I had wondered if taking off the wall underneath and some creative work if he might be really lopsided but maybe end up with the sole touching the ground. Glad the farrier thinks it may be an option. I don't know whether to look forward to the Xrays or not. I guess if he is going to at least be pain free we can look for his purpose in life. Maybe as an www.eagala.org/ horse?

Yeah, Tock, I am kind of the same... I almost dread the xrays... they might show us really BAD news... but, never know! once we see them, we'll go back for another trim sesson, and try to get something resembling sole on the floor, and go from there.... until then... we feed and feed and feed.... and pick poo... he's eating like a full sized horse! (and some of them only eat 2-3 flakes a day!) he will go up to 4 flakes in the next day or so, until he is maxed out/free feeding! amazing little tummy volume! we'll up the probios tonight's dose...
have you used Forco Sara? I use it for my stallion now (the 30-something one) and he is finally gaining some weight! of course it's a powder...
we'll try alfalfa cubes this week too... so far no go on any pellet... and, after the danger of day 10 passes, I might try the dreaded omeline... I just want him to TRY something!!! a handful... then I can move it to pelleted hay... stinker...

Dazz wouldn't eat any pellets. We had to soak it all (in 3 parts water to 1 part pellets) and mix it up into a fluffy mess for him. A mix of beet pulp and hay pellets, to which we would stir in high calorie senior feed (no water added to that one). Don't forget ground flax seed for extra calories.

Hey Sarah -
If the mineral block is still a no-go for this little guy.....what about having them give some electrolytes??
He is such a little doll....Tiny Tim should have been his name when they listed him!!!! I like Blaze though - fits his personality, determined to beat the odds!!!!
Beth or Peg - can you please p.m. me your #'s again? It may be more of a last minute thing when I come out but I won't do so without calling first. I don't have much Reno time this week because of baseball and the school auction and Greek Easter this weekend. (well, we're celebrating a week early so the whole fam can be there) so it might be next week.
Give him a big kiss from me!!!

I have been looking at the photos. I am wondering if there is a way to create a "normal" artificial hoof that would fit his rear feet like boots. It would make him taller in the rump, but how much worse would that be? It would get his leg muscle and gait headed in the right direction while working on retrimming the hooves. Am I nuts? How would you go about making something like that? Fibergass?

The elctrolytes won't hurt - doing the paste kind - they will make him thirsty I would like to see this little on start to get good doses of comprehensive vitamin/minerals - that is funny about him wanting to bite a little - lol...biting is not funny - but that this little guy is trying is cute. that is funny about him wanting to bite a little - lol...biting is not funny - but that this little guy is trying is cute. Sara Cadence was a biter when she arrived.. It was from fear. She hadn't received any real foot care for awhile, but she would take it for a bit, just freeze up and then to release she would nip. HARD!!! Angi had some nice bruises from early toe trims getting her ready to be done by a real farrier!

I think I'd be a bit nervous if someone was chopping off my only 'good' feet... We tried to gently let him know it was not acceptable, while not creating a fight... it is good to see him give some 'fight'... and be concerned with protecting himself.
How about making the mineral powder into a paste? or putting some in applesauce to syringe in?
I'll PM ya my number Stacie...

Fibergass? You aren't nuts... we've been talking about that too. Something similar to what Sundance had, epoxy toe extension, but whole foot. Keep those ideas coming... just need those darned Xrays!

Wow, that little guy is the luckiest pony out there. I'm glad your barefoot trimmer has such patience, and love for these guys. And you 2 as well.

Hey Beth & Peg,
My farrier was out this morning and we talked about the pony. She's interested in seeing the xrays. She said she would show the photos and rads to her farrier/vet group (the cream of the cream of the crop around here) and see if anyone had any experience with this type of rehab and could offer any suggestions.
She trims a mini with the same condition, and it walks on the side of its rear hooves. She cautions you to "be realistic about long term quality of life." She felt that the smaller animals (the mini is 200 lbs) could handle walking on the side of their foot better, but if the pony is destined to be 500+ lbs, it might be much harder for him.

The little man is doing so well! he is getting fatter (ahem, ok, so that is relative!) by the day... and friskier! He nips now... (isn't THAT cute? NOT) when you do something he doesn't like... but not agressive really, so we reprimand him and are teaching him that his people herd-mates don't LIKE nips... ;-)
He is awaiting the xrays... my vet had at least 3 emergency calls a day last week, so we were at the bottom of the 'make up' list... I guess if I had a horse colicing I'd feel that it was more important than xrays on pony feet that have been this way a loooong time... but, we're hopeful that he gets here today or tomorrow anyway.
Then, we start trying to roll those feet over! that should be fun.
He is also making good friends with his buddy in the next stall.. Bob. You see him in the first pics. :-) The mouse and the elephant. :-) The guy in the stall on the other side has tall wall, but he gets his info by licking under the divider!!! LOL!!! he is cushing's with baaad IR (actually diabetic) and he is licking to find scraps of hay!!! he isn't allowed hay... so, it's a real treat if a blade fluffs his way... sigh.
I'll get more pics this week of the xrays, and of his 'fat little tooshie' :-) and I need to get some of him grooming with the 2000 lb beast of a friend he has... !!! Shel, you'll break the pony's heart if you take him... but... that's OK!!!

Just saw the photos and wanted to cry at first. This baby is my kind of horse -- what he may lack in "perfection", he makes up for in spirit and soul.
What a cutie-patootie.
I feel rage toward the person/people who did this to him.
He's in my prayers and will remain in my prayers. If a miracle is to be, he'll get one and then some, and if not, he found heaven on earth, first. Either way, he's finally safe.

OK, So, I'm bad at downloading pics this week, sorry... but I'm sitting here right now, tapping my fingers.... waiting for my daughter to call and say the pony had his xrays... tap tap... tappppp tap tap... no call from the vet... so I guess that's good... tap tap tap...
if they don't get done today, he'll go with us to Loomis Basin Equine on Saturday am for xrays... I hate to make him stay balanced for 2 hours up then again home if I dont' have to tho, so hoping the vet makes it now... tap tap tap.............
he is doing well metabolically tho, eating drinking and pooing, and gaining weight nicely... has some tushy now... he is enjoying some brushing (well sometimes) but showing some 'tude when I get ahold of a mat... he still gets those in his flanks since he lays down a lot and his hair is longish and fluffy but dry... but good news is that he's shedding and now the shorter hair is shiney! yeah! I'll let ya'll know when the xrays are confirmed as done!

ARGH!!! Vet had anOTHER emergency!!! I got home at 8 and got a message that he'd be here at 9 am... sigh... I'm sorta getting peeved... but try to stay focused on that if "I" had a horse colicing, I'd rather he dropped xrays on a pony who'd been this way for years than my dieing horse... concentrate... and again.. tap tap tap... grrrrrr... I'm almost feeling like taking the morning off work so I can be here! I'm really anxious about how they'll look! but he has to take them home to develop them anyway, so I won't know anything until evening anyway... dang it...
I'm sorry everyone, I don't want to keep getting everyone's hopes up!!!

You need more vets out your way! When Diva needed x-rays, I had 3 vets from 2 different clinics leaning over each other's shoulders fiddling with the digital x-ray machine. Instant photos.
Next time I b*tch about how much it costs to board here...I'll remember there are some benefits.
I hope he's able to make it in the morning!

Beth, I'm beginning to suspect that the Case of the Disappearing Vet is really just a ploy to keep us all on tenterhooks! The suspense is killing me ... I check this thread several times a day to find out about your boy's "report card" ... waiting, waiting, waiting. Dang medical personnel and their "emergencies" ... yeah, right ... he's probably off golfing with your family physician!
