trailer ride...
The rescue who found him thought he was 5-6 years old, but his teeth say baby... and his body looks baby, so I dunno. I'll get a better look at teeth today, but I'm thinking yearling. that might bode worse for him, as he would have never developed decent bones... if he dislocated the fetlocks shortly after birth, he may have never developed the joint. they certainly have VERY improper direction of flexion, and he has no control over the movement of those fetlocks, they are just flaccid. They flop. naturally he's not halter broke either, but too weak to fight too much... he did kick at my daughter when she tried to get matts off his tummy, but that's it.
I may just give him banamine and load him up, we are waiting to hear what the vet thinks we should do...

Could you post an update on the ABR board too? I never made the connection between your two board names until I saw your post here this morning.

Wow. He's a special-needs case alright. The will to survive has always amazed me. This little one was obviously in a herd and had to keep moving. I also don't understand how an owner would allow it to progress to this point. So sad.
Best wishes to you all. I am glued to this thread as I always learn so much from your horse experiences. He looks pretty happy and upbeat looking around the corner there. . and. . .pretty good after being brushed out.

just for 'orientation' the foot picture is his left hind, and it is from directly in front of the foot/leg... and a tiny downward angle to see the 'fetlock/pastern' best...

What I do know about the former owner is rather sad actually... an older gentleman with rather advanced Parkinsons, losing his ranch in foreclosure, just couldn't care for them any more. Thank goodness NorCal Equine Rescue heard of these 17 ponies and kept them from the auction.

Hi Back at you Beth:
With the breadth and width of cruelty that we see done to animals and children you'd think we've seen it all and then there's something like 'Toes'... and I still ask myself how/why - how could anyone leave an animal like that...evil just is bottomless isn't it? I looked at him and felt sick - John ran out and cleaned his horse' s feet. There aren't enough communial thanks to convey to you, for taking care of this poor creature. I feel very confident that what ever you decide it will be absolutely the best for him. CW

Oh wow. This guy is in such bad shape. Beth, please post the digital xrays when you get them --- I'd love to see what's in there...
Is that a club foot, the one all curled backward?
Just based on the long mane and tail, I'd have to say this horse is older than a yearling? So sad. I know you and Peg will make the right call on this one.

hmmm, I do not think this foot is clubbed... but, I don't know WHAT you'd call it. I think it is just congenitally deformed... the left foot grows in a curl directly to the outside... and comes back around to hit the leg. there is a large sore where it hits, and it is banged with every step as when he lifts the leg, the hoof 'thing' flops downwards... and as he slaps the foot back down, it bangs on the leg again... the right is more solid, it doesn't seem to 'flop'... and it grows in a 'relatively' more forward direction... I guess. I wonder if he had 'downed pasterns' at birth that were never helped and they flopped sideways soon thereafter? his hairline on the left hind is at the ground. his weight bearing surface is the side wall.... and it grows directly sideways. hard to describe. I hope to get video tonight... and we await the info from Loomis who wanted pics to give us info on what to 'do' and when

And......I'll see if someone can take care of Reno for me tomorrow or Friday so I can come out and help with the horses and especially this little guy...if not then, this weekend for sure.
